I am going to be offline for a while so, since it is not a secret on the island any more, I am going to reveal the second Junior Grand Prix slot to you now.

I am delighted to announce that the second Junior GP slot for Cyprus this season has been allocated to Giorgia Isabella Sechi (i.e. the girl in my avatar) for Czech Skate in Ostrava.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I admit, I have known for a while which 2 skaters would be representing Cyprus in the Junior GP Series this season. But I didn't know which competitions they were pencilled in for. However, as soon as I saw the documentation for each Junior GP, it was obvious which one Giorgia would be at. It was just a case of waiting to make sure that it was Eliana's name that appeared on the Provisional Entry List for the Amber Cup. And it did.

In my previous post, I commented:

The second slot will be officially confirmed in a few weeks. Ironically, I will probably not be able to post about it straight away, because I will actually be in Cyprus at the time!

But, if you look at the official documentation for the remaining competitions with a bit of knowledge about the Cypriot skating scene in your head, it is actually pretty easy to work out who is pencilled in for that second slot... ;)

Well, just to explain what I was referring to, Giorgia's coach is Peta Holbová Spyrou, a Czech woman who lives in Cyprus (her husband is Cypriot). So, if you knew this when looking at the table of countries represented at each Junior GP, it wouldn't have been a huge stretch of the imagination to work out that the Czech Skate slot was for Giorgia.

You may have noticed that neither of the girls who finished in the Top 2 at Junior Nationals are competing in the Junior GP Series this season. I have to be honest, I don't know why the champion, Chryso Georgiou, isn't competing. But, no doubt we will see her in the years to come.

As for silver medallist Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides, she has important school exams this year (just like Giorgia and Eliana did last year), and so is concentrating on her studies.

And I wish her all the best with her studies.

But, returning to the subject...

:cheer: ALL THE BEST GIORGIA!!! :cheer:

I can’t believe I forgot to post in the Fan Fest about how Eliana Kalogirou got on in her Junior GP debut at the Amber Cup! :drama:

I admit that before the Amber Cup, Eliana was the skater that I was least familiar with amongst the Junior Ladies field in Cyprus. But having seen how she got on in Kaunas, I now think she is somebody we should keep an eye on.

Eliana finished 33rd out of 33 in the Junior Ladies SP, with a score of 14.47.

Here is what was written about Eliana in the Amber Cup Ladies SP thread:

You know, that was a pleasant surprise.

Although Eliana is at the bottom of the table at the moment, I can see potential.

Like all the Cypriot girls, she doesn't have as much speed as the top skaters. But, that is to be expected when the rink in her home country (in fact, her home town) is so small. And the fact that she is so tall means that the effect is magnified for her compared to shorter girls.

But, I was impressed with what she was actually doing. If she builds up the speed over the next couple of years, I can see her becoming a familiar face on the international stage.

:cheer: WELL DONE, ELIANA!!! :cheer:

Here is what was written about Eliana in the Amber Cup Ladies FS thread:

Eliana has a pretty dress, hope she has a good skate. :)

It is pretty, isn't it! Unfortunately, she didn't have a good skate.

That was a rough one. Next time, next time.

After being so impressed with her SP yesterday, it was heartbreaking how today went. Quite a few stumbles and 2 falls was unfortunate enough. But then she continued on for ages after the music finished (probably a direct result of the stumbles and falls putting her behind).

I do hope that we get to see her more often, because from what I saw in the SP, I do think she has potential.

Bear in mind, although Eliana is one of the older skaters in the Junior GP Series, she has only been skating for 6 years. Most of the other skaters we see representing Cyprus started skating just after the My Mall rink opened in 2010; Eliana didn't start until 2012.

So, I think she has done very well to reach the Junior GP Series so quickly. ;)

Today mightn't have gone the way you hoped, Eliana, but I for one and proud of what you have achieved!

At some stage in their career, every skater has a day when nothing seems to go right. And that is what happened with Eliana’s FS. So, it would be unfair to put too much weight on that.

