Haha yeah the curl drop. I noticed that as well. I was slightly nervous because his practices are so perfect. I remember last season I think it was GP france he had great practices and then popped his combo in the SP.

And now that I think about it, he didn't do a clean SP until nationals last year. So he's doing well. And rewatching it, he was off his music towards the end. I wonder if that caused the spin issue and the rushing.

Article: Nathan Chen hopes to hip hop his way to Skate America crown
“Originally, she just said Rocketman and I said, ‘Oh yeah, that’s fine,’” Chen said. “Then she threw in the hip hop. I said, ‘Wait a minute.’ She didn’t tell me until I got there and she played the music.”

“I figured it would be fine,” he added. “My issue was telling [coach] Raf [Arutunian]. I didn’t tell him until I got back to California, but when I did tell him he was actually totally on board with it.”

Whatever concerns the coach may have had vanished when Chen showed him the steps, created with Dubreuil’s collaborator Samuel Chouinard.

“First of all, it looks like it’s professionally done and he executes it professionally,” Arutunian said. “I was watching ice dance last year and many of couples (were) doing hip hop dancing, and I think he would be one of the best at it. If you do something, you should do well, and he is doing it so professionally, you cannot feel he has blades on. He manipulates his feet like he is in shoes.”

I didn't get the impression that he was confident, to me he seemed a bit nervous actually, when he took the ice and during the first part of La Boheme. Just something about his body language and the way that he skated the intro gave me that feeling.

And now that I think about it, he didn't do a clean SP until nationals last year. So he's doing well. And rewatching it, he was off his music towards the end. I wonder if that caused the spin issue and the rushing.

Yeah that made me very sad, because it's really a beautiful program, but it would have more of an impact if he wasn't trying to catch up with the music. I think he should (or could :p) shorten the transitions in-between the 3A and the entry into his camel spin. Because that spin took too long, so he finished too late and was behind the music from then on. Add to that the need to tack that +3T onto his 4T, and he lost some more seconds going into his step sequence.

ETA: So did Nathan think Raf would be too old-fashioned to accept hip hop moves in a skating program?

ETA 2:
Also praying hard that he’ll keep his counter entry into the 3A in the SP too!!

Nope... outside mohawk it is...

Yeah, I noticed he was way off when he was supposed to get on his knees but rushed and finished it on time, which I guess comes across to the judges better than finishing after the music. And I agree, he looked a little nervous! So much screaming and banners lol. And he was doing some fantastic spins in practice, so it was just a weird mistake.

That being said, his interpretation continues to improve with every skate and it is a beautiful program. I like how he ends the program now as well. It's very fitting.

Yes, there were some flaws, but it’s a lovely program that he skates so expressively. And I think it’s 10 points more than he got a year ago at Skate America, so it’s a good starting point from which to build. I’m wondering if he’s slightly sick. It seems like he was sniffling a bit.

I know! :luv17:
Also, can I have Nadia's job and be Nathan's 'face sweat wiper'? I'll do it for free even!

Yeah, I noticed he was way off when he was supposed to get on his knees but rushed and finished it on time...

Yeah, I noticed that too, he even had some 1-2 seconds 'to spare' in the end, when he finished his last spin and before getting into the final pose. I was like how'd that happen now?

And I agree, he looked a little nervous! So much screaming and banners lol.

Exactly. I actually felt quite uneasy myself when he was greeted with those loud cheers, because it just hit me in that moment how much pressure he must feel.

Yeah, but all in all, there was not a single other skater or program today, that I enjoyed nearly as much as Nathan and La Boheme... even when flawed, he's still one of the few skaters I find truly aesthetically pleasing, so what can you do :drama:. And I don't know what it is, but choreo never looks tacky or hackneyed on him, something that usually bothers me a lot in figure skating programs.

This is a pretty tough field and for that reason I suspect many of the skaters were a bit nervous. Lots of uncharacteristic mistakes throughout.

Ok, so what exactly is Nadia doing with those tissues, after she wiped the sweat of Nathan's face with them?
If I get the job, I will behave, I promise!

The KnC was funny in general, Raf being secretive again, lowering his voice and trying to talk to a spot behind Nathan's back always cracks me up!
And lol @ Nathan, telling Nadia (and the rest of the viewers) about his snot problems, and in such a vivid manner at that. This is the kind of scoop I tune in for!

And Nathan sweetie, there’s such a thing called gloves, just wear those until it’s your turn to go on the ice, instead of allowing your hands to cool down so much while you’re waiting. All that rubbing the hands and blowing into them will be unnecessary. ;)

Other skaters had the advantage of competing with their SP before today. Nathan came in with a new SP that he had never performed with multiple quads before. Plus it was the first time he attempted a 4Lz+3T since 2017. It was a lot, but he handled himself well.

I suspect he was a bit under the weather too.
He only had one quad in SP last year’s SP, and it was UR with an unclear edge call.

I'm sure he's fine, not every sniffle is a sign of an infection, especially not in a cold environment such as an ice rink. Trust me, many people get a runny nose from physical exertion, and even more so in the cold. ;)

I’m still convincend he just 'suffered' from some nerves and probably not having skated that layout as often yet. Remember, he got his programs quite late again this summer and was touring almost non-stop and then it was back to school again. Plus, I kinda get the sense that he’s been holding back on the 4Lz since the olympic season, not practicing it as often anymore.

I was kinda annoyed by that actually, the camera work was rather bad there, I wanted to see all of it! Also with Nemesis, he strikes those really cool looking poses during the intro, and those would also always get cut away when they zoomed in too much.

The setup is that Nora goes to the rink to get a skating lesson from one of the kids. They pick Kimito, who says he wants to be a skater like Nathan Chen. First Nathan is disguised as a sound man. Then he becomes a fat guy which causes a lot of excitement when he speeds past everyone. Then finally he puts on a wig to become Nora for the final reveal. Kimito's reaction: "Oh my gosh!"
