I totally fell in love with him during CoR and I thought he deserves a thread. It's my first time starting a thread and English is not my first language, so please feel free to point out my mistakes.

His jumps and spins are both gorgeous and I love his quirkiness

Some nice comments from Plushenko: http://tass.ru/sport/2460287
"I very much liked Mikhail Kolyada. He reminds me of Ilia Kulik in his youth - such light good jumps. I think he has a great prospect. He's a great guy!"
(translated from a Japanese translation I found in a fan blog.)

I heard Tarasova and Finnish commentators gave him a lot of praise, so did B.ESP guys.

BTW, I've never heard of Valentina Chebotareva, his coach, nor Olga Klyushnichenko, his choreographer. I googled them and only appeared in relation to Mikhail. Does anyone know anything about them? I think they're doing a really good job!

TBH I have never heard of them either but I looked up some Russian sites and it seems she is known for not rushing the development of young skaters and putting the SS before big jumps. She works at St Peterburg's Academia of Figure Skating (my understanding it is same rink Mishin's group uses). She is Mikhail's only coach training him from the start (2002) Here is an interview with Chebotareva back in September:

http://www.team-russia2014.ru/article/22473.html

And interview with Mikhail after COR:

Both in Russian I am afraid. I hope Mikhail will get on national team and we will see him at Euro & Worlds. He deserves it.

From the coach's bio at FSkate.ru, I recognized Stanislava Konstantinova's name - she seems to be doing quite well in juniors this season. Though I don't follow junior girls very much, so maybe some of her other skaters are promising as well.

I was not familiar with him before CoR/RC. I liked his "Nightmare before Xmas" program (since I'm partial to Danny Elfman/Tim Burton soundtracks) although he kind of lost me towards the end. He's got good potential and another promising young Russian man.

Thanks! The interviews were really interesting (thanks to Google translate too!). He seems to be a thoughtful, funny guy.
I like her coach ethics very much, and it seems to be working very well. He had the second highest SS at the COR and had a very high PCS overall even though he was the new comer. It sounds more like a North American style than Russian though. It is probably why I feel Mikhail is more or less similar to Jason Brown.

Thanks! Hope she's the next Eteri for Russian boys. I would love to see more Russian male skaters with high quality SS and performance skills.

Kolyada is born to be a performer, one of the great excitements in Rostelecome. He came out of nowhere, but surprised us!

I wrote somewhere that he reminds me of Verner and someone said about Kulik. As British Eurosport guys said, if he brings more quads to his routines, he will be something big in future. I was so amazed by his immense talents. He knows how to entertain audience and to know music. The music for the FS could've been tricky, but he was like a character out of the film directed by Tim Burton. I hope he does well in Nationals, so we can see him often, like Euros and Worlds.

I looked up Michail's protocols and realised that he didn't have flip, it is a bit strange, I think his coach in the interview said that he has all triples. Any ideas?

And what his chances to make a national team? I think Kovtun & Pitkeev are in 100% and the third spot will be tricky - will the fed go with Voronov or give a chance to Kolyada?

All triples.. excluding flip :)

Of course it depends on how they both perform at the Russian Nationals. The Federation wants to have another great young skater, there is no doubt about that. Also a lot depends on what condition Kolyada's quad will be. He said that ATM there is no consistency and he needs some time. But I think if he will show the similar performance at the Nationals, then he will get the third spot. Although there are a lot of pretenders, so who knows

Lets hope the stars will align this season for Michail, he had enough of bad luck in the past. I wish they would give him better costumes though - the present ones are seriously stuck in the Soviet era :)
BTW What's that bizarre story about him withdrawing from the National's LP due to a boot lace issue? I could not help thinking of all the stories I heard about skaters guarding their skates in the changing room with their life. Ha ha

Could this be the Yulia Rainbow Dress of the men's event? http://web.icenetwork.com/photos/157754072 (Fifth slide)

He was skating to music from a Soviet cartoon, so at least I can understand the bright colors and wacky design in this case. The undone glittery bowtie was totally unnecessary, though :disapp: (unless it is some reference to the cartoon...I wouldn't know).

I have no idea who will go to Euros & Worlds. I like all of the Russian guys (a bit less fond of Kovtun, though he's growing on me), so no matter what happens I'll be very sorry for whoever is left out.

^^ I actually thought the combination of a bright shirt with a glittery bow tie was a nice mishmash of fun and classy... (Probably I watch Project Runway too much...)

I saw his protocols from junior competitions and he consistently got e for flips, so probably that's why. I wonder if he is trying to fix it though.

I really want to see him at Euros but the Russian field is so packed... I think if he wins over Sergei at the nats, it's very likely that the fed will choose Mikhail since he has already won twice over Sergei this season at the Rostelecom and the Cup of Russia. (Wait, but I like Sergei too!)

As to the boot lace thing, Japanese wiki says his boot lace snapped, but as I watched the video it didn't look like it was snapped... but it's certain he had some problem with his boot or boot lace.

BTW, you live in Ireland? I used to study there! I love that country ;)

I honestly never saw Mikhail before CoR, but he really won me over with just won event! the SP is fun too, but I mainly love, love, love the LP!

TBH, I was a little annoyed the CoR bronze discussion was "quad vs. everything else" for so many people, because the quad was by far not the only thing that Mik had going for him. His basic SS are really good, his spins are nice and he's a performer :drama:

Now Russia has too many men I want at the big events for their Euros/Worlds spots too :sad21:

PS: I also like the SP bow tie ;)