On the whole, I was impressed with Eliana in her Junior GP debut.

Hopefully things will go well for Giorgia in her Junior GP debut at Czech Skate this week.

Given that I have been shouting it from the rooftops for what seems like ages, it will come as no surprise to readers of this forum that Giorgia Isabella Sechi made her Junior Grand Prix debut at Czech Skate.

Before I get into what happened on the ice, I would like to just say that Giorgia’s dresses for this season are absolutely beautiful. In the Short Programme, she has a black dress with a British Racing Green trim at the end of it. While in the Free Skate, she has a Royal Blue dress which has a sparkly pattern design under Giorgia’s right arm.

During Warm-Up –

Ciao bella!!!

CaroLiza_fan

Yeah, that last post was for Giorgia. :)

She did a nice jump when the camera was focussed on her.

CaroLiza_fan

During the actual routine –

Well done Giorgia! I like her music and her very superheroic archer's jerkin, and her determination to stay upright and keep pushing through.

Thanks. And very clever comment working in references to the music! (Although, I see Ted was reading from the ISU Bio, which had the composers the wrong way around)

You could see Giorgia was nervous even before she started. But, who could blame her?

As Ted said, the stumbles could very easily have turned into falls, and she did very well to save them.

She is a very determined young woman. The fact that she is here skating in a Junior Grand Prix at all is tantamount to that. (I know you read it, but if anybody else wants to know her back story, see my post in the Pre-chat thread).

Giorgia's happy with her score. I was happy with it anyway, but this makes me even happier!

So proud of her.

Giorgia also gets a mention in a viewer’s e-mail that Ted Barton read out during the Group 4 Warm-Up at 3h 59m 24s.

Here is what was written about Giorgia in the Czech Skate Ladies FS thread:

It's easier to see today because she wasn't so nervous, but Giorgia has some nice lines in her steps and spins.

Yep, now that she has got the pressure of doing her first routine at this level out of the way, it has made all the difference. That was a beautiful skate.

There was one landing where it looked like she was going to fall backwards, and I had my heart in my mouth. But, thankfully she regained her balance.

She was happy in the kiss and cry. And she had every reason to be!

:cheer: WELL DONE GIORGIA!!! :cheer:

D'aww that kid with with Giorgia's coach in the Kiss and Cry - Ted certainly found it amusing!

Polkadots in da house!

I thought that was lovely Petra bringing her son in to get the results with her. This is a home competition for Petra, so this would have been lovely for her family and friends here in the Czech Republic that don't get to see him that often. Just a pity that the wee fella was asleep!

I know I am totally biased when it comes to Giorgia, but I am incredibly proud of what she achieved in Ostrava.

Over the past couple of years, she has gone through a long and hard journey back from injury. And when she made her debut on the big stage, she certainly did not disgrace herself. She proved that all the hard work was worth it!

:cheer: WELL DONE, GIORGIA!!! :cheer:

There is something significant from Nationals that I feel should be highlighted here, though. The only person to have represented Cyprus internationally in Men’s skating, Nikita Vitranyuk, is now doing Ice Dance, where he is partnering Maria MILIYKOVA, a 12 year old from Moscow (fskate.ru Bio).

They were due to be guest competitors at the end of Nationals yesterday, but the Ice Dance page hasn't been updated. So I don't know if they did.

I hope they opt to represent Cyprus, as it would be great to see a new country competing in Ice Dance. And it would be nice to see Cyprus represented in another category, having only been represented in Singles up to now.

OK, so I have been a bit quiet lately, but it is now time to make a few announcements.

Firstly, the Fan Fest posts for all the skaters were brought fully up to date a few weeks ago. There have been a few significant changes to the line-up, though.

As he is now competing in Ice Dance rather than in Singles Skating, Nikita Vitryanyuk has been moved out of this thread. Don't worry, he is not being expelled from the Team Cyprus thread because he is now back to representing Russia. The reason he is being moved is purely because, when it comes to Pairs or Ice Dance partnerships, it is easier to organise the Original Posts if the partnership has it's own thread.

Here are the links to Nikita's new threads:

OK, so I have some big news.

Firstly, Maria MILIUKOVA / Nikita VITRYANYUK are now representing Cyprus rather than Russia in Advanced Novice Ice Dance.

Good move, guys! :agree:

Secondly, there is also a second partnership representing Cyprus in Advanced Novice Ice Dance:

Angelina KUDRIAVTSEVA / Ilia KARANKEVICH

But here is the really big news... the results from the two partnerships! :jaw:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

This is big. This is the first season that Cyprus has been represented in Ice Dance. And even at this early stage of the season, they have 2 partnerships who are finishing regularly in the top echelons of international competitions! And in big fields at that.

Not only that, but both partnerships have finished on the podium.

In both of these competitions, there has been at least one partnership representing Cyprus in the Top 5 of EVERY SEGMENT. And if you take out the Argentine Tango from Riga, then that statement could be improved to refer to the Top 3 of every segment!!!

Things are getting very exciting for figure skating in Cyprus.

Firstly, here is an article about Giorgia that was published on the Páfos Net website (in Greek):

http://pafosnet.com/giorgia-isabell...Vw-ZRzSbx4EKyCGNp76IABXU4FLXwia24GtWXuj9TRM3s

Although it is dated yesterday, it has been around for a while, because the first link I have found to this article was posted back in September!

(I think it has a new date because there was a photo from Czech Skate added to it. But, the article itself is the same, as it still talks about the competition in the future tense).

Also, there will be Cypriot representation at this week's Tallinn Trophy in Estonia.

Maria and Nikita will again be in action in Advanced Novice Ice Dance, but this time without their team-mates. The Pattern Dances are this afternoon, while the Free Skate is tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Stefania YAKOVLEVA will be competing in Basic Novice Ladies on Sunday morning. She is having a busy time of it, as she was competing in Skate Celje in Slovenia on Friday morning! :drama:

More details in the following post in her own Fan Fest thread:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/posts/2996260

All the best to the Cypriot skaters competing in Estonia this week!!!

Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides was on cookery programme "Mia Valítsa Géfseis" on Sigma TV this morning.

No, Daniella wasn't cooking. She was talking to presenter Christina Kyriakou at the My Mall rink, and then took her onto the ice and gave her a bit of a lesson.

Today's episode was all about Russia. And since figure skating is so popular in Russia, I guess that is how they worked this feature in.

Here is the episode on Sigma's website. Daniella's part starts at 32m 55s, and lasts to the end of the programme:

https://www.sigmatv.com/shows/miavalitsageusis/episodes/13084

I loved that a very seasonal support thingy was used.

Great to see Daniella getting exposure on national TV again.

Páfos Net have today published another article about Giorgia. The Cyprus Olympic Committee held their annual Youth Awards ceremony last night (for the announcement, see this article on the Committee's website), and Giorgia won the award for best figure skater.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Here is the story (in Greek):

http://pafosnet.com/giorgia-sechi-i...-vraveia-tis-koe-gia-tous-kaluterous-athlites

There are a couple of really lovely photos of her and Petra included in the story.

And now that Páfos Net have mentioned it at the end of their story, I can reveal that Giorgia and Laura will be competing at the Cup Of Tyrol at the end of this month. Since Daniella is currently on a sabbatical, and since he has so many commitments with the ISU, Pavel Chernoushov is no longer coaching in Cyprus. So, Laura has moved to working with Petra.

Before that, we will see Angelina and Ilia in action in Advanced Novice Ice Dance next week at the Bavarian Open. And again at the Ice Mall Cup in Israel in 3 weeks time.

