Q&A with Alena

Original Post

As the most mature of the Russian ladies currently still competing, I'm surprised Alena Leonova doesn't have her own thread yet! Thought I'd get a jump on compiling some info here.

Alena Leonova (Russian: Алёна Леонова)

Excerpt: Alena Leonova once spearheaded the wave of talented Russian girls when she won the World Junior title in 2009, and was the first Russian lady in eight years to do so. While she went on to claim silver at Worlds in 2012, the following two years were not as successful. She finished 13th at Worlds in 2013, and as a result, did not qualify for the Olympic team.

Is she continuing to compete? I hope so.

I loved her "Chaplin" this past season - one of my favorites and she skated it very well in most of her competitions. Her 3toe-3toe when done well has great height and ice coverage.

Yesterday she tweeted that she is working with a choreographer in Boston...well, she says "taking lessons from," not necessarily that they are working on a program. I'm a fan of Olga Glinka, the regular choreographer for Rukavitsyn's skaters, although I'm kind of over Chaplin (as great as it is), and would like to see something new.

She has 252,000 Twitter followers! Where did they all come from? Liza hasn't even hit 25,000 yet.

A few weeks ago, Mikhail Sharov spent a day with Rukavitsyn's training group. He's the journalist who is always posting videos & photos from Russian competitions. His photos & remarks are here...quite a few are of Alena.

Mixed thoughts on her keeping Chaplin. I love it--probably my favourite ladies SP this year--but it's already been skated to perfection several times. Usually, I want skaters to move on when the program has gotten its ideal performance.

Either way, good luck to Alena next year. Hoping she can improve her FS consistency.

Here's hoping she gets invited to Skate America :agree: I want to see her skate live at least once before she retires!

That'd be great to see her in North America this coming season! I'm not a fan of repeating old programs for consecutive years, but I wouldn't complain if I were to see the Chaplin SP in-person.

Made a few more additions to the OP -- achievements back to 2009ish so far, program info, links to social media (twitter, YouTube channel, official website, Facebook community, etc.)... though not all of these have been updated recently...

Gotta hand it to the mod staff here, these updates take a lot of time and effort!

MOSCOW, May 16 - R-Sport, Andrew Simonenko. Vice-World Champion 2012 in the women's figure skating Russian woman Alena Leonova worked on staging camp in the United States with the famous American choreographer Olga Kinnard, the work was productive, said the agency "F-Sport" Coach figure skater Yevgeny Rukavitsin.
Skaters group Rukavitsin - Leonov, European Championship bronze medalist in 2014, Konstantin Menshov and multiple winner of the Junior Grand Prix Dmitry Aliev - held a gathering in the US in the first half of May . At the gathering were working on the production of programs.
"The programs I'm talking would not want to, but I can tell you that our group choreographer Olga Glinka Leonova invited to work with the famous US choreographer Olga Kinnard, who owns her own studio ballroom dancing - to work on stylistics of rock 'n' roll - told Rukavitsin by phone. - A few hours she spent with Alain on the ice and also a certain time in the room. We liked how was work, it was very helpful. "

"Also in our collection present five-time United States, a three-time bronze medalist of the World Championships in ice dancing Michael Siebert, he paid attention to us in the work. Also helps (Olympic bronze medalist in 1984 in pair skating) Larisa Selezneva and Oleg Makarov. Was very good teamwork ", - concluded the coach.

Love her. The looks, the presence, the artistry, the three beautiful programs of the last season. Poor girl has problems with nerves tho. I'm currently translating her big R-sport interview about the last season, i'm half-way there but i'm very busy, so i don't know when i will finish it.

Thanks Basil! I have added the R-Sport interview & English translation to the OP.

I have also added a link to Alena's VK community, added more competitive results dating back to 2007, and high score videos for the 2008-2009 & 2009-2010 seasons.

Also added links to her Nationals programs for 2015.

So, she kept her last year's SP, which is a good decision because her last season was pretty short. She's not alone in this case. As for the new FS, the first half is very light, then a pretty brief energetic middle part closed with a very lightweight part again. Not very good, in my opinion, too girly for her, she's quite a woman. Her Tango FS was much more impressive.

I agree. I loved her SP from last season and I'm happy that She's keeping it. I am not a fan however, of her new FS. It's so immature for Lady of her caliber. She is gifted performer and I would like to see her skate to something with more depth. I wish she'd look into one of the many Opera's that are available now. In my opinion, She's a Diva and worthy of something with more substance. Save this FP for your exhibition and start over.

Just thought I'd come give Alena a little love after her awesome Free Skate today and second place finish at Nebelhorn! I think her long program suits her really well and she was very charming during it. She also looks very pretty in her costume  Well done Alena! :cheer:
