LOL
the saga of RusFed needing to make up their mind continues....

So is this what is holding up the publication of the Entry Lists for the Universiade (and, hence, it's Predictions Game round)?! The Russian Fed constantly changing their minds about who is going where?!

OK, so I am being a bit tongue in cheek. But, I am getting beyond frustrated that we don't even have a Provisional Entry List yet, and the skating starts in 5 days! :bang:

But, getting back to Maria, it will be great to see her in action again. With her doing so few competitions this season, I've been really missing her!

Yay for Masha having a nice competition to end her season though. I can't wait to see her SP again!
(ugh I hope a nice FS fan records it)

I don't know about anywhere else, but Eurosport are providing streams of the World Feed coverage on the Player, and are also showing LIVE coverage of the Frees on their linear channels.

:cheer:   :party2: :points:

Glad to hear Maria's doing Univerisade! I really like her programs this season - especially her SP with the rainbow dress and look forward to seeing her skating again, I hope she does well!

Not sure if I'll be able to see it live with the time difference and all, but fingers crossed!

In view of Maria's upcoming performance at the Winter Universiade I've decided to update her OP. I've added all the information since 2017/18 GPF (results and some videos). Enjoy.

BTW, good luck on Friday. I hope in her probably last event (?) this season she'll have two clean programs and leave the ice happy and satisifed.

She'll likely get at least one GP next season based on her WR, so I don't see why she should quit now.

She just had a bad season this year as many do. Last year she did pretty well I think. I do hope she fixes her under-rotations and that her 3-3 often becomes a 3-2. Once you lose the tech content consistently, the PCS goes down too. I really liked her high energy SP this time. I hope the off-season goes well and she can fix her tech content.

Pre-Universiade interview

“I'm not going to finish my career” (google translated)

“We arrived on Monday, already accustomed to Krasnoyarsk. I like everything here very much, the organization is excellent, the ice is wonderful, light, good. We start on Friday. We practiced yesterday in the training arena, today at the main. Everything is generally good, combat readiness. To begin with, it was necessary to get comfortable in the situation, to enter into a competitive rhythm. Laminate the program, make the elements.

For me, every start is very important, I approach each competition very responsibly. The Universiade is the Olympic Games among students. Of course, they are important. I want to show myself, do everything that I can. I think the audience will see everything at competitions.

I was told to prepare well before the start of the competition, they said: "Be in shape." List of exhibitors announced recently. The Universiade is an important competition for me, like any other. They are finishing this season, but not the last one for sure. Of course, the season was not so successful, but I'm not going to finish. First of all, I want to prove to myself that I can, that everything will work out for me. I came here to prove to everyone that I can.

There is a good level of rivals. In figure skating there is generally no such thing as weak athletes performing, everyone skates well and the question is who has the nerves. Who will come out and cleanly rolls his program. Of course, athletes are different, girls from exotic countries who came to the Universiade love figure skating, they like what they do. Nobody forces them, Respect them, because they understand that they can not compete at the proper level. But still continue. Specifically, I have not studied the lists, I can not share anyone. We have an unpredictable sport, you can simply skate your program and immediately be among the contenders for the medals. We can not say who cleanly rolls, who does not. I go out and do my job. See what rivals are doing? It needs to be done

Analysis of falls in training? There is always something to analyze, but far-reaching conclusions from training are not. Competitions are a bit different, with this I am fine. We are analyzing everything with the coach, working. And the fact that from the stands someone is talking about mistakes, let's not focus on the fans. At least I have not heard anything.”

New interview (long), google translated:

Sotskova: I want to forget this season and start from scratch
Russian figure skater - about "zeroing" and the struggle for a new self

We met with Masha Sotskova not at the best time for her. Not a single pedestal at the Grand Prix stages, a place in the second ten at the Russian Championship, the seventh line at the Universiade. And this is after two encouraging seasons at an adult level.

The 18-year-old figure skater herself calls the outgoing season a failure. Accompany him with pain, but without regret. All of it is aimed at the future. Mentally Masha is already there. She has to struggle with her own body and search for a new self. It sounds inspiring, if you do not know how much labor will be spent on it.

Sotskova, as he says, is ready. And I really want her to succeed. So that happened, we fix the existing state of affairs.

- After the Olympic Games, your results leave much to be desired.
- There is an emotional downturn. For two years I kept at a certain level - it was impossible to give up slack. Apparently, during this time fatigue has accumulated, not only physical but also emotional. Therefore, there are such failures.

- Maybe it would be worth to miss the season?

- There was no such thing in our thoughts, because we worked, set up programs. New ambitions appeared, desires and hopes. But the physical and emotional state did not allow to embody all our plans.

- All the fault of fatigue?
- The body over the past two seasons has worn out, let's say. Now you need to recover and start all over again. Sport, first of all, is overcoming oneself. At some moments you need to step over yourself. Nobody said it was easy. There is no way that went out, skated, and everything is fine. This is a huge physical and emotional stress. But nobody cares if it hurts you. You will not come to the judges and you will not tell, my leg hurts, could you take this into account when scoring points (smiles).

- And if suddenly the coaching staff says to skip the season, will you listen?
“I'm sure they won't say that.” The human body is so arranged that on stress, on adrenaline can produce such a result that an athlete does not show even in training. It also depends on the internal state, on how a person is ready. Or not ready. This season I was not ready. But I feel the strength to fight, to prepare further and fight. I want and I will.

- Do your ambitions match reality? Competition in women's single skating is now extremely high.
- She has always been insanely high, there is nothing new here. We have always had a large stock of girls in the country, and in the world too. Japanese and American women are very strong. The point here is not in competition, but in gathering oneself and properly adjusting it.

- Not yet.
- This season is closed. Everything. I want to quickly forget about it. Moving on. Will be working.

- Is there any clarity on the next season? Any ideas, preparations for the upcoming starts?
- Not yet. Everything has been invested in this season. We will search for music with coaches, think over programs and styles. Still ahead.

- How do you plan to relax?
- Take a short pause. And then, as I have already said, we will deal with the coaching staff for the next season. Because there is a lot of work, but not so much time as it seems. Now I need time to completely let go and forget this season. And to start from scratch. I want to turn the page and go on the ice updated.

- New man?
- Yes, this is the only way out. Reset and go out with renewed vigor and desire. You just need to understand that everything has to start over.

- And forget about the old Maria Sotskova?
- No, I'm not going to change the name or make plastic (laughs). I will be the same person, the same athlete. I just want to start everything from the beginning in terms of physical condition in order to nullify my body. Revise the same technique to reach the start. So I have to prepare myself for the fact that there is only one way. There is no going back.

- Who will help in this way?
- I think the family and the coaching staff is enough for me to overcome myself.

- By the help of other people will not apply?
- Many specialists work with me already.

- And a psychologist?
- Yes, not without it.

- This season you are away from the usual classics. Is there an understanding of whether the change has come to you or will you have to abandon the new style?
- I still do not know what I would like to show. I understand that the classic gives me better, probably, even more I go. But two programs. You can somehow combine. One number to make a classic, but somewhere to find a new image and try yourself in something new. But not yet decided and decided what specifically would like to do.

- You study in GITIS. How much knowledge gained there helps you to open up on the ice? And how do you manage to combine study with professional sports?
- Yes, studying at GITIS is a titanic work. And who said it would be easy? I chose this path myself, I wanted to study there myself. It really helps. Because I learn something new, I put something new. It’s not like we came to the Higher School of Economics to study mathematics. Theater is also an art, and it is interconnected with figure skating.

- Learning takes a lot of time?
- Of course, but not at the expense of training. I try to combine and keep up with everything. So far I have been doing this.

- What grades do you study?
- I closed the first session, passed all the items. I understand that each item is useful for me and interesting. The same ballet. Or art that I like so much that I enjoy doing it. Of course, from this and performance is good. At school, when I came to a physics or chemistry class, I understood that it would never be useful to me in life, and I thought: “Why do I spend my time on it when I can do what I need?”. And at the institute there is already a profile division and subjects that I like insanely.

- How did you decide to enter GITIS?
- For any teenager, the 11th grade is a difficult life choice. Shakes from side to side. One time wanted to medical, there was such an idea. I thought to enter the same Higher School of Economics. Thoughts were different. But in sports just did not want.

- Why?
- I gave myself a setup like this: “Anywhere, but not in sports”. I did not lay a soul. Then I learned that there is a choreographer department in GITIS. I realized that I want to go there. In the summer, she diligently prepared for exams, as there was a big competition. But I'm glad I managed to do.

- Coach you do not see yourself?
- I am studying now as a choreographer. In general, the director takes part in the training process. He just does not appear on the ice every day. Comes, puts the program, hones the elements. I already had a similar experience. I put the program on a little girl, I really liked it. It must have inspired me. Perhaps I can imagine myself as a choreographer in the future. But the coach ... This is a high responsibility, hard labor. I'm not sure I want to be a coach in the classic manifestation. We'll see. I never guess, you do not know how life will turn. Maybe one day it dawns on me that I am a coach.

- Why so much wisdom in words?
- My mother is a lover of psychological literature. Previously, she rejected psychology, thought: “Why? What it is?". Now carried away. Yes, and mom conveys a lot of life experience. In principle, all the people who surround me have tremendous life experience. Both coaches and my family. They contribute to my development. And, of course, I read a lot of literature, I endure something of my own.

- For example?
- In our family there is such a phrase: “Everything that is done is all for the best.” Or: "God does not give us those tests that we could not survive." This is actually the case. Because "everything that does not kill us makes us stronger." I feel that the experience that I have learned from this season will help me in the future.

- What is happening in figure skating now? Feuds, clashes, undercover games. What is it done for?
- That's life. Everywhere so, not only in figure skating. It also happens in other sports. And what do you mean by "quarrels"?

