I hope you will use this thread to tell us about any great up and coming youngsters you see!

Clearly, we need to provide coverage of the series, and it will be in the 2016 Summer Competitions folder

I've become enamoured with Matthew Markell's skating at the Quebec Summer Championships this past weekend. I started to notice that his style appealed to me during the Minto Summer Skate livestream a couple of weeks before, and watching his LP at the QSC in person fully sealed the deal for me. IMHO, his routine was the most beautiful that I saw at the competition, and I was so happy that he managed to win a medal. :cheer: There's a lot that he needs to improve (and he himself has acknowledged this), but I already find his elegance captivating.

I had the pleasure of meeting Matthew after the ceremony, and he's by far the sweetest skater that I've ever encountered. :) A few have been nice to me, while others have been merely polite, but Matt is truly a sweetheart, as sweet as maple syrup. Luckily for me, he thinks I'm a sweet person, too (yes, he did tell me this), and he has permitted me to keep in touch with him.

Yesterday, I had attended the Junior Men's LP at the 2017-2018 Skate Canada Challenge, and the skater who had impressed me the most was Iliya Kovler, the champion of the competition. I've seen him before in a few livestreams earlier this season, but this is the first time his skating made me think, "WOW! This kid is really great!" He was outstanding, and I'm happy that I got the chance to watch this performance in person.

Btw, I only noticed after I had finished filming that there was a slight problem with my camera lens because he doesn't look as sharp and clear as the other skaters/teams that I've recorded. My video is still okay, it just doesn't look quite as nice as my other fancams.

Another skater at the Challenge that I thought was very good was Corey Circelli, the silver medallist of the Junior Men's event. I already liked his artistry before this competition, and it's even more lovely in person. :love2: I only wish I could've seen his "Hallelujah" SP, as I happen to like that program a bit more than his free skate. (ETA: You can watch his flawless SP from the 2017 JGP Riga here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPvctXliJTU)

Matthew Markell, Corey Circelli and Iliya Kovler finished 1st, 2nd and 4th respectively at the 2018 Canadian Nationals, and Kovler was 2nd in the free skate. :cheer2: I've isolated these videos from the archived livestreams.

I actually shed tears of joy over Matt's victory because I had told a friend just after I returned home from the Quebec Summer Championships that if his jumps were more consistent, he'd be the next national junior champion. AND IT HAPPENED!!! :yahoo:

When I met him again at the Challenge, I gave him a small gift and told him that it was a good luck charm for the Canadian Championships, and I like to think that it worked perfectly!

Although Iliya Kovler crumbled in the LP at the JGP Richmond :( , he nonetheless had a great SP :luv17: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyFNMjfxqYw ), where he wholly obliterated his previous Personal Best SP score by over 30 points (72.16 vs. 41.96), and he probably didn't expect that he'd finish in 3rd place in that segment. There were many in the competition thread who had never seen him skate before (until now, TGee and I were probably his sole fans on this forum), and his strong SP performance did garner him some notice. I hope that despite his disappointment with his FS, this competition has showed him that he has the potential to be among the best junior-level men's singles skaters in the world, and he just needs to learn how to handle the pressure (especially that of the hometown crowd) better.

This is what Iliya's James Bond LP looks like when it's clean-ish (this is from the 2018 Minto Summer Skate, and it was my favourite performance from the Junior Men Free Skate): [Dead link]

I apologize for Matthew Markell's gorgeous new SP  being 5 months late  , but I honestly didn't know there were official videos from the 2018 Egna Spring Trophy until now: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6tpf54 He placed 2nd in this segment, and it was his career-best SP performance. 👍 He got injured during practice (a stress fracture, as it turns out), and had to withdraw from the free skate. This is why we haven't seen him during this season's National Summer Series.

Matt's skating is gorgeous. His flexibility, smooth movements and musicality are exceptional in Junior men. And his coaches are doing well in choreographing programs that show this.

I was so sorry to find out that he'd lots a couple of months of training after Egna due to injury. I'd really looked forward to seeing him in the summer series and with JGP assignments.

His artistry is indeed exquisite, not just among juniors, but (in my opinion at least) among most senior-level guys as well. :points:

(y) I adore this new SP more than last season's---it suits him much better, and the choreography does bring out the best of his presentation skills.

Do you by any chance recognize the piano piece? I asked Matt what it was, but he replied that he didn't know. He did tell me that his new free skate is set to "Love Story," though. (I assume he's referring to the film soundtrack, and not a Taylor Swift song, but I could be wrong---he would be more familiar with the latter than the former.)

Me, too. The timing of the injury is really unfortunate because he'll age out of juniors next season, so that means he'll never get the opportunity to compete on the JGP circuit. :(

Corey Circelli achieved Personal Best scores in the SP, FS and total scores at the JGP Gdansk. The YouTube videos of his individual performances are at 29 frames per second, but I found versions which are at 59 fps, so the graphics are smoother.

2019 Corey Circelli JGP Gdansk SP (1080p, 59 fps): https://streamable.com/upmat Squeaky clean performance! :yay:

2019 Corey Circelli JGP Gdansk LP (1080p, 59 fps): https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7ljtqr If it doesn't display in the correct format, click on the upper right hand corner and select "1080p60".

Because I wasn't able to watch the Minto Summer Skate livestream (Skate Ontario didn't archive the footage :frown: ), and Corey withdrew from the LP at North York Summer Skate, this is the first time I've seen his beautiful interpretation of "Moonlight Sonata". :love2: There's room for improvement, of course, but I think this program can be dazzling later in the season.

My belated congratulations to Corey Circelli for winning the 2020 junior national title! 🥇 :dance3: (It was very difficult for me to find the last video, hence my delay in writing this post.)
