Georgian figure skater Elene Gedevanishvili was born 7 January 1990 in Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, Soviet Union (now Georgia).

I have always really liked Elene, and I know a lot of other people do too. So I couldn't believe it either that she didn't have a Fan Fest! :shocked:

Curiousity was getting the better of me as to how she had been overlooked, so I decided to do a Google search for her name on Golden Skate.

Given how long Elene has been on the circuit, it is not surprising that there were a LOT of results. There are quite a few threads specifically about her, including a few early attempts at Fan Fests from 2007.

I really like Elene, although I'm not sure I've ever seen her skate a clean program...:hopelessness: Her "Artsakh" program from 2006 is one of my favorite ladies' programs ever.

Thanks for all the links, especially to Dorispulaski for augmenting my original post! Inquiry: Does anyone know how to translate into Georgian, and to script it in the Georgian alphabet (which is quite stylish. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgian_scripts to see what I mean) "We love you Elene!". Again, the same idea with others, to make a bilingual banner to hold up at a competition after she performs.

I'm glad Elene continues for yet another year. I was hoping the retirement rumour wasn't true, and it isn't. Looking forward to seeing her at events, and thank you, John King, for starting this thread.

Well, you have to look at the context. Relations between Russia and Georgia were not great at the time.

There were incidents between the 2 countries throughout 2006. At the end of September 2006, four Russians were arrested in Georgia and accused of spying (see this Wikipedia page for more info). A week later, Russia deported a lot of Georgians in retaliation, including Elene's family.

Looking through Elene's results on her tracings.net profile, I see she has never competed at the Cup of Russia. I wonder if this means there are still travel restrictions on her. There again, after the way she and her family were treated, you wouldn't blame her for not wanting to compete in Russia.

I hate it when politics creeps into places it shouldn't. And here we have it creeping into 2 places - into sport, and into family life.

What is on her abdomen in the second pic? That's an odd place for a piercing, but what else could it be...stick-on jewels? Would someone wear those at the beach?

Ah! I hadn't even noticed that (!)

I just took a closer look at the photos, and I think the single photo you are looking at is actually a mirrored image, as the thing you are talking about is on the opposite side to where it is in the photos on the collage.

You can clearly see that this is the case in this bigger version of one of the photos in the collage.

And, to answer your question, I think it is actually a piercing, as it is also in this photo she uploaded on 17th May:

But, I agree – it does seem like a strange place to have a piercing.

Actually, there was a more practical reason for linking to those photos.

When we saw Elene earlier in the season, we were worrying that she had lost too much weight. So, I wanted show you that she has got a more proportioned figure now.
