Hi, I'm a big fan of Nick since Mary Poppins and am so happy to see him back from his injury in such a great form. The Elvis Program is so much better than his first outing! I'm hoping for a very good result at JWC for him.

Now I'm a bit confused about his family name. It's a french name and you would normally pronounce it like "Na-dough", but his own pronunciation is like "Na-do". Why is that? Is it this way in Quebec?

Oh God. I think I would enjoy latin quite a bit :luv17:

I mean, he's got that 'look' about himself - the way he engages into performance, with music, audience, his great expression would really shine in Latin program I feel. And call me vain - but his physical looks are also perfect for Latin for me

Here's a higher quality video of Nic's Elvis Presley LP  :luv17: : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alg9vDg21jE&t=16m19s

I love the following quote from his interview with PJ Kwong (https://www.facebook.com/160862723932173/videos/vb.160862723932173/1431728246845608/?type=2&theater) because I was thinking throughout his program that it was wholly appropriate that he was portraying the King of Rock n' Roll because Nic was skating like he was the King of the Ice:

"[Elvis Presley] was the king, and today, I really felt like I was the king. I maybe not winning the competition, but in my own heart, doing this kind of program at the Canadians, I felt like the king."

Oh Nic, you're the new King of my heart! He had already impressed me when he won the silver medal at last year's Junior Worlds, and he definitely took it up notch by basically proclaiming with that awesome LP that "I'm Canada's next big star." I had a huge smile on my face throughout his performance, shrieking and giggling in front of my TV like the silly fangirl than I am. I couldn't be happier that such a gifted athlete (my jaw dropped when he landed that quad loop!) and showman is the future of Canadian men's figure skating. As a fan, I feel so blessed and spoiled that despite Canada's relatively small population size, we somehow produce these exceptional male skaters far more often than probability would normally allow, and Nic is certainly continuing that trend.

he says it normally... ;) it's not really na-dough the o sound is pronounced shorter in Nadeau.

You are right, "dough" was not ideal to describe the sound, it's too long. But my point was he sounds like french "ou" instead of french "eau" :scratch2:

I listened to it again... anyways... it doesn't harm to spend time with Nic ;) hehe...

To me it sounds like EAU. However, he does speak in a very colloquial manner, quite fast and with the traditional "quebecois" colloquial combination of syllables. So perhaps, if you are not francophone or if you come from another part of the world, it's a bit different.

He says "Je m'appelle Nicolas Nadeau and then goes right into J'ai 18 ans...

If you put those two sentences together very fast, the consonant almost disappears and it sounds almost like Na-deau-ai 18 ans. The j sound is there but is not emphasized.

This creates a bit of a diphthong on the O sound which perhaps alters the quality of the vowel sound. It is not a diction textbook pure O sound. However, it is definitely not OU and if you listen to him for the rest of the interview you will get that colloquial accent... most kids speak like that :)

Well, now that the US men are done and I've had a chance to look at the vids....

Bravo, Nicolas! That is sooooooo much better than the club comp version in the summer (was it ever determined if Nic was unknowingly injured, a la Jason Brown at NHK, in the summer. That club comp version was rough).

I may be a little at odds with others here, but I loved this in spite of the music. I *cannot* *stand* Elvis, cannot stand the typical Elvis moves, and Nic drew me in despite the music and the moves. Just like he sold the heck out of Mary Poppins last year, when I first found out about him.

But he is a natural performer, and I loooove the natural performers. Best of luck at JWC!:clapper:

I like your avatar, siberia82:biggrin:

Thanks. ;) The image quality is low, but you can still tell that Nic is gorgeous draped in a Canadian flag.

Out of curiosity, are non-Canadians geoblocked from watching this fluff piece that was released last year?

English: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/facesoftomorrow/nicolas-nadeau-1.3280841

French (please note that what Nic says in the French version is slightly different than the English one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coHMpS-zoQM

Sadly, Americans are indeed blocked from the CBC fluff. At least this one is.

I have only ever watched videos of Nic speaking French; how is his English? (Better than my French, I'd wager. ;))

Nic has an accent in English (you can tell he's a native French-speaker) but it is easy to understand him and he seems quite articulate. The clip was probably rehearsed, so it's a bit hard to judge his comprehension and vocabulary.

You can judge his English for yourself with these 3 vids (which I think are accessible to everyone) :) :

2015 JGP Zagreb post-LP interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdR-Mq8NPR8

2016 Junior Worlds Men LP Small Medal interview (this one's awkward): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t3O-R4rQN4

2017 Canadian Nationals post-LP interview by PJ Kwong: https://www.facebook.com/160862723932173/videos/vb.160862723932173/1431728246845608/?type=2&theater

The quality isn't as good as the original, but you can watch last year's fluff piece here  :

The original post for this thread already contains two of Nic's French interviews, and I found two more:

2016 La Capitale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoIekE0pAV0

2016 Nic and Mandy Bujold (a boxer) interview each other: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5d7kfx

Nic and Jackson Payne (a gymnast) had interviewed each other in English, but sadly, the video has been set to private, so none of us can access it. :sad21: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG5qMxzyqCY
