Can anyone help me understand why the Chinese pairs always seem to lose levels on their death spirals? I loooove Sui and Han's skating but it feels like their death spirals always get level 3s, max.

What is proper death spiral position for the girl?
Sometimes they have a very arched back and are high off the ice versus other times they are more straight-backed and are very close to the ice. I’m no expert but these seem like very different positions.

Probably the higher arched positions you're seeing are on backward outside edge death spirals, and the straighter lower ones are either forward inside or backward inside edges. (Almost no one does forward outside death spirals.)

According to the technical panel handbook,

Lady’s “low position”: - for inside Death Spirals the lowest hip or buttock and head should not be higher than her skating knee; - for outside Death Spirals head should not be higher than her skating knee and bodyline between knee of skating leg and head should be flat or shallow arch.

Within those requirements, you will see variations. And some preferences between different variations on the same edge might just be a matter of taste.

Level 4 death spirals requires difficult entry or exit and 3 revolutions with both in low position. Either Sui or Han was considered out of the low position in the last turn (frankly I didn't see that even in slow motion but the tech panel thought so).

In the last several quads before 14-15 season, pairs can up their levels by changing holding hands, ladies grab their blades or men doing forward pivot. You can see that in Sui&Han's Flamingo program.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P132eCpw5c
Now the only two ways to up the levels are difficult entry/exit and extra revolutions which make death spirals boring.

I really like Vanessa and Morgan's spiral, which I can't describe so here's a video:

I don't care for the back outside spirals, the look inelegant to me!

I also really liked V/T's one: https://youtu.be/pISpVbrsP9o at 2:52 I thought that leg kick thing of Max's was super cool.

I'm also a fan of when the man does the dramatic arm thing and also when they used to change hands whatever happened to those?

I too wanna see the day when the lady spirals the man, that'd be epic!

Also, since BODS and FODS have higher BVs, you can up your BV in a season when BODS is required in SP since you need to have two different death spirals in SP & FP.
Currently, only Daria Pavliuchenko / Denis Khodykin can do a Forward-Outside Death spiral and even they don't get max levels, the FODS still worth more than level 4 death spirals.

Shen&Zhao are known for good throws and twists but they also have the best Forward-Outside death spirals. they have one in their 2010 FP. https://youtu.be/5TFHsAKYGzo

the girl's head should not be higher than her knee of her skating foot. So when doing the outside spirals, girls will have arched backs. when doing inside spirals, they will have straight positions but laying their heads back.

Xiaoyu yu has a unique position among the athletes these days, her arm movements are glorious.

Ooo that's so elegant (it's a 3.07 for the curious/rushed)! :luv17: Even for a back outside

I hear she and Zhang will be back in competition next season so that's something to look forward to.

I was watching old skating programs on YouTube and I was a bit surprised to see that 1. They used to do two death spirals in the long program and 2. They didn't do nearly so many revolutions. I like the rule change that called for more revs, ISU did good there...for once!

Mishk/Dmitriev had a gorgeous death spiral combo in their Liebestraum program. Flawless.

I think I remember Jenni Meno doing some pretty awesome death spirals too.

Is this the one where she does the splits on the ice in the middle of the element?

I LOVE that one with the split in the middle, and really that entire ending is so beautiful. And here is Meno/Sand's back outside/forward inside combination, which is also lovely. This Meno/Sand program reminds me that pairs skating didn't always feel so rushed. Programs of the past had more space to breathe! (Just before the death spiral is their signature lift - nobody does that dismount anymore, and I miss the days when one position could be held in a lift because it wasn't about levels).

Holy moly, that is one wicked death spiral sequence. I like how Artur just casually picking her back up where he left her lol, and she finished with some sort of Bielmann death spiral.

It's perhaps my all-time favorite element from any discipline of figure skating.
It gives me chills every time I watch it.