In terms of the Singles skaters, it is a smaller contingent of largely younger skaters going to the Ice Mall Cup this year. There will be 5 girls going, of which Christiana Afxentiou in Advanced Novice is the only one in the ISU part of the event (the others, including Christiana's sister, are in the Interclub part).

Today is 10th March.

For fans of martial arts films, it is Chuck Norris’ birthday.
For fans of American Idol, it is Carrie Underwood’s birthday.
For fans of Ice Dance, it is Sergey Mozgov’s birthday.

But for us fans of Cypriot figure skating, today is the day that Laura Farran becomes a teenager!!!

:cheer: HAPPY 13th BIRTHDAY LAURA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :hb: :points:

I hope you are having an enjoyable day, and that the next year is a good one for you, both on and off the ice!

And if her results from a couple of weeks ago are anything to go by, it WILL be a good year on the ice! :agree:

[…continued from previous post]

At the end of February, Laura Farran was part of a 3-strong delegation from FSC Glace that competed at the Cup Of Tyrol in Innsbruck.

Laura finished 23rd out of 29 in the Basic Novice Girls competition, with a score of 21.49.

I know she will be annoyed that she had 2 falls, but when you look past them, that was a great skate from Laura!!!

It has been a couple of years since I last saw Laura in competition (2017 Nationals), and she has progressed so much in that time.

We actually had FSC Glace skaters topping and tailing Group 3. Laura was the last of the 8 skaters in the group to skate, but the first was a skater I hadn’t actually seen before, Vanessa Toderenko Papas.

Video (whole day): https://livestream.com/sportevents/events/7993040/videos/188031607 (Group 3 Warm-Up starts at 3h 40m 06s)

If you look carefully at the end of the warm-up, Laura is at the far end of the rink to the camera and carries on the move she is doing after the skaters are told to leave the ice, and then exits at a different opening to the others. And she did all so that she could wish Vanessa good luck as she was coming off the ice!

Vanessa finished 29th out of 29 in the Basic Novice Girls competition, with a score of 12.07.

As I said, I am not familiar with Vanessa, so I hope we get to see more of her over the coming years.

The following day, Giorgia Isabella Sechi was in action in the Junior Ladies SP.

Giorgia finished 20th out of 20 in the Junior Ladies SP, with a score of 14.27.

Here is what was written in the Competition Thread:

Awww. Petra's brought her son along! Love the way he was already sitting on the sofa waiting for Giorgia and his Mum!

Feel so sorry for Giorgia. The programme actually started off really well, and you could see things had improved a lot from the last time we saw it. But then she lost her confidence after the fall. Like, not long afterwards, she was setting up a jump, and she bailed out of it. Her heart just wasn't in it towards the end, to the extent that she finished a bit early and had to wait for the music to finish.

I just wanted to go and give her a big hug!

Then I think of Czech Skate, where she was disappointed with her SP (it was her JGP debut, and you could see she was nervous before she even started). But then she did a lot better in the FS. So, hopefully the same will happen here.

You can be sure I'll be cheering you on, Gio! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

She has a really good program for the free skate too. Fingers crossed for her! And I won't be able to sit up to 3:30am and watch Laurine skate, so I'll just say chookas to her now too and check back in the morning for the scores (hoping for good news...) :hap10:

Thanks, Harriet. I really enjoyed her FS when she performed it at Czech Skate, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again here.

Unfortunately, I am going to be away for most of today, so will not be watching the skating LIVE. I'm heartbroken that I'll miss Giorgia, but I should be home before the 4 hour catch-up limit reaches her FS.

Hey, at least with being the first to go in the FS, she won't be waiting around all day for her turn.

["cheer" emoticon removed from quote] ALL THE BEST, GIORGIA!!! ["cheer" emoticon removed from quote]

CaroLiza_fan

And she did go on to do better in the FS the next day!

Giorgia finished 20th out of 20 in the Junior Ladies FS, with a score of 28.33.

Here is what was written in the Competition Thread:

Right, as soon as I arrived home, I wound back to watch Giorgia. And then I wrote this LONG message.

