Barely 2 ½ months after Nationals, and the new season kicks off this week for Team Cyprus. :cheer:

After a very busy 2018–19 season, it looks like Angelina Kudryavtseva and Ilia Karankevich are going to continue in the same vein this season. The difference is that they have now moved up to Junior level.

This weekend, they will be competing in the NRW Summer Trophy in Dortmund. The Junior Ice Dance SD starts at approximately 17:10 CEST on Saturday 10th August, while the Junior Ice Dance FD starts at approximately 10:30 CEST on Sunday 11th August.

Then, two weeks later, they will be in Courchevel making their Junior Grand Prix debut. The Ice Dance SD starts at 14:15 CEST on Friday 23rd August, while the Ice Dance FD starts at 15:30 CEST on Saturday 24th August.

2019 Junior Ladies Bronze Medallist Giorgia Isabella Sechi will also be in Courchevel for her second ever Junior GP. The Ladies SP starts at 14:00 CEST on Thursday 22nd August, while the Ladies FS starts at 17:10 CEST on Friday 23rd August.

Two weeks after that, Angelina and Ilia will be making their second Junior GP appearance at the Riga Cup. The Ice Dance SD starts at 13:00 CEST on Friday 6th September, while the Ice Dance FD starts at 17:20 CEST on Saturday 7th September.

Joining them in Riga for what will be her Junior GP debut is the 2019 Junior Ladies Champion, Ekaterina Luneva. The Ladies SP starts at 13:00 CEST on Thursday 5th September, while the Ladies FS starts at 16:30 CEST on Friday 6th September.

Although I will be posting further updates, I would like to just take this opportunity to wish all the Cypriot skaters all the best in all their upcoming competitions.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST!!! :cheer:

Just wanted to take this opportunity wish a happy birthday to Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides.

:cheer: ΧΡΌΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΆ ΝΤΑΝΙΈΛΑ!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :hb: :points:

But it is not just any birthday - it is actually Daniella's 18th birthday. So, since it was a milestone birthday, I decided to make a Fan Video to mark it:

https://www.facebook.com/gordon.kells/videos/10162479670230538/

Unfortunately, copyright claims against the music mean that the whole video got blocked when I uploaded it to YouTube, and the music got muted when I uploaded it to Facebook.

So, the best I can come up with is to suggest that you watch the video on the Facebook link above while listening to the music on this video (I don’t know why this and a handful of videos are allowed and mine wasn’t):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLHq8V1V-aw

The story as to how I chose this song is very interesting. All the videos I make use music that involves somebody from Northern Ireland. But, although it is by the most famous singer from Northern Ireland, I didn’t actually know this particular song. Then, about 6 months ago, a friend of mine posted a comment on Twitter saying that she had recently heard this song for the first time in many years, and would love to see somebody skating to it. And since this woman is originally from Cyprus and has taken a bit of a shine to Daniella, I thought it would be appropriate to use it for this video.

All the best to Daniella with whatever the future holds.

As well as Daniella's birthday, there has been some other news from the Cypriot team in the past week.

The first news was confirmation that Angelina Kudriavtseva and Ilia Karankevich will be competing at Junior Worlds. This will be the first time that Cyprus has been represented at an ISU Major Championship. (The only other time Cyprus was represented at a figure skating Major was when Daniella competed at the 2017 EYOF. But that was a European Olympic Committee event rather than an ISU event).

In Ladies singles, a couple of the reigning Cypriot Champions were in action this week.

Sofia Trophy: 12–18 February 2020

Christiana Afxentiou (2019 Cypriot Advanced Novice Ladies Champion) made what I think is her Junior level debut at the Sofia Trophy in Bulgaria. She finished 26th overall, having been 27th out of 27 in the SP, and 26th out of 26 in the FS.

Sofia Trophy Junior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols
Sofia Trophy Junior Ladies FS: Results; Protocols

Tallink Hotels Cup: 13–16 February 2020

Meanwhile, over in Estonia, Ekaterina Luneva (2019 Cypriot Junior Ladies Champion) showed that she is the favourite to retain her National title with a very good showing at the Tallink Hotels Cup. She finished 7th overall out of 19, having been 5th in the SP, and 8th in the FS.

Tallink Hotels Cup Junior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols
Tallink Hotels Cup Junior Ladies FS: Results; Protocols
Tallink Hotels Cup Junior Ladies: Results

Incidentally, Katia achieved the SP minimum TES for Junior Worlds at the Tallink Hotels Cup. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the FS minimum TES. Plus it happened a week after the deadline, so it wouldn’t have counted anyway.

But, it just shows that if she had entered some more competitions since her Junior GP (she only did the GP Of Bratislava in December), she could very well have been going to Tallinn in March to join her Leader team-mates Angelina and Ilia at Junior Worlds. :bang:

Finally, Nationals will be held 02–03 May 2020. This was actually announced a month ago, but I didn’t visit the CSF website until today.

Incidentally, the CSF website has been given a makeover, and is now completely in Greek. So, it looks like I will be relying on Google Translate from now on.

Just wanted to take this opportunity wish a Happy 21st Birthday to Polina Ustinova.

:cheer: С ДНЕМ РОЖДЕНИЯ, ПОЛИНА!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :hb: :points:

Since it was a milestone birthday, I decided to make a Fan Video to mark it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM6LWmZo-vE

As I have explained before, all the videos I make use music that involves somebody from Northern Ireland. But, this time I actually chose somebody very local to me – Tony is from a town which is only 10 miles from my hometown. HOWEVER, he has been performing in Russia for around 25 years, and is actually now based in Moscow. So, I thought it would be an appropriate choice.

The lyrics may seem a bit odd at first, but I wanted to use a song where he sings in Russian.

Anyway, even though Cyprus is currently in lockdown, I hope Polina has an enjoyable day, and that the next year is a good one for her, both on and off the ice!

I hope you are having an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one for you.

As you know from the post directly above this one, it was Polina's birthday last month. Here is a video she posted on TikTok thanking everybody that sent greetings:

https://www.tiktok.com/@polinaust/video/6817561542007983365

She has been posting there regularly over the past few months. Most of her videos are of her miming to snippets of songs or recordings. But about a week after her birthday, she posted this video about her skating career:

https://www.tiktok.com/@polinaust/video/6821188636348910853

I do hope that we will see her competing again sometime in the future.

Nationals were supposed to be held 2 weeks ago but, obviously, they didn't happen because Cyprus was in a strict lockdown at the time. The process of lifting the restrictions started the day after Nationals were due to finish, and the country is about to enter Phase 2.

Unfortunately, there have been no posts on the CSF website since January (before all this kicked off). So, I don't know whether Nationals were cancelled outright, or just postponed.

I'll let you know if and when I find out anything.

I would like to wish a Happy 19th Birthday to Eliana Kalogirou.

Now for an update on Kristina Dubrovskaya.

The past year has been very busy for Kristina. Well, one particular week last July was anyway.

You know how I told you that she was studying at the University Of Surrey in England. Well, she graduated on Wednesday 17th:

Graduation photo

But the big news actually happened the day before her graduation, on Tuesday 16th:

SHE GOT MARRIED!!!

Wedding album 1
Wedding album 2
Photo of the dance
Wedding video

Her husband is also Russian, and is the co-founder of a technology company. With this in mind, it does seem strange that they got married in England. But they're both based in the British Isles, so it does actually make sense.

They went on their honeymoon on the Thursday 18th, and then it was Kristina's 22nd birthday on Sunday 21st.

Honeymoon album 1
Honeymoon album 2
Wedding photoshoot in Bali album

I hope she got a chance to rest after all that! :drama:

Congratulations!!!

Kristina and Konstantin are currently living in London, and a month ago she uploaded a video of them going around the city showing us what London is like during lockdown. And boys but it was surreal to see!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzWhJ_p42nM

Just be warned, it is 17 minutes long. And they are speaking in Russian throughout. But it is definitely worth watching.

She also uploaded a video 10 days ago to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory Day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay_v5_0eVVU

Kristina is sitting in an office chair for all 8m 36s of the video. It starts with her talking at length to camera. I admit, because I don't understand Russian, I started winding through it after about 20 seconds. But, it is a good job I didn't just leave the video because, at 1m 9s, she starts singing. And after this song finishes (at 5m 33s), she starts singing another!

You can really sense the feeling in her voice.

Thank you for doing this, Kristina!

Wasn't sure where else to link this, but I thought if I put it here people who follow Team Cyprus will be sure to see it: a few days ago polymnia_skate on Instagram, who's a skating photographer, published this lovely picture of Giorgia Isabella Sechi in her elegant green frock at JGP Courchevel last year. Nice to see her getting some attention!

But, some good news. We have Cypriot representation at the upcoming Challenger Event, the Budapest Trophy! Two girls who have come up through the American system, Marilena KITROMILIS and Emilea ZINGAS.

I will add posts about them to the start of this thread once I have worked out the best way to do the tables in XenForo. But, in the meantime, here are the basics to get us started:

EDIT (16th August 2021): It's taken me a while, but Marilena and Emilea now have their own OP's at the start of the thread. Since this page was getting rather cluttered, I have just removed the basic OP's from this post and will now direct you to the full OP's instead:

Today was a momentous day for Marilena Kitromilis. Not only did she compete in her first Senior competition, her first international competition, and her first competition representing her ancestral homeland; but it was also her 16th birthday!!!

