These days, even glimpses of him are hard to find.

True. He always looks good though. I'm wondering what would his plan after this year. He can graduate the school if he submits dissertation in a regular course.

So Tatsuki has skated his 5th self-choreographed program, Ave Maria performed by Chris Botti
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JqOMeTGWnQ

He wrote a whole new essay about it which I will translate and post here if anyone is interested. The program has no jumps. He got a standing ovation from the audience, technical panel and some of the ladies in the kiss&cry. A few pictures of him from practice and in his Ave Maria outfit

His program was not broadcasted but I read on twitter there's going to be another JO broadcast on October 9. Hopefully they will include him then.

Tatsuki wrote a post on his website today, mostly thanking everyone from staff to fans. The finale number skated to Michael Jackson's "Heal The World" left a big impression on him. The Saitama arena holds a special place in his heart and his EX "Ave Maria" was basically dedicated to what this arena meant to him in the past (Nationals 2013 where he made it on the Sochi Olympics team; Worlds 2014).

It's very difficult to translate his wording properly but he says that through skating, he would like to continue experiencing such precious, once-in-a-lifetime events. It's a confirmation that he will keep skating and being part of these shows.

That's true, none of the other Japanese men have been filling his shoes since he retired.

continuation from Shoma's thread, because we got way off-topic there

do you guys think Shoma has a bit of a crush on Daisuke?? ;)

Shoma no but Tatsuki Machida definitely yes. At least back in the day.

ETA: Between us, I think it might have been mutual. :sarcasm:

lol I think their personalities would clash badly in a relationship. (Now Kenji and him on the other hand...it's too bad Kenji got married recently ;))

Not at all, quite the opposite. They were a great support to each other in Sochi and, well, pics like these speak for themselves.

Have you ever seen Dai looking at someone like that

In all seriousness it's not even speculation; Tatsuki was rooming with Yuzuru at first but moved in Dai's room as soon as he arrived in Sochi and they talked about having "McDonald's picnic in bed" and "dancing together" :sarcasm:

Later when Tatsuki skated his "Je Te Veux" program, they had a press conference at PIW and he was asked if the program was really dedicated to someone and he just gave a sly smile, made eye contact with Dai who was right beside him and said "it's a secret". Once again, these are actual reports from the fans who were there, I'm not making it up. The fans talked about the message of the program and several people agreed on "letting go of the loved one". The ending pose definitely looks like that.

First of all to clear up possible misunderstandings here: I didn't say you're making anything up nor was it my intention to imply that, honestly. :)

I know of all of the events that you are summarizing here and I agree on the crush-theory and also that it might have been a mutual crush for a very short while. (And in my opinion this is still speculation.) Based on what we know about both of their personalities (and tbh it's not that much or at least we only know their public personae), I think that they would probably clash in an actual relationship though. (Because I wouldn't say rooming together for a few days is really comparable.) Maybe I should have put this guy ;) after that sentence in my initial post to avoid being taken seriously.

But now you got me intrigued about this. Have there been tangible indications of an actual relationship?

No no, I didn't think about that; it's just that the details may seem exaggerated at first glance - I mean I wouldn't believe everything if I didn't know there is proof

Now that you mention an actual relationship I agree with you. There were so many factors that wouldn't have made it work which is why I think whatever there was between them has long been over.

Of course none of them have ever admitted anything or talked about it but the strongest indications were their body language and Tatsuki's program Je Te Veux and what he said about it.

As far as body language is concerned, there have been several instances

Completely unaware that they were filmed

Tatsuki on Daisuke's retirement (source)
Takahashi-senshu’s retirement is a devastating blow to the figure skating world and to me, personally. Japan’s growth and development in figure skating is because of his achievements. For me personally, Takahashi-senshu is a skater who I admire, someone who motivates me to work hard and is someone I have learned a lot from

I do not believe there is anyone else like you with the strength and purity to make their dreams and goals come true. With your incredible talent and abilities, I wholeheartedly pray for the seedlings of the brand new chapter in your life to grow. I hope opportunities for us to appear together in many ice shows together come around. Thank you for all your support now and in the future.

Tatsuki on his 2014-2015 SP Fantasy for Violin & Orchestra
This program is about sad love. Until last season, I did not think that I was capable to express the music fully. Now I feel ready for this music.

"Upon being asked about Machida Tatsuki's abrupt retirement, Takahashi Daisuke answers with a bitter smile."
http://thetv.jp/news_detail/54390/image298169.html

"He really shocked me but… he never said he would continue his competitive career until the next Olympics. Although I think he quit because he already had a different goal in mind, it was still quite a shock.”

Coach Yoshinori Onishi secretly invites Daisuke to Tatsuki's farewell ceremony at the Rinkai Sports Center. "I knew Daisuke being there would make him happy," his coach said. Tatsuki's reaction at the surprise

There's probably more I don't remember right now but finally, Tatsuki's program "Je Te Veux" interpreted by fans
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5AS_Ixzmbw

In the first half of the program he's waltzing wearing a man's coat, then he hangs the coat on the mannequin and kisses the scarf. He then skates by himself and at one point the lights dim and the mannequin disappears behind the curtains, leaving him with the scarf. He's waltzing once again, this time holding the scarf in the dark and in the final pose when the lights go out he grips the scarf and brings it up to his lips.

The interpretation I've read is something like this: Tatsuki's whole career as a junior and senior skater up until that moment had been influenced by Daisuke so he's dancing with the coat. After the Sochi Olympics, Tatsuki was left by himself at the World Championships where he made his own mark and got out of the shadow of his more famous team mates so he hangs the coat on the mannequin but kisses the scarf as if it's a "thank you for everything" gesture. After that the spotlight is only on him, until the mannequin disappears and he's left alone with the scarf, which represents the memories he has made with "the man in the coat". His interpretation becomes a bit melancholic as he dances with the scarf and holds it like a precious item.

... well I can totally write a book about the psychoanalysis of Tatsuki Machida. :slink: It's been a while since I last tried to interpret his work.

Ioanna thanks for your post. Daisha and Tatsuki are so cute :agree:
I was never a huge fan of Tatsuki's competitive programs I gotta say but I remember watching his Je the veux EX I was really emotional and reading about the interpretation of the program makes it even more emotional and bittersweet.

Watch all of his self-choreographed programs, they're on the first page of the thread. They're all better than most of his competitive programs. :)

I did mention the word relationship in my initial post in the Shoma thread, not just now. ;)

While I hold different views on the narrative, it was interesting to read your take on this "love-story in Russia". That detailed interpretation of "Je te veux" was new to me, so thank you for that! :)

Onto my own views, I think Tatsuki and Dai bonded over their shared disappointment with their results in Sochi and Dai was probably flattered by Tatsuki's obvious infatuation (I would love to know what Tatsuki told Dai when he couldn't "escape" in that room.) He was also incredibly emotionally drained, which might've made him even more responsive to the attention from his kohai. Of course I might be wrong, but I just don't believe that this developed into more than maybe a pretty short-lived crush from Dai's side. (I'm not doubting Tatsuki's "more profound intentions" - sorry for the lack of a better expression.)

Regarding Dai's behaviour around Tatsuki in Sochi, we also have to take the cultural differences into account as it appears that among the younger generations even straight japanese close male friends are more touchy-feely with each other than western guys, at least when there's drinking involved which there most likely was before the closing ceremony. And yes, Dai appears to be like that with several of his friends in social situations - the giggling, touching, embracing, everything. (I don't know how close he is with each of them, but I can't imagine, that he has an increased romantic interest in all of them. But then again, who knows? :laugh2:)

I also can't imagine Dai being so tactless to openly talk about wanting a partner right in front of Tatsuki at the Kansai honor ceremony had there indeed been more than a platonic, friendly bond between them at some point.

And aw, did Tatsuki tear up during that speech at his farewell ceremony? Did it say so in the accompanying article? I can't judge from the picture and unfortunately there was no video material of it (I think).

It's a really interesting topic, but also almost entirely speculative.

On a completely different note: Do we know what Tatsuki is up to right now? Does he intend to do a doctorate/is he already working on one?
