Latest article from Lynn Rutherford: Vincent Zhou’s New Coaches Impressed With Renewed Dedication

Lori: “The main goal is to get him to nationals healthy physically, healthy emotionally, healthy mentally, doing the best he could for step one,” she said. “It’s so tempting, he wants to do all the other quads and we’re beginning them, but the goal is to do it when his body is really ready.”

“We wrote down all of the things we would love to see him improve, to be the best he can be,” Nichol said. “We just start pulling out the things that can be done now, and if he is blessed to go to worlds, we can do some next week and the next and the next, and (have the changes) be attainable and sustainable for worlds.”

Vincent: “I think Lee has been very, very good with understanding me as a skater and helping me build toward this competition in a way I feel comfortable with,” the skater said, adding that he didn’t think a complete do-over of his jump technique was necessary."

Thanks to Lynn for another descriptive and informative piece.

So happy that the new coaches sound like the perfect team to help Vincent get back in shape, physically and mentally, and to improve on all aspects of his skating, one step at a time. Good luck in the free!

Some catching up from yesterday:

Video of Vincent interviewed by Michael Weiss after SP, shown on the Jumbotron

Awesome job on a clean, inspired FS skate, Vincent!

Clip of FS from USFS: Vincent brings the crowds to its feet

Rockerskating notes: Vincent Zhou
4S, 3Lz, 3F, 3A3T, 3Lo2T(ftdwn), 3A(hangs on), 3Lz1Eu3S - he is someone who had very few expectations this week; having another few more days of training time really helped

Given how little time he had, this was amazing. :agree: but I guess I will have to do some nail-biting to see the selections.

Vincent was great!

I'm kind of hoping he goes to 4CC but not worlds. Because he hasn't had much practice time, I think it would be very difficult to make the podium at Worlds this time around. I know that once Vincent is training full-time again -- and for an entire season -- he will have all of his quads back and be better than ever.

According to this twit, Zhou got Worlds

https://twitter.com/ifsmagazine/status/1221614207222853632?s=20

 be true... sorry, I am so selfish, I really want to see Zhou skating live :)

And, yup, officially confirmed:

:yes2:

Hi, lariko! Joining you in the celebration! :hap10::clap: The reigning World bronze medalist has returned to skating form in such a short amount of time that 2 more months of training is sufficient to get back his 4Lz and be more competitive by Worlds.

Copying official announcements from FS Online:

US Men Worlds Team:
https://twitter.com/fsonline/status/1221616838318215168?s=21

MEN
Jason Brown
Nathan Chen
Vincent Zhou

Alternate 1 –Tomoki Hiwatashi
Alternate 2 –Andrew Torgashev
Alternate 3 –Camden Pulkinen

4CC Team: https://twitter.com/fsonline/status/1221616990248480768?s=21
Jason, Tomoki, Camden

Your concern is understandable, but Vincent has a better chance of increasing his BV much more by Worlds than competing at 4CC in less than a month’s time. Whether or not he has a good chance of getting back on the podium, USFS obviously feels he has a better chance than Tomoki, who did great at Nats but doesn’t have the experience nor competitive consistency. Under the guidance of the new coaching team, Vincent still has a good chance, since his closest competitors all had inconsistent results all season.

Vincent did really well at nationals. Congrats on the great skate.

4CC is tough for US skaters. Practice starts the 4th of Feb. That's rough. I think he's probably better off just working on his stamina/getting his jumps back than flying to Korea in a couple days.

^^^ Agree, discode. 4CC is too soon. Good luck to the guys on the team in getting ample rest & training.

So happy that Vincent did so well considering he even was question marking himself. It was a victory of all sorts, and im very sure this has given him the boost and confidence to do well at Worlds.

