Wow, just wow. I did not expect such a performance from him, everything looked so smooth and he was so on point and on the music, even his jumps and the spreadeagle, I'm really, really impressed! Especially taking into account how early in the season it is.
And I really enjoyed his interpretation of the different music tracks.

Also, what happened to his 3As, what kind of sorcery is this?!
They're still not the highest or cover lots of distance, but they looked so effortless! I've never seen such easy looking 3As from him, and two of those in one program at that!
And omg, he's even landing the one before his StSq starts right on the beat of the music (did the same at JO and in practice too), when has he ever managed to do that?
And even his landings were great, usually he has a tendency to land with his left hip kind of opening up too much and his left leg 'escaping' him, but this time both landing positions were great.

I wonder why he sometimes seems to go through phases where he pops his 'comfy quad' 4T into a double... the same thing used to happen early in the olympic season.

Looks like he's struggling to get the rhythm for the +1Eu+3F right, I assume his muscle memory is still set on adding the +3S.

I've noticed these past 2-3 days, that he seems to get awfully close to the boards when gaining speed into his jumps. Is the rink in Las Vegas smaller than usual, or has Nathan gotten faster or something? I can't say if it was the same or not for other skaters, because I don't follow them this closely.

Carpet got him again https://twitter.com/nwcgold2019/status/1185713530063880193

And he did so well! People will whine about his scores, but he's one of the only men who consistently who put out good and clean/most clean FS with high tech content. He will continue to get rewarded for that. And he sold the heck out of the whole program, especially the end.

Another V on his spin though. :dev2:

Good Vincent is not on the podium.

That is too funny!
The carpet must be a Yuzu fan. :p

He got all 5's and one 4 for his ChSq1 :hap93:

I saw that too, so funny! I mean, how could they not, the crowd went so wild, I couldn't hear the music anymore.
(also in general, the crowd was so great and supportive to all the skaters, what a nice, welcoming atmosphere!).

Yeah but aside from sometimes losing levels and such early in the season, we should really appreciate the quality of his spins for a moment here. This is something that I once again noticed at this competition, compared to some of the other men.

I know he's not above average flexible and he doesn't have the most impressive or creative positions, but his spins always look neat and are well-centered and controlled.
Sure, he could point his toes more on his camel, but his skating leg is not bent (BIG pet peeve of mine!) not even during the catchfoot position, the way it is for what feels like 95 % of all male skaters (and many female ones as well). :luv17:

And even though he doesn't spin super fast, he never has wonky looking spins or really slow and laborious ones the way some of the other men do (Dima for instance seems to be really sloppy sometimes? looked that way to me here).

I feel that skaters who focus a lot on difficult jumps sometimes have a tendency to neglect either step sequences or spins (or both), but Nathan is doing really well with maintaining a certain quality level of execution on all of his technical elements.

Press conference quotes:

Chen: I'm pretty happy with the performance today. It's the first Grand Prix of the season. There are a lot of things to improve on.
Chen: I did a single flip at Japan Open and I did a double flip here, so I kind of improved in some ways. [laughter]
Chen: My mother made this costume for me; we just went into a fabric store and was like, this is pretty cool fabric. This isn't going to be the ultimate costume of the season.

I feel I should know this but what does the "v" mean for the spin?

Anyway, Congrats Nathan - great job here at Skate America! He just continues to amaze me!

And lol that his mother made his costume!! Somehow I find that so endearing!!

I just love how... easygoing and no-fussy he is!
He has such a simple and informal approach lol, very likeable. My parents have also always been super thrifty and very much into building and crafting things yourself, so I can totally relate, but then again, I was never a two-time world champ competing on the world stage in my DIY costume...

I feel I should know this but what does the "v" mean for the spin?

That depends. From ISU Communication No. 2254:

- For flying spins (with no change of foot and only one position) of both Short Program and Free Skating the following is required: a clear visible jump. The sign “V” indicates that this requirement is not fulfilled.

- All spins with change of foot must have 3 revolutions on each foot. In Short Program, if this requirement is not fulfilled, the spin will get “No Value”. In Free Skating the sign “V” indicates that this requirement is not fulfilled.

- Spin in one position with change of foot must have 2 revolutions in basic position on each foot. In Short Program, if this requirement is not fulfilled, the spin will get “No Value”. In Free Skating the sign “V” indicates that this requirement is not fulfilled.

ETA: I assume he did not hold one of his basic positions for long enough, for instance, maybe he was not low enough for the whole duration of his sit position, so they did not count all of his revolutions, or he simply did not do enough revolutions even though the position was okay to be counted.

ETA 2:

- The base values of spin combinations with only 2 basic positions (at least 2 revolutions in each of these positions) are also listed in the SOV table.

^
those are also marked with a 'V', and this is what happened to Nathan here, since his sit was not counted, so he ended up only having 2 basic positions in his final combo spin.

I think my favorite moment in the program is when he goes into the 3A with what I call the Jeremy Abbott 3A entry and lands it right on the crescendo of the music. It literally makes my heart soar. His 3A has truly come such a long way. I think I need a moment :sad21:

I agree. That’s a great moment. It’s amazing how far his 3A has come! And his program overall has improved so much in the short time since JO. It must so difficult to do school and 3 competitions in a row (JO, SA and IDF) with only a 2-week break in between each. I’m so impressed.