:cheer: ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ ΜΑΡΙΛΕΝΑ!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

As for the skating, she finished 14th out of 14 in the SP, with a score of 33.10.

More details in the following post in her own Fan Fest thread:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/posts/2996266

Meanwhile, Emilea Zingas finished 7th out of 14 in the SP, with a score of 46.86.

More details in the following post in her own Fan Fest thread:

I hope so too! It would be great to see Cyprus represented at a Senior Major for the first time.

The Budapest Trophy is one of those logical competitions that has the FS starting order as a straight countdown of the SP results. Consequently, Marilena will be kicking off the Senior Ladies FS, while Emilea will be starting 7 from the end. I can't tell you any more, because the Entries / Results page is up the creek at the moment. It has a Warm-Up in between EVERY skater! :drama:

EDIT: The page has now been fixed, and Emilea will be the 8th skater to start. So, 5th skater in Group 2 (and penultimate skater before the resurfacing).

But what I can say is that the Senior Ladies FS is due to start on Saturday 17th October at 16:31 CEST (15:31 BST / 17:31 EEST).

Finally got the Budapest Trophy Ladies FS watched this morning, so can now tell you how the girls got on.

Marilena finished 11th out of 13 in the FS, with a score of 83.20 (there was a withdrawal after the SP). This meant that she moved ahead of Sinem Pekder to finish 12th overall, with a score of 116.30.

More details in the following post in her own Fan Fest thread:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/posts/2996268

Emilea finished 8th out of 13 in the FS, with a score of 97.75 (there was a withdrawal after the SP). This meant that she remained 7th overall, with a score of 144.61.

More details in the following post in her own Fan Fest thread:

:cheer: WELL DONE GIRLS!!! :cheer:

Emilea will be back in action in this week's Ice Star in Minsk. Although Marilena won't be joining her, she will have team-mates in the form of Angelina Kudriavtseva and Ilia Karankevich, who are competing in Junior Ice Dance.

The full details for the Short Dance are in my new post in Angelina and Ilia's thread. But, suffice to say, it starts 35 minutes from now. They are first to go in Group 2, with the Warm-Up starting in 1 hour from now, and their routine starting in 1h 5m from now.

Emilea will have to wait until the weekend to get into competitive action. The Senior Ladies SP is due to start on Saturday at 17:30:00 MSK (14:30:00 GMT / 16:30:00 EET / 19:30:00 YEKT).

As it is still a couple of days away, the draw hasn't taken place yet.

It's been a while since I posted in this thread, but there are finally some things to post about.

Firstly, today is the 19th birthday of Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides.

:cheer: HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIELLA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope she has had an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one for her.

Now, I didn't find this out until today, but Daniella is one of the European Young Olympic Ambassadors for this year's European Youth Olympic Festival in Vuokatti, Finland. The EYOF was originally supposed to be happening this week, but was postponed until December due to you-know-what.

Other figure skaters who are part of the 2021 EYOA programme are Pairs Skater Anna Duskova from the Czech Republic, Ladies Singles Skater Elisavet Voulgari from Greece, and Men's Singles Skater Jorik Hendrickx from Belgium.

Here is an interview Daniella did for the EYOF website:

http://www.eyof.org/ey-ambassadors/daniella-ipsarides/

She gives some interesting answers.

And for our Greek speakers, here are a couple of stories from a few weeks ago:

https://larnakasports.com/alla-spor...iazetai-olympiako-pagodromio»-(binteo/fotos)/

https://www.24sports.com.cy/gr/spor...sa-ypsaridoy-anoigei-ftera-pros-ta-oneira-tis

Sorry that I am only finding these now. It's amazing how much news you miss when you don't look at your Facebook news feed for about 6 months!

After quite a lengthy break, we finally have Cypriot skaters back in action over the next few weeks.

This week, Angelina and Ilia will be competing at the Ludmila Mikhailovskaya Dance Trophy in Odessa, the Ukraine. The event started today for the Novice Dancers, but the Junior and Senior Ice Dance competitions will begin tomorrow. I will post more details about when Angelina and Ilya will be skating in their own Fan Fest thread tomorrow, as the livestream link for Day 2 is not known yet.

And next week, Emilea is entered for the Tallink Hotels Cup in Tallinn, Estonia. The Short Programme is due to be held on Saturday 20th, and the Free Skate on Sunday 21st. I will post more details in this thread nearer the time.

And the following week, Emilea is also entered for the Challenge Cup in The Hague, the Netherlands.

No word yet about when we'll next see Marilena or any of the other team members in action.

And no word either about when Nationals will be held. (Given how strict the restrictions in Cyprus are, I can't see it happening this season).

Wait, they got rinks in Cyprus? Haha

I am of Greek decent btw. Both my parents were born in Greece.