- The division of the world of figure skating into two camps. Someone stands for Elizabeth Tuktamysheva, and someone took the side of Evgenia Medvedeva.
- All the girls were worthy of a trip to the World Cup - both Lisa and Zhenya. The coaching council made its decision. It is final and not appealable. Lisa, of course, offended. But she is a strong girl, she can handle it. You can discuss it, say who is right and who is wrong. But the solution is, and nothing will change. This is a sport. This situation just needs to go through and move on.

- In your opinion, is the decision fair?
- I will not comment. All girls are worthy. This media grab any opportunity to inflate an elephant from a fly. We also make such a thing out of every decision that you grab your head. People naturally join the discussion. Begin to comment, divided into camps. Well, figure skating is the same show business where everyone discusses everything. But in another way it would be boring and uninteresting. There are always people who are ready to express their opinions. So that's fine.

- Do you read the press?
- Yes of course. First of all, about yourself.

- How do you perceive criticism?
- It is very much. Some justified, some - no. Many, as we call them, sofa critics. What can I say? Sometimes I get upset. But never offended. Once discussed, it means interesting, and this is not bad. If they hadn’t discussed it, then one could be offended. So the person is uninteresting (smiles). And so - you can note some comments, make something positive for yourself. Some things better to turn over and do not pay attention. Nerve cells do not regenerate. You can go crazy like that.

What is written on the Internet, I do not perceive. To the opinion of people whose opinion is important to me, I listen. They want to help, make me better. I don’t say that such criticism is normal, I get upset, of course, but I leave it on my subcortex and work on it.

- When Tatiana Tarasova criticizes, are you also upset?
- I respect her opinion very much, I always listen. Her words are important to me. What she tells me is the way to go and what to do.

- You are one of the leading figure skaters in your group. Feel responsible?
- Is always. Going out on the ice, I represent not only the coaches and the team, but also Russia. Great responsibility, I want to show good results. And to prove that I am not just in the team.

- Feel the competition in your team?
- Yes of course. In the group we have competition. But I can say for myself: during training, I disconnect from what is happening around. If I waste energy, there will be no strength left for work and performances. Of course, when I see someone doing new cascades or rolling a program cleanly, it only gets me excited. I would like to do the same, according to the principle “faster-higher-stronger”. But, in general, I am guided by global competition. I watch competitions in which I don’t take part, note the details, watch how the competitors perform some elements.

- In the group at Eteri Tutberidze, if one jumped three jumps in a row, then the next - five, and the next - seven-nine. And so - in increasing order.
- This is definitely not. We do not have a goal to be killed in training to prove something to someone. Of course, we work, we plow. But all perform their own installation and go to their goals. There is no such principle that everything is aimed only at competition.

- You said that you are looking at your rivals. They jump triple axel and quadruple jumps.
- If I bring my body in condition that will allow the same quadruple Salchow or Rittberger to be performed, I think, for me, nothing is impossible. I would really like to try. But before that, I must put myself in order mentally and physically. There is a lot to work on.

- What role does age play in this case?
- None. The only thing with age is more responsibility. The person is simply more aware. Being small, you go out on the ice and show that you have trained. It seems to be trained. Itself "shot" everything, as if by thumb. And with age you already understand where you are, what responsibility you have, how you experience all this. That's why that's the way it happens. The basis of the same axel, which is performed by Liza Tuktamyshev and Rika Kihira, is physical fitness. Lisa, like Rika, is physically fit. It's not about age. Just Liza was able to understand the head, how this jump jumps. Therefore enters into it and does.

- Does fear matter?

- Yes of course. Everything depends on the head

- What needs to be done to overcome it?
- 100 percent aware of how to perform this element. First, this element is worked out on the floor, with safety net. Only when you feel what you are doing can you make this element on the ice.

- What happens to the body when you perform several jumps in a row?
- This is a matter of habit. I am in sports since three years. That is, I am engaged in figure skating for 15 years. And I don’t wonder how many jumps in a row to do. The only thing now is that the body does not quite listen to me, it rejects what I am doing. Forces put more, but still this is not enough. Apparently, I am experiencing a turning point. You need to strain three times more and do more work to be in the same condition that I was in last year. Need to survive and wait.

- There are no concerns that due to “live through and wait out” they will write you off?
- All sorts of different thoughts climb into my head, without this nowhere. But the most important thing is to feel the strength and desire to continue. Because as if I will not feel these moments, then is there any sense to go with the flow? At the moment, not all my ambitions have been realized, I have something to show. I am ready to work and really want it. You just need to treat yourself in a new way, because I have changed. My body has become different. Therefore, you need to accept these changes and start all over again.

- Has the new refereeing system changed anything for you personally?
- It did not affect me, given my failed season. If I had performed at the proper level, I could have somehow appreciated it. Of course, the new system has exacerbated my position this year. But I myself am to blame.

- Does it violate the “faster-higher-stronger” principle?
- It is more for stability stands. If I were a spectator, I would be interested, for example, in men's skating to look at all fours, as was the case last year. It does not matter whether it worked or not. There was a real fight. All overcame themselves. And now - everyone simplifies the content. But not for me to judge. In this case, everyone chooses his path.
