I don't think the assistant technical specialist has much power.
When Amano was an assistant technical specialist of Skate America this year, Mao's 3A was ratified in her short program.

Oops, mistake :) Who's Shin Amano anyways...?? I think I am missing some information here... Was there a history of him/her giving an under-rotation call to Mao?
He has a history of being a strict caller in general, not just at Mao.

Lol...I love this analysis of Amano's past competitions.

Perhaps it is as simple as whether he got his coffee today.:sarcasm:

Which is why I'm a little puzzled by the reaction against him... he is known to be a strict caller. And from my untrained eye her axel did seem a little UR.

I guess because nobody else got UR calls, including Ashley, who some argue has been given a pass on her 3F-3T in the past.

A lot of thoughts after watching this great competition and especially the surprising score details:
- Judges are still unable to vary their marks in PCS: a skater who's great in interpretation and lacks in skating skills will still get almost identical scores in both. Same goes for a skater who's great at skating skills but less convincing in interpretation. Sad. Somehow we've all gotten used to the fact that objective judging is impossible. Since skaters work so hard, it seems ludicrous to me that this isn't even questioned anymore, especially the whole "you skate 10 minutes later so you get better PCs no matter what" aspect.
- At least, seems to me they have adjusted to the fact judges are the hopelessly weak link in the figure skating chain. Unable to mark the 5 different PCS adequately, but now they're willing to "customize" the TES:
They gave Lipnitskaia an edge deduction for her lutz (first time ever?); they gave Wagner level 3 for her step sequence where the others got level 4; they downgraded Asada's 3A when it looked so much more completed to me than most the 3As sher got full credit for in the past...
- It seems more and more important to me WHERE the events are held: GPF in Japan and OG in Russia gives the japanese and russian skaters a humongous boost in marks: because it's their home crowd, or because they want to prepare us all for a russian success at Sochi... That's how I interpreted Aratunian and Wagner's look at each other after the marks: "seems like we've lost some favour from the judges - nothing we can do about it".
- Asada didn't seem pleased about her marks to me. She was respectful and put on a smile and "yay! thumbs up" after a few seconds of what I interpreted as her thinking "what? My 3A got downgraded? No way!"
- We've seen Chan always get huge PC scores in the past even when his programmes were filled with mistakes. Now, suddenly, this has gone (a bit). Hanyu getting HIGHER PCs would have been unthinkable 12 months ago. Same goes for Lipnitskaia getting huge PCs in comparison to Costner at CoR, which is why Costner didn't make it to the finals.

I thought Amano was the technical specialist in the 2010 worlds SP, where Mao's 3A was called UR, although a lot of people (and of course her fans at that) thought it was clean. Could be wrong though...
And Amano has a reputuaion of being harsh on japanese skaters in general, the men and other ladies besides Mao too, as far as I know. Now I don't really want to get into any kind of conspiracy theories, so I don't agree with this, but it's hard to get around hearing it.

Just watched Julia and now just have to say that she was underscored. Amazing performance, spins did not travel this time... Hope she puts a great free skate and gets on the podium!

The Russian girls have Ashley surrounded (score-wise). She's in trouble unless they bomb the free.

And also I don't know what to think about Elena's pcs - it was a bit low for my taste =/

Could it be that Mr. Amano doesn't want to be seen as "favoring his country men/women" and ends up being seen as more strict on them?

Anna got higher PCS than Elena...?? I haven't seen the performance yet so I can't be sure of anything, but I thought Elena was usually superior to Anna or even to Julia (in some ways) in terms of PCS...

because Radionova still looks like prebubescent compared to the other girls
