Australia's Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya and Harley Windsor made history when they skated to the Pairs gold medal at the 2017 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei, on Friday. The Russian-Australian duo became the first skaters to claim gold at an ISU figure skating championship and the first ones to win a medal for Australia in 41 years. In 1976, Elizabeth and Peter Cain had taken a bronze medal in Pairs at Junior Worlds, which was until now, the only figure skating championship medal for the country. Peter Cain, who is coaching singles and pairs in the USA now, witnessed the historic moment in Taipei.

More

No doubt, Alexandrovskaya and Windsor's triumph was the biggest story of the day. Short program leaders Alexandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii of Russia earned the silver medal and China's Yumeng Gao and Zhong Xie took the bronze. Interestingly, all three teams competed in their first season together and debuted at Junior Worlds except for Xie, who competed in 2016 with his previous partner, Ying Zhao.

What are your thoughts on the Pairs event?

It's just very bad to see such obvious collusion in the judging to hurt b/k. Did they have some minor issues yet but you see the American, British and Canadian judges just totally hammer them beyond all measure even going to the point of giving them almost unanimous negative 2 on everything and another judge giving them a 4 in pcs far beyond all the other judges. It's a sad case of total robbery. This has the stink of a couple being punished because their country is seen as being too successful at this jr worlds. B/k were robbed and clobbered by the anti Russia lobby in the world.

Hmm, I'm not sure about anti-Russian lobby in the pairs at this JWC, in the ladies - yes, but not in the pairs. Boikova/Kozlovski really skated not so good. Almost all their elements were shaky. I'm glad that they didn't lose to Chinese with their boring program, but Australians definitely were better than B/K. Atakhanova/Spiridonov got best scores in the FS, but because of bad SP they didn't win.

But only the us Canadian and British judges gave b/k such horrible scores. All the other judges were similar. 6 and 7's with some negative 1's but you have the American Canadian and British with their -2 or -3 and Pcs 4 or 5.00

Really excited to see the result for Australia!

[And am finding the 'wuz robbed' comments are getting a bit old....]

And would like to point out that it's a great moment also for indigenous competitors in international sports events. :cool2: [It would be great to know of any historic medal winners with indigenous identity at ISU Championships.]

Sincerely, hope that the Katia and Harley do well at senior worlds. It would be great to see them and team Australia at the Olympics in both the team and individual events.

Not to mention that it's really encouraging to see the 5th place finish by Canada's Evelyn Walsh and Trennt Michaud. Trennt's a seasoned pairs skater, but folks had wondered if teaming up with Evelyn [who is new to pairs] in late summer was going to work. Evelyn's more than showed in less than 9 months she has the fire and grit of a pairs girl, and an international competitor. :2thumbs:

A Fantastic result for Katia and Harley. Bravo!! A great result for Australia.

Watching the event, it was plain for all to see that they were the best couple on the day. The other couples in contention made too many errors and were slow across the ice.
This made their programmes look rather "laboured" and unconvincing. The scores were a true indication of the performance levels on the day.

Looking forward to Katia and Harley skating at the World Championships. A great opportunity for them to gain further experience in the "senior world" Good Luck Kids!!

I assume there isn't enough time for Alexandrovskaya to receive Australian citizenship before 2018 Olympics?

There is, actually. We have a special fast-track routes for talented athletes, particularly in Olympic years. The AOC's immigration lawyers have been working on this one for months now - I'd like to hope this will have sped up the process a little.
