Any predictions?

Men
I'm guessing Artur Dmitriev, Ryuichi Kihara and Joshua Farris will be podium favorites

Ladies
Julia Lipnitskaya! I think she has all 5 triples, including combos like 3T+3T, 2A+3T and perhaps 3F+3T. She also have been steady at the national level. Samantha Cesario, who had a good outing at Liberty, and Lauren Dinh who is more unreliable. Perhaps Juulia Turkkila and Kate Charbonneau, but I dunno. Turkkila only did 3T and 3S last season, and Charbonneau had a horrible season.

Pairs
Weak compared to Volvo Cup. I'm thinking Tudvaseva/Lisiev will medal, but haven't seen the other pairs.

Ice dance
Favorites are Sinitsina/Zhiganshin who did well at the Russian test skates. Other podium favorites are Galyeta/Shumski and Papadakis/Cizeron. Will the Americans and Canadian be a factor? (I haven't seen them skate before).

The Parsons are the US Novice 2011 champions.
You'd have to go to icenetwork for the video.

Mancini & Brooks were the novice silver medallists. They had only been skating together for a year at the time.

I'm not expecting a lot from either.

I think Canada's best hope is Bobak/Beharry. I think they have a real chance at a medal here. They have been really strong since they teamed up after Nationals. They have really good results from Indy and in Thornhill. They look really wonderful. Something special about that team.

I'd really like to see Hasagawa's do well here. They were my personal favourites at Junior Nationals last year. They should have been at least 2nd, and maybe 1st based on the strength of their SD. They had the misfortune of skating first of the whole competition in the SD, and yet had the most lovely program of everyone - great concept, lovely edges, great patterns, matching lines, absolutely charming. They showed tremendous improvement under Dubreil/Lauzon, and their previous posture issues were gone. I haven't seen them yet this season, so I hope they have continued to grow and improve so they do well internationally.

Bruser/Lum are one of the BC wonderkids teams that moved up from Novice. It's their first international assignment as a team. I don't know what to expect from them, to be honest. Of the teams at Novice last year, they were my favourite of the teams from BC. But they are young, first year Junior, and don't have the age/maturity of some of the more seasoned Juniors that could also have been chosen for this competition. For sure it is great experience for Bruser/Lum, but my own personal preference would have been to give the spot to Fournier-Beaudry/Breton or Paradis/Ouellette, both of whom had good seasons at Junior last year, and hopefully have continued to grow and improve. Paradis/Ouellette and Hasagawa's were almost tied on the FD at Quebec summer competition this year. But perhaps both those teams will yet be given an assigment.

I'm really excited to see how Bobak / Beharry do in pairs, and I've only seen stills of them so far, but wow! that twist....

I was also very favourably impressed with the Hasegawas at last yr's nationals.. And I saw their FD from the Quebec summer skate. I was apprehensive, because it's to Black Swan and I fear I'll feel overwhelmed by all the swanning around ,across all discplines , by the end of the season .. but I really liked their program..even her costume, which is not a Tutu ( so doesn't get in the way ) , but like a short soft ballet skirt ( much more suitable for skating ,IMO )
Their SD ..( Cha cha D'amour / Cherry pink )I haven't seen.

I like Bruser & Lum , but they were marked quite a bit behind O/W at BCSS ( not in the same ball park ,like H/H ).. They have a sort of Pop Tango FD ...Hmmmm..*sigh* ..(which is a comment on the music, not their skating ) and I wasn't terribly thrilled with their SD music either ... James Brown's " Get up Offa That Thing " wrenched into Rhumba and "Dock of the Bay " for Cha cha..

I have no Idea where they'll fit in internationally .

I'm not finding a lot to like so far in the SD's this yr..I'm kind of hoping the ISU will reconsider the whole set up at next yr's congress.

Sato had a fall on the 3Lz due to UR and a 3T3T with the last jump severely UR. Both got -3 GOE's
Dinh had an edge call on the 3Lz and a 3F2T combo

Wow, that was a photo finish in the Pairs event. So many teams so close together. There's 7.26 points between 1st and 5th, which is a long way in dance, but I'm not sure in pairs. But only 3.54 between 2nd and 5th. The FD should be quite interesting.

Lipnitskaya finished first deservedly. She has made quite a bit of improvement since the last time I watched her. Much more polished and improved skating skills. But I don't know if having her that much higher in PCS can be justified. Her program was kind of boring compared to the Japanese girls.

All in all, this year's ladies JGP field is INCREDIBLY deep!

Miyahara only has only 3F+2T.

