Fell on his opening 4t. Did a nice 4t2t. No 3A. Other than the 4t, everything good.

Nathan "back then" was this cute little kid who knocked our socks off with his technical ability. But now he must be judged without the cuteness factor. He is still a great technician (I didn't watch him practice so I don't know what happened to the 3A) but the simple costumes (black pants white shirts) and not grabbing us and pulling us into the performance the way Jason Brown does, left me impressed with his jumps....not the choreography or projection. He is not alone in this. Many good skaters are good at one and not the other....the great skaters are good at both.
When I was watching Carly I was thinking how neat it would be to see she and Gracie at Nats together...but alas, it was not to be for this year. She sat in front of our gang and watch the rest of the ladies and the mens, and watching and listening to her interacting with her friends, she seems like a nice person...hope the pic I took of her watching Caroline spin turned out...
You WILL enjoy nats!
Chris

Thanks for the report, Chris! That is interesting your feeling re: Nathan's projection to the audience. I do remember while I was in awe of Nathan's ability, it was Jordan Moeller who stood out to me performance wise when I watched the juniors in Boston.

I am sad Carly did not make it; I enjoyed her program a lot.

Now wondering if I should go to Nationals after all...

I thought Chen looked really good. No 3a, but his regular triples were back to being sharp and crisp like we are used to seeing. The 4t-2t, 3lz-2lo-2lo, and 3f-3t combos in his FS were 1st rate. He's been doing 3a since he was 13 so I am not too worried yet. He is 15 and just starting to shoot up, I think he will bring the 3a back in time. Really impressed that he has the 4t already though! And that he managed to land it at a big pressure event like this. I know some people worry about him with the jumps being small but I still think he has a really great future!

Great skate for Mariah Bell at mids! Hoping she can do well at Nationals this year and get a GP assignment next season. Too bad for Barbie Long, she hasn't been skating great recently and was not at her best at this competition, but missing out by 0.05 of a point has got to be tough. She had a rough fall last year too but then was way better at Nationals. I wonder if she'll continue competing. Carly Gold skated pretty well in the FS I thought. I figured she probably wouldn't make it to Nationals but 83 is not a bad score and it looks like she is improving. She and Gracie are both so pretty.

The point of worrying over young skaters trying difficult jumps so soon is that they are still too young, their bodies haven't developed fully yet so who knows if those jumps might harm their bodies latter in their careers. And they are still small that's why their jumps being small I can understand.
Did Joshua Farrish have 3A and 3-3 when he was just a novice IIRC?

Joshua Farris did do a 3-3 (3Z-3T) in his Novice FS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaVK0ssL2Tg

He started landing the 3A in juniors the following year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSKlicRSEd8#t=1m25s

Thank you. He was so promising back then. A true talent. I wonder when did Joshua have a quad. 15 years old as well? What a pity that he is injured so often. Nathan is another case, though. He's Asian so maybe he has reached his height already? Or not? How tall is Nathan now I am curious.

I think he first ratified quad was at 2012 JGP in Lake Placid, so a bit older (16).

ISU bio says he's 5'1" but I think he's taller than that now.

Looked a bit taller than that to me also....the brand new media guide I just bought says he is 5 ft two inches but If you told me he was five three I wouldn't call you out on it...I don't think he is much taller than that. Skates and being out on the ice make people taller...novice skater Ai Setoyama sat next to me and she is tiny....

That means he is still growing. He might be around PChiddy's height when he matures I guess.

Uploaded a rather interesting photo to my account linked in post #21. Todd Sand is bent over reading Karin's sweatshirt from the 1989 Pacific coast Sectionals. His name and his partner's name are on the shirt along with all the other competitors, but he told us that they didn't show up. His partner was injured then. More pics to come.

But I have to agree with CoyoteChris he needs more projection.
His jumps are kinda small really. But he's still small so it doesn't matter. It's just somehow his programs are not really cohesive but it's understandble with that age.

Nathan, Adam, Max, and Jason. I think it will be interesting sitting in the seats at Greensboro watching them all practice and then compare their marks with each other. They are all so different. Mens is my least favorite discipline but this will be interesting.

I do love Nathan's Michael Jackson SP though. Probably my fave SP among all the U.S. men at this point. It's quite different, but Nathan pulls it off well.

I enjoyed this SP so much. Nathan is a really good dancer!
