Could be both, in any case doctors as a rule want a patient to be free of an acute infection for this type of surgery, that's why I suspect it's a month away and not done now. We don't know what surgery exactly, it could be widening of nasal passages for example, but the goal of any surgery is to improve the flow from sinuses. It could be rather invasive, could have complications and might not work in the end so I for one do not blame Mika for not rushing into it in the spring/summer when he was feeling better, yes the second stay in hospital with another puncture was an indication but I guess their reckoning was that the first one didn't work because he didn't rest after as he should have done (heroics at RN - what's else to say) and that that time round with proper rest it would work.
I personally was in doubt about it the minute I heard that he went to Bali for a holiday. A month in a Black Sea heath resort specialising in treatment of this kind of condition might have done the trick but not a partying holiday with a jet lag, unfamiliar food etc...Understandably he wanted to enjoy himself, which is fair enough but a valuable time & opportunity for a recovery once again was missed :scratch2:

Now I think the only sensible thing he could do is to cut his losses so to speak , and say a goodbye to this season. The surgery will do nothing if he rushes back to training he needs at least 2 months after that. I do hope he understands that.

I myself feel like for me too, the season is over before it even started - first the news that there will be no figure skating on BESP anymore, at least on the TV - the end of the era! and then Mika's illness...I just can't get into a mood and haven't watched any comps yet :(

Actually spending a month in a warm place is kinda good for his heath, especially before the surgery.
And since I heard another rumor that his wife is pregnant, so maybe they wanna celebrate their coming baby and went on their second honey moon this year, who knows.

You misunderstood me I was talking about their holiday in May. A warm climate is good in general but not enough when you are really sick and spend there only a couple of weeks

And its good to know a cheer project from him is going to be done.

Alas, this weekend brings more sadness - it would have been his first GP :( instead it is his op next Wednesday :sad21:

I've come across reading the comments section on the sports.ru though I can't vouch for this info: someone there claimed to have seen Mika at the vet clinic with a friend and a cat (not clearly was it his cat or that of his friend :)) what is important that he looked well and in good spirits. As we heard nothing for a long time now I thought I'd share this with you all...

And of course wishing him the very best luck for next week and speedy recovery

So, according to Mika's official group the op went well. He needs to stay away from training for another month. Only than the team will start to make plans how to go further.

At this moment all i want for him is to get well and get power for the next season. Whatever we get in this season from him will be for me just a bonus without much expectations.

Well, I said from the start that his season was likely over, and it won't do him any good to come back before the right time. He can also reevaluate the amount of work he needs to put in to come in shape to compete. Better to work towards the next season if anything.

So glad of the news, not knowing anything was hard!

The first step to recovery is made, hopefully he won't rush into a full training in December either. Yes, I think to skip the season would be a sensible thing to do but will they do' sensible'?
I still think that he's got a small chance if he goes to the Russian Cup Final in February but that will largely depend on how other Russians will do at Euros, won't it?

Sometimes it is not a bad thing to take a break and process things in a different way, to look at how he approaches competitions mentally, because we all know even when he was healthy the nerves were his biggest problem, maybe this unplanned time off will actually help him in that regard. He was competing non stop for 4 full seasons after all and things do happen for a reason I hope he can see it that way...
Having said that looking at how men perform so far this season it is not easy not to feel totally frustrated - to do well on GP and get to GPF has never been easier oh well ...

It warms my heart after a bit of a low point after waiting for season to start and on pins and needles with what would happen. Was soooo disappointed at first. Now I can be a little more philosophical and hope he comes back next year. It does grate a bit as stated in above that performances haven’t been exactly spectacular this season and if on Misha may have been able to take advantage. Oh well. I’m out $60 on NBCSport. I decided I would root for Shoma in lieu of Kolyada. Oof. Well, it will be fascinating to see how Shoma will handle the coaching situation and if he can get it together this season. Always love an underdog.

Wishing him all the best! It's always frustrating when a skater has to step away for health reasons - most of all for the skater, I imagine -, but hopefully he can come back strong when he's fully healed.

Alexander Kogan of Russian Fed doesn't rule out Mika's participation in the RusNats:

https://rsport.ria.ru/20191112/1560839809.html

''He hasn't started on-ice training yet, the earliest we might see him -at RusNats but I won't say it is definite. No need to rush his recovery''

Mixed feelings about it, glad the Fed is giving him a bypass to the Nationals but indeed it is too soon even if he starts training in a couple weeks.
If they could give him that 3rd spot at Euro but I can imagine the outcry it would cause!

Even if he starts training in two weeks, he's lost way too much time to recover well enough by Euros. The other russian guys are doing well enough to hold onto three spots, and it's better if Misha takes his time recovering, because he's well known to not do that.

I also think it would be better for Mika to regroup this season and instead of rushing into compettions to take time to stabilze his quads. Perhpas now is the time to go for 2 months to Raf or other jump-coach, go to Lambiel and make some great programs.... His programs are not ready this season, he didn't get the chance to polish them in competitions... it is very risky to come to the Nats.

But Mika oft does stupid strategy , so i won't wonder to have to watch him struggle at Nats, sigh....

Unfortunately, now when he's got plenty of time on his hands to do all those things, money could be a stumbling block, the last season was not great prize money wise with nothing coming in this year, so I doubt very much he can afford going to Raf or Lambiel unless some sponsors step in... My guess that RusFed not particularly invested in Mika at the moment with both Samarin & Aliev doing well enough, so I doubt they would pay for an oversees training camp for Mika. The time when he could command his conditions with the Fed was after Milan and that ship sailed alas.
I was thinking a lot lately about his coaching situation seeing how poorly Stanislava has been doing so far this season and I can't help feeling that Mika's loyalty in the end did no favours to Valentina. Had he left her at the right moment she would have retained a very solid reputation as a coach capable of bringing students to a world class level. Now when it is painfully obvious that she is not capable of making the champions of them at least where mental preparation is concerned her reputation as a coach suffers as a result. May be I am too harsh but it what I feel ...
Hope we will get some update on his health soon!

Unfortunately, no news at all, I guess he is not back to ice training yet otherwise some of Russian fans'd seen him at his rink and reported back. Maybe the recovery takes longer than anticipated by doctors - every case is different. I would say him competing at RusNats is highly unlikely.

Or he might be preparing quietly not wanting to attract any attention. Sure there are people who know - the Fed, his team but they don't seem to be in a hurry to part with information... we just have to be patient I guess