I think you are mistaking her with someone else. She landed 3F-3T and received full credit with positive GOEs. Protocols:
http://www.isuresults.com/results/jgppol2011/jgppol2011_JuniorLadies_SP_Scores.pdf
She also landed it in a show this off-season: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v90QN4moA3I

She's also capable of landing 3Lz-3T and 2A-3T in the second half of her LP (as she did in a local competition this off-season).

I think Miyahara was hurt by skating early and her very youthful appearance. She looks about 8-9 to me. ^^' She was a bit off on the spins today, which is a shame, because usually she has really nice spins. I love it that she spins in both directions.
Sato was a bit off on jumps tday, although I'm imressed that she went for 3-3 (the last time I've seen her, she struggled with 3T) and improved her spins and speed.

Juila was amazing, although I agree that she could use more interesting choreography.

This JGP field looks very promising for the future, indeed.

Sheesh. Joshua Farris' score would have put him 9th at Senior World's after the short last year (beating out Ricky, Ryan, and Ross in 11, 12, and 13). What's with these babies doing so well? I'm *pleasantly* shocked.

However, Artur's score would have put him 17th and Kihara 22nd. After that no one would qualify for the short.

When comparing to Junior Worlds, Joshua would have been 1st, Artur 6th (he was actually 2nd), and Kihara 10th. I just think it's neat to compare scores from early this season to what was the end of last. It keeps my brain in check or something :D

And just for fun, let's do ladies. In comparing to Senior Worlds:

Julia would have been 5th. Miyahara would have been 9th (ahead of Korpi and Murakami), and even Cessario would be in 14th, just behind Phaneuf. Fourth through sixth would have qualified for the long.

Now let's compare these girls to Junior World's:
Julia would have been 1st, Miyahara 4th, Samantha 6th, Kate 11th (are you taking notice Skate Canada?!), and Sato 11th. Dinh would have been 11/12th. The lowest qualifying score through to the free last year was 38.12 so everyone here up to 11th would have been good.

Just some interesting thoughts early in the season :)

Just got the chance to take a look at the SP's. Good for Kate Charbonneau. That was a really solid technical skate, and her spins and footwork were beautiful. I hope she can make it to the podium. It would be such a boost for the struggling women's field in Canada.

I've never heard of Samuel Angers before, but he seems pretty solid. Does anyone happen to know how old he is?

As for the pairs, it's really too bad abour Bobak/Beharry's throw. The video does not do their skating justice. I got to see them live at Thornhill, and they were wonderful. I think they will be very sucessful in the near future. Hopefully they can have a better skate in the free.

Kate did 2A, 3Z (-GOE) and 3T+2T in her SP. Last year in the JGP, she struggled with the SP (scoring about 39 in both events); she scored in the 60s for her first event and about 75 in her second. She finished out of the top 10 both events.

She competed at Skate Detroit this summer. In the preliminary round, she scored a total 128.99 in her group, having placed 2nd in the SP and 5th in the FS. In the final round FS, she was 5th, scoring 72.16.

The lowest bronze medalists so far in the JGP have scored 141.84 (Agafonova, JGP LAT) and 145.48 (Lam, JGP AUS). To match that performance level, Kate would have to score 92-96 in the FS and of course Cesario, Sato, Dinh and Zaseeva would have to score lower than Kate. She has her work cut out for her.

I've never heard of Samuel Angers before, but he seems pretty solid. Does anyone happen to know how old he is?

Angers' birthdate is 4/29/93, which makes him 18, so this is his last year of junior eligibility. He was 8th as a Junior at 2011 Canadian Nationals and 2nd as a Novice in 2010.

It is fun to compare scores, but I feel that scores on the junior circuit are more generous than scores on the senior circuit. Say if the skater just came out of juniors I don't think he'll be getting the same scores that he/she got in juniors in seniors. Comparisons are fun though b/c it's adds excitement for the future :D

1. Good for Farris. I was very upset with what happened at Nationals, super happy that he left Tom Z. and seeing just how well he did, pretty much elated. That was a lovely skate. Man, the American men/boys certainly are putting on a heck of a show this season. Farris and Brown have set themselves up very nicely to do well straight until World juniors. Very very happy. Very.

2. It's kind of funny to see how sneaky COP rules can be. For example, if either the male or female pairs skater exits the lift on two feet, it's an automatic -3 GOE. Check out B/B's lift. For no reason other than to avoid that -3, he lifts his foot rather slightly. It's actually an odd moment because the exit doesn't need it (for aesthetic purposes). Lovely program, though.

3. Simpson/Blackmer look VERY confident. Nice to see. They had poise, precision, and a really interesting program. Loved the sinchronicty throughout and the step sequence was actually quite clever.
