Oh I see. Personally, I feel very happy when a non-Japanese speaker try to learn how to pronounce my name in Japanese... Yes, Reeds case is very interesting - it questions what is 'authentic' really. And just to confuse people more, my name is pronounced somewhat differently in my dialect from how it sounds in a standard Japanese  I suppose we could have both  Thank you for your videos too!

My two cents (although I am not in charge) are that I hope that this thread is a suitable home for raw videos like yours.

But ... with the understanding that some of the raw videos posted in the thread simply will remain here in unedited form.

Hopefully easy enough to skip over for those who are not interested. But accessible to those who are interested :).

I can add the new videos together, but I can't edit already published YouTube videos. So the existing versions out there would either need to be deleted, or just left as old duplicates. The old Yuzuru one has a lot of views and will probably be the first thing that pops up in searches right now.

Here are some new edits with both Japanese and English versions:

Yuzuru Hanyu (Japanese/English)

Satoko Miyahara (Japanese/English)

Mao Asada (Japanese/English)

I can do the Viktoria Helgesson clip from the link above if you really want it, but all she says is "I'm Viktoria from Sweden" (no last name). Any specific reason you like this one over the clip posted earlier in this thread? (again, no issue making another clip with the 'newer' version, just wanted to make sure that's the one you actually want)

A few edits:

Alena Leonova

Rudi Swiegers

Mao Asada

Evgeni Plushenko

Plushenko's is wrong. He pronounced like the people use to pronounce his name in english.

This is the good pronouncing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5KHRGyPAWA

Do you have a video of Plushenko himself saying his name по-русски?

So far, this thread has been sticking to a high standard of skaters themselves saying their own names.
(As opposed to a the skater's name being said by a third party, even if the third party is a native speaker of the skater's language.)

As for the video of Plushenko saying his name for an English-speaking audience:
I would not say that his pronunciation is "wrong." Plushenko chose a pronunciation for that audience -- in the same way that Japanese skaters modify the pronunciations of their names for an English-speaking audience, as we have discussed in this thread.
Neither pronunciation is wrong, if it came out of the skater's own mouth.

Came across this while doing the video search for the Fan Fest I am currently working on, and thought I would share it here now:

Anna Dušková

My goodness, she's like a wee child in this video! Yet it was only uploaded 2 years ago!

I'll let you know if I come across anything similar for Martin when I move onto his search.

Does anybody know how to pronounce Kim Yuna's name ?
I once read that it's closer to Gim Yon-A than to " Yoona ", the way most commentators pronounce it.

Her korean name is 김연아
Kim Yeon Ah or Kim Yeon A (김연아)
Kim Yuna (김유나)
Koreans say Yeon A not Yuna, but Yuna is more easy to pronounce so she changed her english name to Yuna.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbo7vLFOnms at 17s pronunciation is more similar to korean pronunciation Kim Yeon A.

This discussion actually cropped up before a year or 2 ago in a different thread.

Unfortunately, I can't remember who it was that told us, or in what thread (probably somewhere in the "Stupid Questions Thread", but it has become such a monster that it is near impossible to find things in it!)

But ever since then, I have been making a point of writing the Latin transliteration of her name as "Yun-A", rather than the "Yu-Na" that I used to write.

I thought it would be more respectful to split it the more accurate way.

The thing that surprised me was that it seems that I am the only one that has started doing that.

Which is ironic, seeing as I was not a big fan of Yun-A!

I agree with you. You’re right.
But YUNA is actually called Yu Na in Korea. We tend to split YUNA to YU Na.
It’s so complicated as you said.
We better separate her English name from her Korean name I guess.

Mmmm. I didn't realise that the Koreans split it as "Yu-Na" as well. Seems strange, seeing as you pronounce it the other way.

But, at least it explains why us English-speakers split it that way. I thought it was just us being ignorant of foreign languages!

If that is the way the native Korean speakers split it, then that is good enough for me. :agree:

Thank you for the clarification!

Japanese Names

I would like to share some audio files of Japanese skaters/coaches/choreographers' names pronounced by native Japanese speakers. These are good examples for those who would like to learn correct pronunciation.

I think pronunciation by kyokotokyojapan is the best. She pronounces distinctly and beautifully :)

Here are some good audio files I've found so far:
