Injuries & Other Ills: 2014-15

The skating season is upon us, and with that comes, alas, news about injuries and other issues. Since my previous thread on the subject has been archived:

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?38900-Injuries-amp-Other-Ills

I decided to start a new one, to help to keep track of what is going on with the skaters. The information is scattered over several specific threads - but also all over fan threads and competition threads. And I think it is safe to say that many of us do not follow every single thread, and thus may miss out on current information. So I think it would be a good idea to have it collected in one place - therefore I will try to "collect" relevant threads here; but note that I am not the most organised creature on the planet (gross understatement!), so I cannot promise how consistent I will be in this.

But also this is a place to share/ask for updates on skaters and their condition.

However, this is not "merely" a News thread - meaning that extracts from articles/interviews about older injuries, recovery &c are also relevant here. And also general articles about injuries, but also, more cheerfully, recovery, rehabilitation, or what is done to prevent injuries from occuring.

Please feel free to use this thread for anything relevant to the topic - and information that you have to share will be very gratefully received indeed!

And note in closing that, despite the perhaps dismal seeming subject, this is thread to celebrate the skaters. They don't "only" go out on the ice and look pretty - a lot of hard work, dedication, and toughness and grit are required to fight through, and this is a thread to acknowledge and honour the skaters.

Joshua Farris is recovering from two ankle sprains in six weeks (agh!). He only started doing triple Axels again last week.

I'm so sad that B/S and V/T can't compete in GPS :(
And now this....
I guess it's time to give up Billeman spin.
I also have the same thoughts. :scowl: no need for too much pain just because of that spin.

It's not said that his back pain are caused by the bielman, ina bauer or doughnut spin... it could also be because of a fall or a muscle strain (actually reading through the various article translated it seems that's actually it and not a chronic injury at the spine)... anyway I think it's up to him and his team decide what is best for his body

The injury could come from a jump or a fall. No need to made conclussions and decissions with no information.
The thing is, jumping is a must in single dicipline, but biellmann is not. I'd rather advoid strain on my back as much as possible if I were him. So I know I have to jump, the pain in the back is unavoidable, but the strain will be more if I do both jumps and Biellmann spin, don't you think?

Not really, since I´m not a doctor, a coach or a figure skater I will leave that decision to them.

Very rough translation (corrections welcome):
On their road to success, professional athletes face difficulties, failures, injuries .... Never mind, they repair and return to their favorite thing. I'd rather be on the ice already!!!

Good to see your thread (2.0 ;)) again, LRK :) (although I of course wish that all skaters were immune from injuries and other ills).

I agree, golden! - Thanks to you and everyone for sharing info, though it's sad that there is info to share... and I hope for all skaters who are injured that they have full and speedy recoveries.

I'm not surprised Hanyu is having lower back issues. His body is so slight and the pressure on various parts involved in landing those quads and triple axels is so great....there's only so much he has to cushion it all. I think as the quad in singles, some of the triples for women, the throw quads in pairs, etc. become more prevalent we're going to see more and more and more back, ankle and knee issues in the years to come. Where is it all going to end? Will some jumps and or "tricks" be outlawed because of the physical impact to the skater?

Maybe ISU should issue some rule for limited jumps in short and long programs? Like only 1 quad in SP and 2 quads in LP for men?

Not exactly the happiest thread to have a list of casualties, but handy as a resource. Thanks to LRK for starting this.

We can also use this thread to send our favorite injured skaters some get well wishes?

That will hurt the chances on skaters that can do difficult and demanding layouts, it wouldn´t be fair

I think it's also a great go-to thread for a good discussion on injuries/affect of tougher layouts/prevention/cures. Thanks LRK for starting this!

I hope we're getting all the injuries out of the way early in the season.