When she fell twice not long into the programme, I was worried that it was going to turn out like yesterday and it was going to dent her confidence. But, thankfully it didn't. I think the difference today is that in both cases she was so close to staying upright. The second fall was a bit of a weird one. She managed the first part of the combo no problem, but just after she finished the second part, one foot hit the other and that was what actually sent her down, rather than the element itself.

She managed alright through the rest of the programme. There was one moment where she hesitated as she thought she was too close to the boards (the irony to this, of course, is that she trains on a rink that is less than a quarter of the size of what she was on today!). But, she needn't have worried, there was just enough space.

Giorgia didn't seem as annoyed after the routine as she did yesterday, and I can understand why. Even with the 2 falls, on the whole it went a lot better than the SP.

On each occasion I've seen Giorgia competing this season, the FS has always gone better than the SP. It could just be nerves at the start of a competition, but there does seem to be something about the FS that works better for her.

So, if her and Petra can work out what it is about the FS that agrees with her, and do something similar for the SP next season, it could be a very fruitful exercise. :agree:

Well done to all three girls that went to Innsbruck, and all the best to them and the other Cypriot skaters at Nationals!

Thank you for the link! :thank: I watched on Facebook, and it was a really interesting interview, in perfect English from both. I thought the interviewer, although obviously not a Skating fan, had done some research, and asked great questions. The part about changing her coach because he was sweary and only allowed her to eat 1 apple in 2 days was eye opening! And great that the interviewer said "that's a starvation diet, good that you changed coach". It's such a shame there is no Zamboni in Cyprus, and she has to train in such poor conditions with snow on the ice, but all the best to Daniella for the future. :agree:

I went back and watched the interview again from the beginning, and posted the link on Twitter (where incidentally there is a Saskia Constantinou, but a different one in London). Good job I checked before tagging her!

It's such a pleasure to hear an interview with a teenager speaking so eloquently in what is not even her native language. Amazing! In marked contrast to some of our teenage skaters who sadly are nowhere near as eloquent in their mother tongue, and every second word is "Like".

I hope Daniella is successful in her A Levels and goes on to achieve her ambition of studying in America where she can resume her Skating career with hopefully better facilities and coaching. :agree:

OK, so a couple of important updates.

Firstly, today is the 20th birthday of the reigning Senior Ladies Champion, Polina Ustinova!!!

:cheer: С ДНЕМ РОЖДЕНИЯ ПОЛИНА!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :hb: :points:

I hope you are having an enjoyable day, and that the next year is a good one for you, both on and off the ice!

I also hope that your twenties will be even better for you than your teenage years were! ;)

Secondly, we have had an update on this year’s Nationals.

Here what the statement on the CSF website says:

"Cyprus Skating Federation, after the Council Decision on the 03/04/2019, announces that Cyprus National Skating Championships will be held on the 18th – 19th of May 2019.

More information you can find in the announcement (link below) or contact your club representative in the Council.

Yours sincerely,
OC"

Thank goodness for that!

All the best to everybody who is taking part!

And hot on the heels of one birthday, we have another!

Today is the feast day of St. George. Which can only mean one thing - it is also Giorgia Isabella Sechi's birthday!!!

:cheer: TANTI AUGURI GIORGIA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :hb: :points:

But it is not just any birthday - it is actually Giorgia's 18th birthday. So, since it was a milestone birthday, I decided to do something special to mark it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLf4Dagfitg

There is actually a story behind the choice of singer. I haven’t made many Fan Videos because my video editing skills are very basic. But for those videos that I have made, I have used music that involves somebody from Northern Ireland. This time, I went for a singer from London. Why? Because the singer in question has a Northern Irish Mum and a Cypriot Dad!

And although the song is not her own, I loved the message behind it. It is about being a strong woman, just like Giorgia is.

Everything just seemed to fit perfectly.

All the best to Giorgia for Nationals next month, and also for the coming season.

