Well, the point is to have enough stength for quads and jump something less exhausting in the end. The 4TEu3Lz combo is impossible because of the outside edge on the lutz. Only salchow or flip can be added, and they are cheaper. Besides, GOE points in jump combos are based on a more expensive jump regadless of their order.

My bad I misunderstood some of the commentary.

I still believe there is no incentive to show a 4-4 if you can achieve the same BV with easier combinations.

I feel like he’s sick like half of the times he competes? Wonder if he gets flu shots?

Hope he feels better soon! It does seem like he’s sick (or recovering from being sick) most of the time he competes, these past two seasons. He doesn’t need to attempt his maximum at Nationals, so he should take it (relatively, slightly) easier.

Flu shots will only protect you from the flu, and only the most common type(s) in a given season, so you can still catch some other variety. It won't prevent you from catching a cold, which granted, oftentimes isn't as weakening as an actual flu, but you can still end up with a nasty fever and a bad case of pneumonia, angina, bronchitis or whatnot, which can take several weeks to recover from properly, never mind the effect it has on stamina (and of course, overdoing it too early can be dangerous and life-threatening, even when it's 'just' a runny nose' and a persistent sore throat).

Nathan would need to stay away from potentially contagious people, make sure he's not breathing in dry and/or cold air and give his body enough rest to recover from his taxing training regimen, to minimise his risk of getting sick. But that of course is impossible as a skater, who's also a full-time student who spends a lot of time being around peers or at ice rinks.

It does seem like he is always sick - particularly at Nationals! Poor guy. I'm actually relieved though that he's going to be less ambitious here. It's not necessary to do all his quads here and it will make me stress a little less during his programs!

And he’s coming off a two-week bout with the flu.

Between the illness and limited training time, Chen said he doesn’t plan to perform quad toe loop or quad Lutz jumps in Greensboro.

“The last few weeks, I’ve been a little under the weather,” Chen said. “So I’m really just trying to get my health back to 100 percent. That being said, trying to push technique isn’t my goal here. It’s to maintain my body, maintain my health and try to prepare myself for the second half of the (international) season.”

However, the part they mentioned taking out 4Lz and 4T looks like misunderstood what Nathan said

According to Hersh’s tweet, “ he may leave the quad Lutz out of his programs.”

leaving out the 4T makes no sense. Yeah, I'm sure that's a misunderstanding.

Anyway, from the sounds of it he's better now. It's just that he didn't get to train much. There's not a lot of need to go full out for nationals anyway.

Yeah, he meant he wouldn't attempt 4Lo.

Trying a quadruple loop jump is out of the question, he told reporters during a conference call Friday, and he’s not sure he will attempt a quadruple lutz. “Right now, I’m just trying to build my stamina, build my strength, day by day,” said Chen, who has brilliantly juggled his skating with his studies as a sophomore statistics and data science major at Yale.

Thanks sheetz. He still sounds very sick to me:(. Hopefully he would be fine before he travels to Greensboro.

I am little confused, did he say he wouldn’t probably go back to see Raf in person before worlds? But Yale spring break starts on March 6th, and ends March 22nd. He has about 10 days to get ready. Maybe he plans to go to Gadbois? Yale calendar has both midterm and Spring break starts on March 6th.

Flu season, constant traveling, weakened immune system at the end of the semester and all GP events. Poor boi put too much pressure on his body. I am relieved in the sense he would not pursue some aggressive content, like what he did at WTT. It would still be two great programs to watch.

He was sick a few weeks ago so I assume he's on the road to recovery by now. The pic he took with a fan when he was sick was from Jan 3.

It probably makes more sense for Raf to fly out to Yale and work with him there than for Nathan to fly out to LA and then back to Montreal for Worlds. If Raf flew out to Yale on Mar 6 he could work w/ Nathan for a week and before meeting up with the rest of his skaters in Montreal.

ETA: Some more about Nathan from the person who recently interviewed him for the Japanese publication.
https://bunshun.jp/articles/-/26941

In addition to mostly unimportant stuff (his naturally curly hair and fast speech) Nathan said his current plan is to compete until the Beijing Olympics. He wants to study medicine so it's too hard to combine that with skating.

dsntedge clarified some parts of Nathan's interview.

I went ahead and purchased the remainder of the interview and here's basically what he said.

--It'll be great if he wins the Olympics but it's not absolutely essential. He just wants to skate 2 programs he can proud to leave behind.
--He's not 100% sure he wants to retire after Beijing and that he may still wish to continue. He will decide at the time.
--Other champions have told him that after retiring they didn't know what to do and suffered from depression. Therefore he wants to prepare as much as he can for his post-competitive career.

Article: It’s Nathan Chen’s time at nationals for a feat 32 years in the making
Chen seeks a fourth straight national title in Greensboro, N.C. He would be the seventh man to do so since World War II. Five of the previous six won Olympic titles — Dick Button, Hayes Jenkins, David Jenkins, Scott Hamilton and, most recently, Brian Boitano from 1985-88.

Boitano remembered the first time he met Chen. He and Kristi Yamaguchi were compelled to leave their seats to find the teeny, tiny wunderkind who performed that program to the 2008 DreamWorks film.

“He was taking off his skates, and he probably came up to our waist,” Boitano said. “We knew when we saw him back then that he was going to be something special. He was really quiet. He’s still very quiet.”
