Redding's Brooklee Han Skates Closer To Olympic Dream

"REDDING, Conn. -- Redding's Brooklee Han, who represents Australia in figure skating, finished fifth at Friday's 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy competition in Germany. But for Han, it was a first-place victory.

The Nebelhorn event also served as the Olympic qualifier for figure skating, with six spots open for ladies to earn for their countries to compete in the games in Sochi, Russia, in February.

Han's solid skate, worth a total of 147.16 points, was the highest among those going for Olympic spots and, therefore, earned a place for an Australian ladies figure skater in the winter games. She is considered the front-runner for the spot to represent Australia in the Olympics...."

Clowning around all the way to Sochi

"FIGURE SKATING: The Olympics are sometimes referred to as the five-ringed circus – which will make Danielle O’Brien and Greg Merriman feel right at home. Overnight, the childhood friends from Sydney have delivered a circus-inspired ice dance that will see them roll up, roll up all the way to the Sochi 2014 Olympics..."

Australia's new skating darling

"Brooklee Han’s first passion was horse riding, and many assumed she would follow in her parents' footsteps.

Her dad was the Australian Junior Young Rider Eventing Champion and her mother worked for the US Equestrian team.

Instead, the 18-year-old has become Australian ice skating’s new darling..."

Han secures skate spot for Australia

Brooklee Han has secured Australia a place in the figure skating for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

American-born and raised Brooklee Han has secured Australia a place in the ladies' individual figure skating for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

Han, who has an Australian father, finished in fifth place overall at the Nebelhorn Trophy event in Germany.

The 18-year-old, who lives and trains in Connecticut, was first of the non-qualified competitors for the Games.

There were six Games places on offer from the event.

Skating to the soundtrack of the Taiwanese movie Secret, Han skated well, only faltering slightly on one jump in her free program.
Her segment score of 98.42 and total score of 147.16 eclipsed her previous personal bests of 91.26 and 141.88 respectively, which she achieved at the 2013 World Championships.

Four Aust skaters secure Olympic berths

A record-equalling four figure skaters have qualified to represent Australia at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi,

Men's figure skater Brendan Kerry and ice dancing couple Danielle O'Brien and Greg Merriman all booked their spots on Saturday at the qualifying event in Obertsdorf, Germany.

Kerry overcame a suspected broken wrist suffered during the warm-up on Friday to finish first among the 28 men still seeking Olympic qualification.

Kerry, who will be 19 at the Sochi Games, follows in the footsteps of his mother Monica MacDonald who competed in the ice dancing at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.

"I almost cried when the results came up - I'm so proud of Bren," said MacDonald.

O'Brien, 23 and Merriman, 24 booked their tickets to their first Winter Olympics after finishing sixth in their free dance at the Nebelhorn Trophy.

The trio join American-born and raised Brooklee Han, who claimed her spot in the ladies' individual figure skating on Friday.

Going to do some maths now.
I'm curious to see Australia's odds of making the team event....it's very slim but it's still worth a try.

Ok! So currently Canada, China, Italy, Russia and the United States are automatic qualifiers.

There are seven countries that have to possibility to make the team event. They are
-Australia
-Estonia
-France
-Germany
-Great Britain
-Japan
-Ukraine

Okay. Now France, Germany and Japan are surely through so I won't bother with them
I'll try to add up the points for Australia, Estonia, Great Britain and Ukraine and I'll get back to you.

Wrist injury can't stop teen Brendan Kerry skating to Sochi

"Teenager Brendan Kerry has defied a suspected broken wrist to become a second-generation Olympian as one of four Australian figure-skaters who qualified for the Sochi Games at the weekend qualifying event in Germany.

Kerry, the 18-year-old son of 1988 Olympic ice dancer Monica MacDonald, will continue a family tradition when he competes in Sochi in February.

He qualified for the games by finishing fourth among non-qualified athletes at the Nebelhorn Trophy. Six Olympic places were available.

Despite the wrist injury, sustained in a warm-up the previous day, Kerry produced the best performance of his career, scoring 188.67 points..."