Firstly, I have to start with an apology. With everything that has been happening this week, I missed a couple of important birthdays. :drama:

Danai Hadjimisti’s birthday was on Friday:

HAPPY BELATED 16th BIRTHDAY DANAI!!!

And Eliana Kalogirou’s birthday was on Saturday:

HAPPY BELATED 18th BIRTHDAY ELIANA!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope you both had enjoyable days, and that the coming year is a good one for both of you.

Sadly, the rumours are true. The Ice Dance partnership between Maria Miliukova and Nikita Vityranyuk has split up.

However, Nikita has already re-appeared with a new partner, Diana LEKHTMAN from Saint Petersburg.

Here is Diana’s fskate.ru Bio

Diana started this season with Fedor Sharonov (with whom she finished 3rd in the first stage of the St. Petersburg Cup), and finished this season with Roman Atoyar (with whom she finished 6th in the St. Petersburg Championships).

As with Maria and Nikita in last season’s Nationals, Diana and Nikita are entered as guest competitors in Advanced Novice Ice Dance.

As Diana has been competing for Russia this season, she is not currently eligible to compete for Cyprus. Hence why they are competing as guest skaters.

Given that we were expecting Maria and Nikita to move up to Juniors next season, it is surprising that Diana and Nikita are entered in Advanced Novice. But there are a couple of plausible explanations for this. Firstly, Diana’s Bio doesn’t give her exact DOB, so she might still be too young for Juniors. But the more likely explanation is that the timing of the Cypriot Championships means that there was simply not enough time to put together two Junior programmes.

I wonder what is happening with Maria. She is too good to be left on the sidelines.

The Cypriot National Championships were held over the weekend. For more see the dedicated thread:

Although she was not competing this year, Daniella was presented with an award at Nationals for everything she has achieved during her career.

She has put up a lovely post about it on both her personal Facebook profile and her Instagram page. Since the privacy settings on the Facebook version (which has more photos) is not set to public, here is the Instagram version:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxpLL56Fcrr/

Fortunately, one of the additional photos that was in the Facebook version has been posted separately on Instagram:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxpzCmwlukY/

Daniella also put a lovely close-up photo of the trophy and plaque up on her Facebook profile. So, hopefully she will put this photo up somewhere public as well.

As a fan, I really hope that this presentation is not a sign that Daniella’s sabbatical is becoming something more permanent. I would really miss her if it was.

But as a friend, I just want her to live the life she wants and be happy. :)

Just letting you know that all the photos I was talking about did eventually get put together into a public post on the Skate Cyprus club's Facebook Page. They can be viewed in this post:

https://www.facebook.com/skatecyprus.org/posts/2179630792115071

Included at the end of this post is a nice group photo of most of the Junior and Senior skaters, as well as the Ice Dancers, with their trophies, medals and certificates. Here is the direct link:

  • Ilia Karankevich and Angelina Kudryavtseva (1st Advanced Novice Ice Dance)

Daniella has just made the following announcement:

After 10 years of competitive figure skating until the level of junior ladies and after participating in the top international figure skating competitions like the ISU Junior Grand Prix and the European Youth Olympic Festival it is time for me to pass on my knowledge of this amazing sport to the younger generation. I am ready to teach the skills of figure skating to our future champions immediately. Those who are interested in this beautiful sport can contact me through, Instagram- @daniellaipsarides or through my personal Facebook account- Daniella Ipsarides or even by telephone!!It will be a great pleasure for me to help young beginner athletes to love our sport. Looking forward to see you on the Ice soon!!!!!

Daniella has done so much to put Cyprus on the figure skating map. So, it is so good to hear that she is going to stay in the sport in a coaching capacity, and pass on the knowledge that she has acquired to the next generation.

I'm sure she'll be great at it.

All the best to her.

P.S. I hope you guys like my new avatar of Daniella and Giorgia. It is such a beautiful photo that as soon as I saw it, I just had to make it into an avatar!
