Watching Nathan's FS last night I was floored. I knew he landed everything but what shocked me was how he performed the program. All season long he has always got into the hip hop breakdown but this time I felt his performance intensity from the first note of the program. And yes, his jumps were amazing too! And I wanted to add that although I don't love the shirt, I do love the new gloves!

Yeah, I thought interviews with Meryl would be longer. That didn't seem like the full version? Btw, Nathan has really become a such a good interviewee. His public speaking/speaking in general has improved so much since the Olympic season, probably more than his skating ;)

From Phil's article:
Arutunian’s pleasure in how brilliantly Chen performed to win a third straight Grand Prix Final gold, especially in a Saturday free skate with exceptional execution of five quadruple jumps, was fading into the past even before the coach left Italy. He wants Chen to be even better with even tougher programs.

“It’s a process, but I think we’re getting there, especially the five quads, which is difficult,” Arutunian said via telephone from Turin. “I’m looking forward to making it even harder.”
Can it go further? Arutunian suggested Chen could up the ante by doing a quad Lutz or quad flip in the second half bonus area of the long program or by returning to a quad loop, which he has tried (and landed cleanly) just once, in a Challenger Series event two years ago.

“I guess we will have to see what Yuzu does with the quad Axel and whatever other quads he throws in,” Chen said. “I think we’re both pushing each other to our limits as it is. It’s an exciting time for both of us.”

"When are you going to leave Yale? Because Raf wants you back this January." ⠀⠀

"I know, he's been telling me *giggles*. It's tough to do that, because with school you... The classes that I'm taking are not sequence classes but it's difficult to stop in the middle of the semester because we have something called like, um, "academic good standing", which means you have to finish a certain number of credits by certain year. ⠀⠀

And I've been told my end of sophomore year I have to finish 8 credits... no, 16 credits total, 4 per a semester... to move on to junior year. And if I don't finish 16 credits by the end of the sophomore year I'm not promoted into junior standing, which means that I won't be able to return to Yale, so I just have to get the credits right now. ⠀

If some way I can sorta squeeze in credits, like summer credits, yeah, that's an option, but we are only allowed like 2 to 4, I don't quite remember the exact number. It'll be really difficult to add 6 credits to finish off the sophomore year. I basically have to stay this semester to finish that all. After that we can see.

I mean I'm allowed one full year without having any restrictions on academic good standing. But beyond, to get 2 years you have to petition to the Yale sport, so that will be a whole another ordeal so I don't know exactly if I wanna do that, we'll see."

Reminder that today is the last day to vote. I'm guessing there's a good chance he'll be nominated for Dec as well.

"Lutz has been pretty good lately, but not always. Flip is consistently more strong than my lutz, so in recent practices I could build my confidence doing a combination from the flip. That being said, you know, I absolutely could try lutz-toe, it depends on how I feel in that period of time. I think lutz has actually been, like you said, a little more solid than the flip, but, I don't know, there's no real reason, I can switch things around. ⠀
I'm really happy that sal happened, like you said again, that's probably the jump that I struggle on the most in practices, I definitely get a little stressed about that. But I actually think putting it in the 2nd half helps me, just so I can relax, and I'm so tired that I don't really focus anymore, I just let my body do what I know it can do."

Yana's asks such good questions. Interesting how putting a jump in when he's exhausted helps him. No overthinking it.

I’m late here, but WOW his performances were beyond amazing. It turns out I was right about his chances at GPF:)

It sounds like he’s undecided about appealing to take leave for 2 years?

You were right! And I wasn't sure, but did suspect he'd be better than people were giving him credit for. He had a nice long break after his GP assignments and quite of bit of time with Raf before the GPF

It sounds like he wants to get his 16 credits, but I'm not exactly sure what he's saying though. lol. Sounds like January doesn't seem like a good time because he has classes that continue from the fall semester for one thing. But I'm not sure if he could get his 16 credits he needs by the spring + summer. If he does he could appeal for 2 years (which he'd obviously get let's be real) but isn't sure if that's what he wants to do. Idk, he's doing well but I think just taking one year off is pretty risky.

Thanks for posting these updates! Nathan is such a humble guy. Win or not. I hope people give him credits he deserves at the end of day.