Latest IG message from Vincent, as eloquent as ever:

If I've learned anything from the past weekend, it's that I'm highly resilient and capable of more than I know. A month ago, I was completely off the ice and even the prospect of competing at Nationals seemed unlikely. Once back on, my team and I were merely figuring out the basics again. Last week, I could barely land a triple Axel in my program and the quad seemed like a far off hope. I came in not even expecting to make the final group for the FS. This week, I overcame all my doubts to rise to the occasion. Making the world team seemed not much more than a whim, yet still it happened, and I couldn't be more humbled and hungry to prove myself worthy of that spot.
My heartfelt thanks goes out to Greensboro, to the volunteers, to my new team, to my mother, and to all my friends and fans, for making this an unforgettable week. Til next time!
We are so proud of you, Vincent! Best wishes on your training with the new coaching team for another successful Worlds competition. Rooting for you, always!

Hola, ElSoteroLoco, bienvenido! Good to see new fan posting here. You're so right about this competition giving Vincent the boost and confidence to do well at Worlds. As Vincent posted himself, he is now more hungry to prove himself worthy of the Worlds Team spot. Us fans are so excited to see him in action again in a few months.

Analysis from @Skating Scores of Vincent's and Tomoki's scores:
Some US Mens stats from the Fall 2019 SR Int'l season (Grand Prix+Challenger Series).
Zhou did just one CS event. Compared to Hiwatashi, he has higher Mean Event & SP Totals.
But if u include Zhou's Japan Open FS (167.64), he also has the higher Mean FS Total: 155.28.

Congrats to Vincent on his pewter. I confess I was kind of holding my breath when he came out to skate his short. I guess I (like so many people!) had no idea what to expect. Amazing how good his 4S looked with only starting to land it just recently!

Just dropping by to say how impressed I was by Vincent at Nats - he did great! It’s amazing how well he did with just a short amount of training and with a new coach, too! Both programs were really enjoyable and he did some of the best skating I’ve ever seen from him!

Thanks for including a link to my video of Vincent being interviewed on the jumbotron, zenchio! Vincent was surprisingly good at nationals. He had a tough time at Brown trying to skate. I'm glad he's with Barkell & Lori Nichol now, getting better each day. It was a privilege to see him skate at nationals!

Hi, Arriba! Thank you for sharing. You must have had a great time in Greensboro! We had no idea how Vincent would do, after reading the articles and seeing his interview with Michael Weiss. Plus Rockerskating did not report any quads in his SP practice. I just prayed that his training with the new coaching team would be sufficient for a satisfactory performance (not falling down 6 times, in his words ;)). Very happy his muscle memory came back and all those years of training & competing returned to form, once he got his mindset in the right frame. It was great to see him perform with such joy. His new coaching team was really wise in cutting back the TES content. Thanks to coach Hamada in hooking Vincent up with Lee, and thank you, Lori, for upgrading to official coach status.

Thank you for sharing your positive review, Tavi! :) It's so good to know it's not just us "biased" fans who have enjoyed Vincent's skating, LOL. As I and others have noted, Vincent really skated with a new sense of joy & freedom. :agree: It must be from him not having to deal with the pressure of defending his podium finish or even the expectation of making it to the final group. Also just being grateful & happy to be able to return to skating & competing. And of course, the watered down tech content gave him the freedom to focus more on the performance side. It's safe to say the experience at Brown provided fresh perspective and outlook, which would carry over into his attitude & drive on ice. Let's hope he continues this upward trend into Worlds. :2thumbs:

That's your channel, livetoskate? Thank you SO MUCH for uploading your precious clips! :thank: Glad you got to see Vincent live, surpassing everyone's expectations, including those of himself. If you don't mind my linking to your video of the men's medal ceremony. I've been too busy with work and recovering from a cold to do more searching for official videos, if there are any out there. This IG account has all the latest photos and clips, but sometimes the account holder doesn't repost without getting permission first. If anybody has a link to a closer video, please share. Lee and Lori make a dynamic coaching team for Vincent. He doesn't need an overhaul of his jumps, just some tweeking on the technique. And Vincent has repeatedly mentioned how special Lori is, so he must feel a special bond with her. She is the perfect person to help him broaden his emotional scope & delivery on ice. Glad he started the Chinese New Year on such a great note! Looking forward for more good things to come.
