Spanish figure skater Sonia Lafuente was born on 7 December 1991 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands.

Summary

Sonia Lafuente Martínez was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands, in December 1991.

Although she is only 23, Sonia Lafuente has had a very long competitive career. And a successful one at that. For a start, she has won every edition of the Spanish Championships (at various levels that she has entered)… since 2003!!!

Sonia made her international debut back in October 2003 at the Mereno Cup in Italy, when she won the bronze medal in the Novice competition. The following year, she won her first international gold medal in the same competition.

She graduated to Junior level in the 2005–06 season. She made her Junior Grand Prix debut at the Andorra Cup, where she finished 12[SUP]th[/SUP], and also had a second GP in Gdansk, finishing 30[SUP]th[/SUP]. Later on in the season, she also made her debut in the Junior World Championships, finishing 10[SUP]th[/SUP] in Pre-qualifying, and 30[SUP]th[/SUP] overall.

The following year, during the 2005–06 season, Sonia won the silver medal in the Mexican Junior Grand Prix. This was not only her first ISU medal, but it was also the first medal to be won by a Spaniard at an ISU-run event. She also won the Mereno Cup again, but this time as a Junior, as well as winning the European Youth Olympic Festival.

Over the next 2 seasons, Sonia competed in a mixture of Junior events and Senior events. In 2008, she achieved her second ISU medal (a bronze) at the John Curry Memorial Junior GP event. She also made her European Championships debut, finishing 20[SUP]th[/SUP], and her Senior World Championship debut, finishing 30[SUP]th[/SUP]. In between, she achieved her best finish in the Junior World Championships, finishing 12[SUP]th[/SUP].

The 2009–10 season was to mark the completion of Sonia’s transition from Junior to Senior level. The 2 milestones to take from it are her final Junior Grand Prix appearance (13[SUP]th[/SUP] at the Bosporus Cup) and her Olympic debut (22[SUP]nd[/SUP] in Vancouver).

The 2010–11 season also had a few important milestones in Sonia’s career. Firstly, she got 2 Senior Grand Prix allotments. More significantly, though, for her first time at an international competition (the Golden Spin of Zagreb) she got a clean sweep of first positions. She also got a clean sweep, but this time of second positions, when she won her first senior medal at one of the major championships, a silver at the Winter Universiade in Erzurum.

Apart from the 2013 European Championships (when she got her International PB and her best Europeans placement of 7[SUP]th[/SUP] position), Sonia has been gradually slipping down the pecking order since 2010–11. She has only won 2 international medals in the past 4 seasons – a gold at the 2013 Dragon Trophy, and a bronze at the 2014 Andorra Open.

Plus, in December 2014, for the first time since she turned senior, Sonia did not get a clean sweep of first places in the Spanish Championships. Marta Garcia won the Short Programme. In fact, this is only the second time since the incomplete results of 2003 that Sonia has not got a clean sweep of first places in Nationals (Marta won the Free Skate in the 2008 Junior Nationals).

But, now that Marta has made her presence felt, it may actually turn out to be a good thing for Sonia. Let’s face it, Sonia has never had a genuine contender to her throne before. So, she may have got complacent. But, hopefully, having 2 skaters competing for the single Spanish international slot will drive both girls to improve. And, all being well, this could lead to a resurgence in the career of the girl from the Canary Islands.

Things are looking exciting in the world of Spanish Ladies skating.

Just to let you know that I have now added in Sonia's Competitive History to the Original Post.

Glancing at the names on the results pages as I was looking for Sonia's line, I often found myself thinking "Oh, I haven't heard tell of them for a long time", or "Didn't realise that they were a contemporary of Sonia's", or "Oh, I wonder what they've been doing since they retired". Or, in a lot of cases with the Junior and Novice competitions, "Never heard tell of them!"

It really brought home just how long a career Sonia has had. Like, there were names there that you would not have imagined were still competing at the same time as skaters that are currently on the circuit were coming through the ranks.

Then came the big shock. I was getting rather frustrated that I couldn't find actual scores for Sonia's Novice competitions. And then it suddenly hit me - those competitions were before the New Judging System came in! That was a big wake up call. To realise that, although she is only 23, Sonia has been around so long that she has competed under 6.0!

So, well done to Sonia for having such a long and successful career, and for still being the undisputed top skater in her country!

She has been around so long that thrifty federations have deleted the competition data from their servers. In which case, one can always find some info at

Her Tracings.net entry:
http://tracings.net/lafu-soni.html

This is particularly useful in the case of federations that keep the front page up for some time, but which delete all the files that the front page links to, so that the data is not even on the Way Back Machine. Croatia does this, so that Golden Spin data is better referenced from Tracings.

