Laurence Fournier Beaudry & Nikolaj Soerensen are ice dancers who represent Canada. Fournier-Beaudry was born on July 18, 1992 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, while Soerensen was born on Feb 18, 1989, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Fournier Beaudry and Soerensen represented Denmark until January 2018, but then decided to represent Canada as Fournier Beaudry was unable to obtain Danish citizenship.

They are the 2023 Canadian National champions, the 2024 Four Continents silver medalists, the 2022 NHK Trophy champions and the 2022 GP de France silver medalists. They qualified for the 2022-23 and 2023-2024 GPFs.

The team won the bronze medal at the 2019 Canadian championships. The 2019 season started well for the team. Fournier Beaudry and Soerensen won their first Challenger gold medals at the 2019 Nebelhorn Trophy. They won the overall bronze medal in the 2019-20 Challenger Series!

They also won bronze medals on the senior Grand Prix at 2019 Skate America and 2019 Cup of China, finishing eighth overall on the Senior Grand Prix.

Following Cup of China, Soerensen underwent a cartilage graft and a meniscotomy to repair his knee, which forced the team to miss the 2020 Canadian Championships. The team had been assigned to skate in the world championships for Canada, which was cancelled due to the coronavirus epidemic.

This team caught a lot a people's attention after finishing an impressive 11th at the 2015 worlds, and I confess I didn't actually watch their worlds performances :slink: But when I saw that they needed a fan fest, I decided to watch them on YouTube, and I was very impressed! They have beautiful flow and transitions, and there is just a really pleasing quality about their skating. Considering that Papadakis & Cizeron went from 13th to world champs in a season, they could definitely be a factor next year, with the right vehicle and a couple of great skates! Of all the things I like about this couple, I think my favorite is their musicality, and I bet that's going to play in their favor, but they still have a lot of room for improvement and so much potential. I can't wait to see what they'll do!

I'm glad there's a thread for this team, really like them.
But I'm still curious how team Crone/Sorensen would've looked.

Can I get a round of applause for Doris and her awesome updates? THANK YOU! :cheer2: It takes me almost half an hour just to get the thread up and running with only their ISU bios and some videos of them, so I can only imagine how much effort goes into making updates like these! Very, very much appreciated!

"Five years ago in may 2012 we started our journey together. We decided on a whim to skate together and really hadn't reflected on where this might lead us one day.
Well first thing first. Little over a year into our partnership our skating partnership also became an off the ice in love kind of partnership and we have ever since may 2013 shared all the ups and downs that we have had both on and of the ice.
We are so "lucky" and thankful to be able to do what we love everyday. With the person that we love. And through this passionate hobby that we have turned into our full time career, WE this year accomplished something that we had never wrapped our heads around, QUALIFYING FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES 2018 for the country we proudly represent DENMARK. We did so as the 7th best nation in the world!
Now Laurence is not a Danish citizen, and unfortunately Denmark might be one of the countries in the world with the strictest immigration policy.
With this new goal in our heads we have spent sleepless nights trying to figure out a way to compete at the games anyhow.
In the Olympic charter written in :
CHAPTER 5 (the Olympic Games)
SECTION 2 (participation in the Olympic Games)
RULE 41 (nationality of competitors)
BYE-LAW 4 states.
4. Furthermore, in all cases in which a competitor would be eligible to participate in the Olympic Games, either by representing another country than his or by having the choice as to the country which such competitor intends to represent, the IOC Executive Board may take all decisions of a general or individual nature with regard to issues resulting from nationality, citizenship, domicile or residence of any competitor, including the duration of any waiting period
This rule is rather unclear but from our perspective and after having it looked over by lawyers, it became clear to us that the final word on whether being a citizen of the country you represent is something the IOC (international Olympic committee) has the power to decide.
And this gives us hope. We now appeal to the DANISH OC, and hope that they will work very hard to make this exception a reality by asking the IOC.

Thanks for posting! Hopefully they will find a solution to this problem, it must be really nerve wrecking to have such an uncertain path and to know that what you have trained for your entire life is in the end of bureaucracy. Let's hope they manage to realize their dreams!

I'm glad they are at least trying. Has anyone heard of someone else doing this before and whether or not it was successful?

Have there been cases in team sports (like, teams with way more than two people) where non-citizens still get to represent a country?

I appreciate their plight and I am not against them. I am not sure what the answer is, however, we do have to worry about Pandora's box being opened if they make exceptions. Yes, it is unfair tht each nation has different rules about being citizen and in some cases it seems the gov't may expedite immigration for the sake of the Olympic team and nationalistic glory/pride. Part of what may be a problem depending on your point of view is that most immigration issues are because someone is trying to make the olympics and can't or wouldn't in their nation of orgin or needs a partner from another nation to have a shot. Sure there are some are more about winning ie. Savchenko. So many have the olympic dream; very few get there. Sadly. Still I wish them well.

Thanks, I signed it. Maybe you should open a thread in the General Forum: Figure Skating the Edge for better visibility. It would be such a shame if this talented couple couldn't compete.

It's kind of crazy that I've never checked on this fan fest given how obsessed I've been with Laurence and Nikolaj this season :luv17:. They have two the best programs of the season and they danced them beautifully at Euros :yahoo: The connection between the two of them and the stalkerish intensity that he looks at her with in the free is amazing. It's a shame about the Olympics but I cannot wait until Worlds to see them again :hap93:

Here's an out-there idea: if the Danes won't permit her to compete for Denmark, I wonder if we could see them in the 2022 games if they release him and they compete for Canada instead? Mind you, they're getting pretty much all the support Denmark is able to provide, and if they choose to go for Canada instead, there's a deep dance pool already. Just wondering ... at least if they tried, and they succeed, they can get to the next Olympics.
