I still can't get over last night performances. It's been 14 years since no Japanese ladies qualified to GPF. I hope they come back stronger on Nats
I am putting my high hopes on Satoko

Thanks for the background information, deedee1. Did Akiko get her jumps from her former coach or Mr Nagabuko? She's not a power jumper per se but she didn't have problems with UR or wrong edges, did she? I recently rewatched her performances in 2007, when she was already 22 and noticed that her skating skills had improved so much by 2012. Mr Nagabuko is such a great technical coach.

Sorry I didn't reply you earlier, thoakun.

In her novice/junior days Akiko's musicality and perfomance ability was remarkable already https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoLqRQuFocA and that made her (along with Yukina Ota https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQesHf74tgk ) standout among other talented younger skaters including Miki or Yukari who were rather known as jumping beans IIRC.
Mr Nagakubo only helped her part time; e.g. during summer breaks, till she graduated from high school, but it was Spring 2003 when she started working with him full time. It took time for her to shine on the senior international circuit, but no doubt Nagakubo played the important role for her success in her later acreer. Since her jump technique was not textbook a la YuNa's, she was called on UR and !/e from time to time. And a bit bigger problem for her was at one competition she got e calls on her 3Lz, then she would get ! call on 3F at next competition, thus caused her losing some precious CoP points away for podium finishes in big events like the Wolrds and Oly Games unfortunately.

While Nagakubo adviced her a number of times to add 3-3 combo to her jump arsenal aiming for podium finish, she never agreed with her coach saying 'No way I can do any triple-triples at my age'. It was 2011-12 season, however, she finally started practicing 3T-3T. For the first time in her competitive career. At Skate Canada she missed the landing and doing only 3T-1Lo, but her second attempt at NHK Trophy she did it beautifully with GoE 1.20. http://www.isuresults.com/results/gpjpn2011/gpjpn2011_Ladies_SP_Scores.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss_ATALA56E At 1:05, do you hear all the shout outs from the crowds out of surprise, and joy at the same time? And her priceless expressionat the end, jumping up and down, and all crowds sprang onto their feet for applauding Akiko. :)
It's 100 times more impressive than one such simple word 'impressive' to nail 3-3 combo at age 26. And that season she finally won the world bronze medal in Nice which she so deserved!

Looks like no one posted about about one of Japan's new ID team, so here they are!

Kana Muramoto and Hiroichi Noguchi recently competed as a Senior Ice Dance team in the Tallin Trophy a few days ago. They ended the event with an overall 4th place finish.

Although they did not meet this year's tech score for worlds, they have a high enough TES for 4CC this season. They're improving really well!

:hb: Many congrats to Shoma Uno & Sota Yamamoto for their great performances and going 1st & 2nd at JGF this weekend! :hb:

Good luck to Sota & Shoma! :yay: Make us proud of ya two!

I wrote the above right before SP in JGPF threads, but I didn't expect they would actually go 1st & 2nd after Free skates tbh. So happy they proved me wrong. ;)

Hi! :) This season's Nats is not in Tokyo area, thus not attending unfortunately...
I agree, would like Shoma to be on the World team next season, even if he finishes on the podium this season. He should win the Jr Worlds title first while being within the reach, and this season is the best timing for him I think. (For that same matter, I feel sorry for Ricky a couple of seasons ago; he didn't go to Jr Wolrds, where he could have won the title sooo easily after winning JrGPF that season IIRC, just because he placed 2nd at Sr US Nats thus got sent to Sr Worlds instead. Without having competed on the senior Grand Prix circuit at all, you know. Then his struggles on the senior circuit sort of has started and missed making Sochi team. I sometimes wonder how it would have been different for Ricky if he had moved up to the senior after taking more appropriate/desirable step at a time e.g. by winning all jr titles...

You plan going to 2016 Worlds I am so happy for you, demarinis. ANd cheer for Shoma for me, too, please!

Japan knows how to market Figure Skating...

Edit.

I want this poster super sized on my wall

They used to and probably still do plaster these posters on the subway trains. They say Japan is the home of figure skating. I really don't doubt that now. :)

Hi deedee. Thanks for all the updates, much appreciated. :) Will you be attending JN?

My dream (I admit it is a little selfish) is for Shoma to make the World Team next season, that way I can go and cheer for
him in person.

Her is an article from nikkansport. I put it in Shoma's fan thread too.

http://www.nikkansports.com/sports/news/p-sp-tp0-20141214-1408850.html

I hope your dream comes true! I actually bought Worlds '16 tickets with the hope of watching Shoma skate and also because it's taking place in my city. All prepared to buy a Japanese flag and make a sign for Shoma. :cheer:

Looks like they don't like Yuzuru's POTO costume ? :laugh2: Or they love R&J costume ?

Or they didn´t have time. It appears that is a magazine, so in basic print time you will need at least a 2 week depending of the quality of the print to get the job done, so since all the pictures from CoC will be with blood and bandage on the head these pictures couldn´t be used. And from NHK it wasn´t his best moment to take pictures either, so they went with R&J2.0 pictures
