HYPOTHETICALLY, let's say there's a new Team figure skating event that allows countries to send a team of 4 specialists (similar to Gymnastics); all four team members perform their regular Free Skates, but only scores in spins, step sequences, artistry, and jumps are counted for each individual specialists... Who would you send...? (THIS IS JUST FOR FUN--I'M ONLY DOING LADIES from FIVE COUNTRIES AT THE MOMENT DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS...Please note that I really haven't thought out the details either. Again, just for fun)

Here's my teams:
RUSSIA:
Tsurskaya (jumps)
Lipnitskaya (spins)
Medvedeva (step sequences)
Radionova (artistry)

JAPAN:
Kihira (jumps)
Honda (spins)
Miyahara (step sequences)
Asada (artistry)

USA:
Edmunds (jumps)
Nagasu (spins)
Gold (step sequences)
Wagner (artistry)

CANADA:
Daleman (jumps)
Chartrand (spins)
Tamura (step sequences)
Osmond (artistry)

SOUTH KOREA:
Kim Na Hyun (jumps)
Eunsoo Lim (spins)
Choi Da Bin (step sequences)
Park So Youn (artistry)

OMG yes, I've been thinking about this lately! I wish this system worked in competitions as well, it would be much more attractive.

PS.I don't really like that artistic discipline, it's too subjective. I'd replace it with spirals instead  And all-around competitiin would be regular free skate.

Great thread! Could these categories be like jumps/jump combination, spins, steps/choreo sequence? I'd take off that artistry category too..
If there was such thing, I believe, Mao would take the steps, Satoko/Yulia - the spins, Zhenia/Mao/Liza - the jumps or jumps combinations. Liza/Mao or the young Japanese could be unrivaled with the best execution of 3a:love:

This is a really cool idea! Tbh, I'd enjoy that format more than the current team events the ISU is forcing on us. It would be a fun change from the usual competitions and would actually make more sense then the 'everybody just skates their program' format, regarding the team aspect.

I don't mind the artistry category... it would turn this into a bit of a cheese-fest, but why not? Some competition that are more for fun, for both the skaters and the audience, would be fine with me. I can't take things like the WCC or WTT really seriously either, might as well go all the way.

That said, I have such a hard time deciding which skaters to pick!

I'm too lazy to really think of good examples per country though, so I'll stick to continents, sorry

Men

Asia:
Jumps: Boyang
Spins: DTen
Steps: Shoma?
Artistry: Yuzu

alternative version:
Jumps: Boyang
Spins: Yuzuru
Steps: DTen/Shoma
Artistry: Misha
(and lol, Yuzu is my 'just pushing you into where I don't have any other fitting guy' guy  )

North America:
Jumps: Max
Spins: Adam
Steps: Patrick
Artistry: Jason

Europe:
Jumps: Javier
Spins: Mikhail
Steps: Deniss
Artistry: Jorik or Ivan

Alternatively, Daniel Samohin for jumps (when he's not being a mess) and Javi for artistry (SuperJavi! )

Ladies

Asia:
Jumps: Wakaba
Spins: Satoko
Steps: Mao
Artistry: So-Youn or Rika

North America:
Jumps: Gabby
Spins: Mirai
Steps: Gracie
Artistry: Kaetlyn

Europe (*cough*Russia*cough*):
Jumps: Anna P. or Liza (or Polina, if juniors are allowed! )
Spins: Julia
Steps: Adelina
Artistry: Evgenia or Elena

Uhm, team element events really do happen....

I don't know about other national federations, but Skate Canada has been trying to emphasize fun at the lower development levels... and element and team events are part of the solution.

The lowest figure skating event level, STAR 1, is only free skate elements [3 jumps, 2 spins, spirals] and a 30 second improvised "creative expression". It's competed individually, but many regional and some invitational competitions include a team version. Programs come in at STAR 2, but there are still team element competitions happening at that level and above.

And element-based competitions happen within clubs for fun as well. Sometimes it can get a bit wild...our club had to set upper limits on things like the "most whatever jumps in a row" competitions, but it is a joy be there...

While I really would NOT like this at the Olympics, or as the main event at the senior level, I do really think that elements events, especially team elements events are a great deal of fun. They also build community and appreciation for one another's strengths in a club or region.

-----------------

Editing to add:

What if the ISU authorized some element competitions....team or individual.... outside of the usual system?

They could offer financial prizes, and get sponsors.. It might attract new fans, and increase the appreciation of the sport dimension without sacrificing the artistry of the competitive program..

I merely added "artistry" because I fear without it, PCS might suffer. Perhaps it would be better to have a PCS person, or to include all of the PCS scores in the final tally?

Like in gymnastics, there would be an all-around competition, which would be a regular free skate, that would be judged like today.

There's no gymnastics competition that even remotely follows this format. Maybe the Pro challenge stuff, but I get where you're going with it.

Sorry, I know that, I just haven't really worked out the details. I simply thought it might be interesting to imagine a competition that highlights individuals' strengths that equal a whole. I'm sorry if the title is misleading.
