I'm a fan of Men's Artistic Gymnastics. -And team Japan!
Since this is an international forum, I'd like to hear from other MAG fans from around the world.

Any fans of:
Max Whitlock
Oleg Verniaiev
Manrique Larduet
Danell Leyva (and his dad)

Team China
Team Japan
Team Britain
??

Chime in and lets discuss!

Over in Japan, the NHK Cup has just finished and to no ones surprise Uchimura won his 8th title. But WOW, he was in great shape. With a total of 93 points, he demolished the field.
The rest of the guys had a very close race to get ONE Olympics spot up for grabs at this competition. and Kato Ryohei got it by .1 points. I was very relieved. I trust Kato much more than Tanaka on the Olympic team because even though Tanaka has the potential and difficulty and execution to score higher than Kato, at WC and Olympics, he tends clamp up and make mistakes. Kato has always done his job with few mistakes at important competitions. So I'm glad he was chosen.
Uchimura was chosen for the team last year. So that's two spots of five taken.
Is there anyone here that cheers for Team China? I'm interested to know who is chosen for their team.

I have been rooting for Team Japan since the 2004 Olympics. I know Uchimura wants to have his Hiroyuki Tomita "stuck landing" moment so I hope he achieves it. It's still the most famous gymnastics moment in Japan and I still remember it with excitement. 勝ちました日本!

I was a huge Tomita fan.

I also heard the last gymnast who was part of the 2004 gold winning team, Naoya Tsukahara, has recently retired. He's had a long career. He also coached Uchimura at some point when he was young.

Uchimura wants it so much, it makes him mess up in team competitions. (when he is perfect everywhere else)
Hopefully, he can keep cool, and land that HB routine perfectly.

I know, I jumped out of my seat when he fell off the HB in the team final in Glasgow. Kato was the only one who executed a clean HB routine and he was injured. Tanaka made costly mistakes and Uchimura had to go last after them and I could tell he was frustrated and he didn't focus on his exercise. When they saw they won it was more like a moment of "Really? We actually made it?" and a sigh of relief. But that's not what Uchimura wants. Everything has to be perfect and he has to stick his landing. He won't rest until he gets his legendary Tomita moment.

I am a huge Oleg Verniaiev fan! Elegant gymnastics and a toe point to die for. Everyone who meets him says that he's such a warm and friendly guy so bonus points for me. His 2014 gold parallel bars routine was gorgeous, but I'm still waiting for him to put it all together for an all around medal that he's more than capable of earning.

As a whole team, my favorite is Japan. Their clean and precise form is unmatched and I'm glad they finally brought down the Chinese team in Glasgow (should have won in Nanning, though). GB is quickly growing on me however; they gave my favorite team performance in Glasgow, though there was no doubt it should have been won by Japan. They're definitely threats for a team gold in Rio if Japan is off their game, which admittedly is pretty common.

In terms of excitement, I have two favorites. The first is Epke Zonderland even with his terrible form on the horizontal bar. It's just those insane release connections that get me screaming at my computer! :luv17: And the second is Marian Dragulescu with his insanely powerful vaults. Casually coming out of retirement and winning a silver medal at Worlds within a tenth of gold at age 34 (now 35)? I'm pulling for him to finally win an Olympic gold.

I'm upset, however, that Berki won't be in Rio to defend his pommel horse title because of the ridiculous FIG qualification system that they finally changed for 2020. It's reminiscent of Pegan from Slovenia who was routinely one of the best horizontal bar workers for almost 2 decades and never qualified for the Olympics because of these stupid rules that punished specialists from countries who could't afford to have teams.

I like Oleg a lot as well. There's some sort of jinx on him at Worlds that makes him miss the podium which he is totally capable of attaining. I hope he can get an Olympic medal.

I'm a fan of Ukrainian gymnastics since early 2000's and I've been following Oleg since 2011. I met him at the 2015 World Championships and he was so nice :luv17: (it makes me like him even more). I really hope to see a mistake free AA from him in Rio. He did it in the past (Montpellier, Baku, Gwangju, Test Event) and I'm sure he can make it in Rio!

I'm also a big fan of the other Oleg. His form is fantastic but he's such a headcase  His performances in Glasgow Qual last year were tragic...

It's funny, I like men's gymnastics more than women's, but I know more about the women! (Thanks NBC.)

Definitely will be cheering for Japan and Britain and Uchimura!

I saw Russia won euro men's title over GB but it's unlikely they'll be at the Olympics.

Whitlock had to withdraw due to a virus so the Brits weren't at full strength. Hopefully, they can do even better at Rio.

Russian athletes are under microscope right now and if they are minimally wise, nobody will take prohibithed substances a couple of months before the Olympics. I don't believe the whole Russian team will be banned, it would be very radical. I bet an apple pie it won't happen. :)

You don't have to be guilty of doping to be banned. The problem is the Russian sports establishments.

That's just ridiculous. I hope you don't honestly support such nonsense.