Here is the Golden Spin 2010 link.
http://www.croskate.hr/media/cms/GSp10A/index.htm

And when you try to go there, no data comes up. So I went to the Wayback Machine:
https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.croskate.hr/media/cms/GSp10A/index.htm

and there are 13 copies. Unfortunately, the actual data pages have not been archived.

In which case, I am happy to find that Melanie Hoyt has the Golden Spin 2010 data here:

http://tracings.net/2010gspin.html

Plus Tracings has pages for competitions which has scores and placings for both SP and LP as well as the Final score. And she includes many national competitions that are rather small, like the Spanish Junior Championships of 2008 at which Sonia competed.
http://tracings.net/2008espn.html

I am sad to report that Melanie has not been updating her files sinces the 2014 Olympics due to grad school commitments, but elated that now that the semester has ended, she is trying to catch up!

Oops! I hadn't checked all the links to see if any were dead!: Thank you for pointing that out that some were. I will be more careful in future.

I have now updated the 4 links that were not working:

2011 Spanish Championships (erm, this one was due to a typing error on the link on Tracings.net ...)
2011 and 2010 Golden Spin
2008 Coupe de Nice

Where I can't find the original results pages, the order of preference I am tending to use for the links is:

  1. the Web Archive of the original page

  2. Tracings.net

  3. Wikipedia

  4. Eiskunstlauf Ecke (a German forum which has a great results archive)

Plus Tracings has pages for competitions which has scores and placings for both SP and LP as well as the Final score. And she includes many national competitions that are rather small, like the Spanish Junior Championships of 2008 at which Sonia competed.

Yeah, Tacings.net is brilliant. It has got to the stage that it is my first stop when looking for results (even before Wikipedia!)

I actually already have the 2008 Spanish Junior Championships in the list – they were held in December 2007, so it's the old mis-nomer story that frequently catches a lot of people (like me!) out.

But, I just spotted that the December 2009 Spanish Championships were missed, so I'll add them in now. (EDIT: done)

And thank you for letting us know why Tracings had not been updated for this season. I had been getting worried that the site had maybe closed down...

I still can't believe that that ultra-detailed site is the work of just one person. I am totally in awe of what she has done!   :points:

All the best for the future Melanie!

Sonia's OP is spectacular!

Awww!!! Thank you for the kind words.

But, it's not that great. Like, I know very little about Sonia, so the Summary was pretty much just a written version of the table of results!

It really is! Thank you so much dorispulaski and CaroLiza_fan for your hard work, it's not easy to find so many videos and information about Sonia.

Don't I know it! :rolleye:

Whenever I make Fan Fests, my aim is to make them a one-stop-shop that people can go to whenever they want to find out information about skaters.

So, I hope I have made a good stab at achieving that with this thread.

Thank you again

wow, how on earth you find Turkish Commentary video! those must be very rare haha and considering its JGP even rarer, well i guess it was because event was at Turkey  great job as always! i sometimes feel lazy to find all the articles and stuff :slink: and it must be even harder when the skater isnt that well known or popular so i kinda envy your dedication

Just wanted to let you know that I have now made the minor alterations to the Original Post of this thread (making the Bio and Social Media lists largely alphabetical, adding in the Personal Best tables).

I had actually edited the original Word files for all my Fan Fests about a month ago, but was delaying applying the changes to the OP's for the Spanish skaters that I have adopted.

You see, as part of these minor alterations, I had decided to add an extra Bio link. But, I had spotted a fundamental flaw with the Bios of Sonia and Marta (amongst other Spanish skaters) on that site. I alerted the site owner, and although it did take a couple of weeks for him to get back to me (which didn't bother me, as I knew he did these things at the end of each month), he thanked me very much for letting him know, and said he would fix it.

I decided to delay posting my alterations to the relevant Fan Fests until he fixed it. But, over 2 weeks have passed since I got the reply, and there is still no sign of it being fixed. So, I have now got fed up and posted the links anyway.

I'll amend them if and when the pages are ever fixed.

I know! It was a surprise to me too when I found those Turkish videos! And, I have to admit, my first thought when I did find them was "matmuh will love this!" ;)

You know, it may have only been because the competition was held in Turkey, you have to applaud TRT for showing that competition. Broadcasters in many other countries wouldn't bother showing figure skating competitions even if they were being held in their own country.

Yeah, searching out the articles can be the least enjoyable part of the process. It takes so long, and it isn't easy to know where to look, or to work out what is the good stuff. Especially when it is not in English! That said, some of the stories you find can be very interesting. So, that can be motivating.

But, I feel guilty about the way you are praising me. The other Fan Fest updaters are far more dedicated than I am.
