It is a wonderful thing that a major magazine is running an article about skating when it is not an Olympic year! Thanks so much for sharing this info. Now I have to go :eek:ut and buy a magazine :cheer: And thanks so much for writing it.

Thank you so much, wonderful Doris! I am so grateful for all you do. I hope you like my piece!

You're welcome. I appreciate your appreciation.:luv17: As for the parts that were cut, hmmm. It sounds like they could be put together for a writer's magazine. For instance, The Writer has some pages that are made up of short pieces of several paragraphs. The part that Redbook cut sounds very inspirational. In fact, it could apply to other endeavors as well, how watching could help one become a better (fill in the blank).

Good idea, Skylark! I will look into that! Yes, I agree- I think that watching skating has inspiring and helpful potential for anyone in becoming the best fill in the blank they want to be!

Simple answer: I didn't! The photo I linked to came from Priscilla's Facebook Page! :p

Thanks for going to my Facebook page! :)

Confession time - I had never even heard tell of Redbook magazine until I read this thread. And I don't think it is available here. (Of the magazines weakankles mentioned, "Good Housekeeping" is the only one I have heard tell of, and that is because there is a UK edition of it).

However, I have been looking for the magazine on eBay, and there are copies of it on sale there already. But, the postage to the UK is making them VERY expensive (It's a bad sign when the postage is more than double the asking price). So, I think I'll wait until a digital version is available.

It should be available within a few months.

Awww, Priscilla! Thank you for those kind words. You're making me blush!:

What???!!! Gordeeva and Grinkov got the chop???!!! That is not right! :disapp:

I was thinking that maybe it was because quite a bit of water has gone under the bridge since they were around (after all, it is 20 years since Sergei died). But, when current skaters were cut as well, this is clearly not the reason.

Being brutally honest, given how she is doing this season, I'm not really surprised that Liza got the cut. But everybody loves Yuzuru and Jason, so I am surprised that they ended up on the cutting room floor as well.

I think they wanted more about life lessons and less about the skaters themselves, frankly. They kept the skaters whose stories lent themselves most effectively to real-life lessons.

Oh well. As I said before, it is an achievement in itself to get a figure skating article into a non-specialised outlet. So, I think we should be happy enough with that.

Yes- I was so excited when they told me they wanted the figure skating piece. I was shocked, and delighted!

From somebody who does not have a writing/publishing background, there is something I am wondering. If you write an article, and it gets published, does the publication now "own" the article? I mean to say, are the publishers able to prevent you from posting it on, say, your website, or your Facebook page, or an internet forum? And if they do have a copyright over it, does that just cover the article as it was published, or the un-abridged version as well?

They have copyright. Once they put it online, I can share the link.

Just curious.

Again, thank you for the compliments, and all the best

Woops- posted too soon- they have copyright but I will share the link when it goes up- probably not till spring at the earliest.

The article now is available online -- or at least a version of it is:

I Learned My Most Important Life Lessons From Watching Figure Skating
If you haven't thought about this sport since Sochi, Priscilla Gilman is here to tell you why you're majorly missing out. There's much more to it than glittery costumes and minor scandals— it's about a true form of triumph, and a better kind of world.

Just read the online piece and it's wonderful; certainly describes the way I feel about figure skating - have felt for years - even getting the most resistant friends/family to share my enthusiasm and recognize FS as a serious sport... (They like Takahashi and Shoma Uno a lot, think Hanyu is inhuman - in a good remarkable way - and love Jason Brown' s skill and exuberance). A HUGE thank you to Wordsworthgirl for getting our favorite sport recognized in mainstream media; hopefully this is one of many such pieces to come...

Finally, I got to read your article wordsworthgirl. :)

Your article has so many wonderful insights, quotable quotes about this sport which we both love, but this for me is the best: "In [figure] skating more than in any other sport, I think, the 'losers' can also be champions." Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
