Tanja Odermatt, born February 12, 1997, at Männedorf - canton Zürich, is a Swiss figure skater.

Tanja started skating at the age of two and is currently coached by Linda van Troyen and resides at Dübendorf, Zürich, practicing 25 hours a week.

She is the Reykjavík International Games 2019 champion, and the 2016 Swiss Senior Champion.

Biography & Skating style by Alex D, written in 2014:

My first contact with the Swiss champion, I had in 2014 at Budapest, when she was watching the men's practice and sat next to me. I remember a young lady with a lovely attitude, who was at her first Europeans, and I think a bit overwhelmed by the occasion. Nonetheless, did she skate her Short Program almost flawlessly and left the likes of Sonja Lafuente or Sarah Hecken behind her. Unfortunately, was her 26th place not enough to qualify for the free skate, a silly rule If I may say so.

Tanja herself, is a very expressive skater, with a positive attitude and wonderful spins, turns and steps. Besides that, she is capable of landing the double Axel, Toeloop, Loop and Salchow as triples and knows how to rock a dress and always has a few smiles for the audience.

Tanja NRW Trophy

Tanja competed in the juniors bracket at the NRW Trophy and came 6th. As always, she had an amazing style and charming expression - yet things did not work out as planned.

While she convinced with her fire and expression, the jump elements gave her some trouble. After 11th in the short and a comeback with the 5th best Free, she finished 6th with a combined total of 124.77.

She fought like a lion and came back strong, performing five triples, while gaining several three´s and four´s for her spins and steps. Here is a picture of her, smiling as always :)

As national champion, she also performed at the Europeans, unfortunately was she unable to qualify for the free skate, coming 28th in the short. Her next stop will be the Bavarian Open at Oberstdorf!

Tanja on her road to worlds

Tanja is still working very hard to gain 27 points for her technical elements in the short, a criteria that she must fulfill to be able to go to Boston 2016. At the Bavarian Open, she came 6th in total while gaining 25.41 in TES and if you could have seen her huge smile at the VC, then it would have filled your heart with happiness as well

Unfortunately, was luck not on Tanja´s site, as she had to start very early in her short, at position one, a situation that can cost an athlete a few points, as judges tend to go higher with every group. That being said, she still fought like a lion to fulfill her dream of worlds 2016.

Said dream, could have come true at her last event, the Helmut Seibt Memorial in which she came 12th in total. Sadly, the low numbers love her, as she once again found a number of the first starting group in the draw, now number two - an improvement at least :drama:, while her TES dropped to 24.93 as she had a few issues on her triple loop - double toe and triple toe elements.

One more chance, however, Tanja has this weekend at Budapest where she is competing at the Sportland Trophy. Let´s make sure to give our Swiss darling a big round of encouragement, she can do it!

So, today is the big day for our Swizz darling, Tanja. She had a much better draw this time, as she grabbed number 22, out of 24. Yes, you can say she is an extreme, either a very low number or very high. By picking 22, she will skate very late - round about 23.15 CET local, so shortly before witching hour.

Remember, she will need 27 in TES to be able to go to Boston and I am sure she can do it! Good Luck young lady ;)

Well,

the 5th of March, will definitely not go into history, as the day of my Swizz ladies, as the "Nati" failed to qualify and sadly also my Tanja. Ramona, Lara, Fabienne and Co. lost to Sweden and with it their only chance to go to the Olympics and sadly, also Tanja missed her goal, of Boston.

She gave it all and she bravely fought until the end, but the error on the triple Toe, was very costly and seemed to throw her off, for the rest of the performance too. You could see how disappointed she was, the first time that she didn't smile after one of her programs, but she waved goodbye without shedding any tears, - tears, however, came out at Rotterdam, plenty of them, :sad21:.

While the girls of the national soccer team have to wait four years for their next chance, Tanja will get another next year with Helsinki and honestly, Boston isn´t even that great, who needs a beach if it´s too cold to swim anyways, especially if there are so lovely mountains in Switzerland and that wonderful lake in the middle of Zürich, where you can actually go for a swim without risking to lose your toe to a shark!

On a more serious note, there will be more chances for the 19 years old, I am sure of it. The good and friendly ones, will always get a second chance!

That being said, there is one thing I really like about Tanja, that she was not giving up. You know, there are some skaters who just don´t skate their Free, if the short wasn't good, but with her, she really want´s to skate and show her programs and this she did once again with her Free, which wasn't clean, as she again lost her triple Toe, but also the Sal :( That being said, a very gutsy performance with the triple toe, double Toe, double Loop, and also the double Axel with double Loop and she seemed ok with it and I would say, that she even added a bit more grace to her skate that day.

Heads up Tanja, you gave your best, proud of you!

I added a few videos of Tanja, they show her PB´s and former accomplishments. I did only take official videos, to ensure they stay online, except for Finlandia. ;) This is a work in progress, so it´s not complete ;)

A quick update for Tanja.

Last weekend, the Swizz Nationals took place at Luzern, sadly without our lovely lady from Dübendorf. :( The last years champion, sadly had to pass, due an injury. Let´s wish her a speedy recovery!

Yasmine Yamada, was crowned national champion with a total of six triples over both programs, including a triple toe - triple toe in the short.

Results, can be found here.

I had a brief chat with Tanja a few days ago and she is back in training (on the ice), after her injury from last October. She doesn´t want to rush it, so a competition this season is unlikely, but she is thrilled to compete at Nebelhorn in September. ;)

Let´s wish her all the best!

Quick update,

it seems as if Tanja won´t be at Nebelhorn this season. :( I am unsure what happened (she did not join the Swiss Olympic test event) and will try to get in touch with her, about her whereabouts and how things are going.

Tanja is currently working with her sister on a choreo, I saw a video of it and gave her a big thumps up!

Overall, she is getting better she said, but it is still too soon to make any calls. You can find the video on her facebook page. I would link it, but my facebook skills are terrible. It´s public though, so you should be able to see it.
