We still have a long way to go until the official start of the new season, so I thought a fun way to pass the time would be to share some classic fluff videos.

I didn't watch skating in the '90s, and I know little about ice dance...so this one was very educational for me. Drama city!

The Usova Grishuk Zhulin Platov Saga

There are dozens of great Plushenko & Yagudin fluff pieces I've found, but I'll start with this classic one about their rivalry. "We kind of hate each other."

2002 Olympics Fluff Yagudin, Plushenko & Mishin

Here's an excellent one about Tamara Moskvina, from 1991. "One little human thunderstorm." I daresay she has mellowed a bit with age

Profile on Tamara Moskvina

Brian Joubert fluff from the 2003 Cup of China - "I am 18 years old...my nickname is Babou"

Brian Joubert CoC Fluff

Classic Evan vs. Johnny :laugh2:

Weir and Lysacek 08 Nationals fluff

'"Remember Pasha, I tell you, I kill you..." And then I punched her in the face.'

We need more ice dance drama today. There was some show where Pasha said she was drinking a coke, and since then it evolved into a glass of red wine. Lulz!

That Joubert fluff also reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC-5iPNUGdQ
^^ Can I post that?

Joubert on the beach getting hit on by older ladies and frolicking in the water and splashing other men: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bG7j-04edk

I've seen the first clip before but I forgot about the Lenny Kravitz music..."Calling All Angels"? Kind of random  Never saw the clip of him at the beach...but that's a very good one indeed!

Some didn't like these, I did. From 1994;

Death on the ice

The sameness of compulsory dance. I love dance but I think compulsories could have been kept if they had had maybe three tunes to choose from

http://youtu.be/0HZ8PtVdoRI

Huh, I never even realized it wasn't allowed to "die" on the ice (or did they repeal that?), and I had no idea that compulsory dances were literally all the same! Yes, I'm ignorant...like I said, I don't pay much attention to ice dance, in part because the short dances are so boring to me just using the same patterns & similar types of music - never mind all using the same song! That would have driven me mental!

I think that Joubert work out clip was from a documentary and some person just added in the Kravitz background after... to set the mood I guess. Hahahaha :cheer:

I can't find it online, though I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere on VHS, but back when Lifetime TV was showing the Grand Prix series, they did a segment that wasn't fluff, but an actual dramatic reenactment of Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze's story, including Elena's days trapped in an abusive partnership, her serious injury sustained during side-by-sides with the abusive partner, and her rescue from Latvia by Anton and Moskvina. They all played themselves, and it was very Lifetime TV, and it was surreal. I can see if I can locate it and somehow get it online, but in the meantime if someone can dig it up, it's worth watching.

I love this fluff from of Brian Joubert from 2006 (10 years ago!) working with Nikolai Morosov & Shae-Lynn Bourne (when they were still married). Who knew that Morosov would end coaching Brian's French rival Florent Amodio?

2002 Worlds Ice dance fluff about the whole Drobiazko/Vanagas vs Chait/Sakhnovski drama. Interesting part: [about Chait/Sakhnovski] "They went from 13 to 5th in the World from 1999 to 2000, almost unheard of in the World of Ice Dance". More than 10 years later Papadakis/Cizeron move from 13 to 1st in the World!

2006 Worlds Original Dance Fluff I wish there ware more fluff like this recaping Ice Dance.

I'm sure a lot of people have seen this but: Jenny Kirk & Fedor Andreev skating pairs together. Belbin & Agosto are also featured. Funny that Fedor Andreev and Tanith Belbin were dating at the time and Tanith is now married to Charlie White while Fedor is dating Meryl Davis!

I had no idea Jenny and Fedor tried pairs together. I assume they never actually competed?

AFAIK no they never competed. Their "tryout" was in the summer of 2003 I think. Pairs was something they both wanted to do in addition to single but then they chosed to focus on skating singles in their respective countries I guess.

The Manleywoman Skatecast interviewed Jenny in 2009 and here's what she had to say about skating Pairs:
On trying pairs with Fedor Andreev: It was something that just happened out of chance. Mr. Callaghan saw us practicing lifts off-ice, and said, why don’t you come out on the ice together and do some side by side jumps, and it just kind of took off from there. We were skating, like, six sessions a day between singles and pairs training. But it really helped our singles skating, and to have that partnership and that camaraderie between the two of us – we have a great friendship. It’s too bad that we were never able to compete together, but it’s good for a skater to do something new. You get so used to doing the same five or six jumps every single day, and doing your programs, so it was a great departure for both of us.

I remember taking so many horrible falls when we were learning the throw double axel, but some of my best memories are as I’m on that back edge about to step forward, and I’m telling Fedor, no, I don’t want to jump, I don’t want to jump, and he’s giving me a pep talk, you’re going to be fine, although in pairs skating it’s the girls that take the biggest stumbles and have the biggest bruises at the end of the day [laughs]. But it’s nice to learn to trust somebody else in skating, and to have that friendship that we formed. If I was having a bad day, he was always able to talk me out of it.

How many languages does Carolina speak!!!! German and Italian for sure, at least some English, French.... maybe more, wow

From Wikipedia: Ladin (a Rhaeto-Romanic language), German, Italian, English, and French. I was so impressed by her French. Does she count as being polyglot?

The region in Northern Italy where she is from is trilingual (German-Italian-Ladin), her mother tongue being Ladin (spoken in the valley she is from by roughly only 10.000 people) but obviously they also grow up learning and speaking German and Italian at school. Judging from interviews, she is also fluent in French and English. That's pretty amazing - 5 fluent languages