These places aren’t known for their winter sports. The moment I enter a ski shop, I automatically become one of the top 5 Greek skiers since there are probably 3 Greek skiers altogether.

And I don’t ski. Haha

A very small rink in the middle of a shopping centre. The skaters that are based on the island train there, and Nationals are held there. I've watched some of the skaters from the boards at that rink, and it is scary how little space they have to do their jumps. And they can't build up speed either.

Since it was Daniella that I was discussing, here is a video of her from Nationals a few years ago:

18th March 2017: Cyprus Championships SP (No Commentary)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Ow_LbBKSg

And here she is doing the same programme at a Junior GP:

22nd September 2016: ISU Junior Grand Prix Ljubljana Cup SP (Canadian Commentary)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jese_Yj4sTk

You can see for yourself the difference!

Those that do get the opportunity to train on full sized rinks overseas are definitely at an advantage.

Incidentally, Emilea Zingas and Marilena Kitromilis (who are the skaters that started competing internationally this season) grew up in America, and came up through the American system. So, they haven't had the problems associated with training on the small rink. That said, I have seen videos of Marilena from a few years ago on said rink.

I am of Greek decent btw. Both my parents were born in Greece.

Thank you. Your avatar did make me suspicious that you had Greek heritage, and I was trying to work my way around to asking you. Put it like this, I didn't think Olympiakos would be very well known in America!

Oh, that's harsh. But, probably not too much of an exaggeration.

I don't know much about skiing in Greece, but Cyprus is actually an established skiing destination. There are Alpine skiing slopes up in the Troodos Mountains. Hey, the FIS even had their congress on the island in 1973!

So, winter sports are not completely unknown in Cyprus. But, figure skating is still in the developing phase. (What it'll really need to take off is a full sized rink).

Wow, that was very informative. Learned a lot.

If I win the big lottery jackpot here, I promises to build a full size rink over there.

Apologies that I didn't get posting before skating started in The Hague, but my computer died again this week. Fortunately, this time I had everything I needed and knew what I was doing, so it only took 2 days to sort it, rather than the month that it took the last time.

Emilea ended up withdrawing from the Tallink Hotels Cup, presumably because it would mean competing two weeks in a row. There was a bit of confusion as to where she would be competing this week, as she was entered for both the Challenge Cup and the Sofia Trophy.

Well, she competed in the SP at the Challenge Cup today. She finshed 5th out of 18 in the SP, with a score of 55.05.

Challenge Cup Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

There is no video uploaded yet.

This score was only 0.94 points lower than her absolute PB for the SP, achieved at the 2019 Midwestern Sectional Championships when she was skating in America. HOWEVER, the significance is that her TES today was 30.13. Which means that she now has all the minimums that she needs to compete at the World Champiponships!!! (She already had the minimum TES for the FS from the Santa Claus Cup)

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I haven't actually seen Emilea's skate today. But, given the scores, I'm sure it looked good!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The FS will be held tomorrow afternoon, starting at 13:00 CET (07:00 EST / 12:00 GMT / 14:00 EET). There is no Time Schedule PDF, so I do not have an exact time that Emilea will be skating. But she will be the fourteenth skater to start. So, second skater to go in Group 3.

The interesting thing is that Emilea is still on the Entry List for the Sofia Trophy. Looking at the timetables, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that she could do both competitions. The FS in the Challenge Cup is on Friday afternoon. And the SP at the Sofia Trophy isn't until Saturday evening.

Don't forget, back in 2015, Anastasia Galustyan, Aleksandra Golovkina and Angelīna Kučvaļska did both the EYOF in Austria and the European Championships in Sweden in a single week, with the FS of the EYOF the day before the SP of Europeans.

It's a big ask, though. Especially in these pandemic days when there are a lot less flights happening. However, there is a flight on Saturday morning leaving Amsterdam at 10:20 CET and arriving in Sofia at 14:00 EET... ;)

The thing that makes me think that Emilea will head to Sofia is that there are skaters from the Cypriot team competing there in the younger categories. The team could have a show of strength.

Ekaterina Luneva will be competing in Junior Ladies, while Stefania Yakovleva will be competing in Advanced Novice Ladies.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST TO ALL OF THEM!!! :cheer:

Well, the FS did it again for Emilea!

Emilea finished 2nd out of 18 in the FS, with a score of 116.25. This meant that she climbed to 3rd overall, with a score of 171.30.

I may not be a Billie Eilish fan, but boys that FS programme is bringing in the goods for Emilea!

The SP Start Orders for the Sofia Trophy were put up yesterday afternoon, and Emilea has indeed withdrawn. Stefania and Katya are still entered (and, by sheer coincidence, are both the antepenultimate starter in their respective SP).
