It seems to me that a major reason the second gold medal was awarded in Salt Lake was because the Canadians were prepared to take the whole mess to the CAS (Court for the Arbitration of Sport) right then and there. That would be the last thing the IOC (or the ISU) powers-that-be would want, particularly during the games. Ponder that.

Also bear in mind that the IOC is still extremely angry with the ISU for the embarrassment that was caused due to the improprieties, and now we see that other sports have the same problem. It seems the IOC will have no choice but to address this issue at their 118th Session next July in Singapore.

Although the IOC says it is up to the International Federations to make their own rules, the IOC certainly has the right to insist that the rules made must ensure integrity. As a result of what has happened in Salt Lake and in Athens, I would not be at all surprised if all the members of the IOC found themselves demanding that all International Federations have effective measures in place to ensure officiating accuracy and accountability along with effective deterrents for malfeasance. There is considerable financial pressure for this to happen, so do not forget the commercial sponsors. John Hancock Insurance is still a major sponsor of the Olympics, both to the IOC and the USOC, and David D'Allesandro, the CEO of John Hancock, has proven in the past that John Hancock will not hesitate to hold either organization accountable; it did so successfully with the USOC and as a result, the USOC made major changes in the way it does business. Think about it. :D
