Unacceptable. Completely unacceptable, how ridiculous. If he wants to skate in shows instead of Nationals then there's a solution for that: he turns pro. Otherwise, the competitions come first. Demanding the rescheduling of your skate just so you can go skate in a show is not on and the federation should not have allowed it.

Can you imagine the uproar if Yuzuru did that at Japanese Nationals, or Kovtun, or Jason or Max or someone? It does not happen. If NHK and the Senior Men at Australian Nationals had clashed, the answer would have been, Sorry Brendan, you will get a bye to 4CCs/Worlds selection, but you won't be National Champion this year.

Oh, get over it. Deniss still had to compete, he wasn't given an automatic bye. If that happened, you might have a point, but it didn't. There were so few skaters here, do you think the schedule mattered in the slightest? It didn't. If anything, if Deniss had skated right before or after the other 2 guys, the vast difference in their levels of talent & ability would have been even more glaring. This wasn't Japanese or Russian Nationals. Not even comparable.

I hope you got more upset about Plushy's "special treatment" before Sochi than you are about this tiny Fed's competition schedule.

And one last point - the Latvian Fed is not wealthy. It would be absolutely stupid of them to prevent their very best skater from earning money he desperately needs for training. It's part of a long-term investment & if that's "special treatment" to you, so be it. Whether you like him or not, Deniss put Latvia on the skating map, & his continued success will only help other Latvian skaters. You think all those Spanish skaters could afford to train abroad now, if not for Javier? Would Korea be developing such a strong program if not for Yuna?

Can someone explain how Deniss was scored? I did not see him skate the FS. I understand fully the necessity for points to be Europeans eligible but in this instance how did it work? It just seems that whenever I think I am beginning to get a grasp of this sport, something comes up that leaves me baffled. I chose to pay attention to Latvian nationals because I figured fewer skaters, small country, live stream- I could learn something. Quite the contrary- I have more questions now.

Also, I think it's jumping the gun saying that someone is incapable of certain accomplishments. Again, I am the farthest thing from an expert on this sport but I have seen underdogs do great things. As I said in a previous post, I liked Lukas' sp at Boston Nationals. I don't think he skated very well in Latvia and I certainly don't like anybody using excuses but, if he is indeed just returning to the scene after over a year or recovering from injury then I think it was a nice return.

I guess I'm just a softie- I have so much respect for what these skaters do. All of them. Negative commentary just turns me off- I find it disrespectful.

Now to look for the next Nationals that I can watch- and hopefully get some more insight into this sport.

Have a great week everyone!

All Nationals tend to have inflated scores. Glebs's ISU personal best is 122.45, Lukas's is 135.61. The scores here don't count for Euros as Nationals is not an ISU competition, & anyway Deniss already met the threshold.

I have heard others say that Nationals tend to have inflated scores....naive question but, what's the purpose of that?

How do you know that Deniss "demanded" it? How do you know it was his idea in the first place? As far as I know, no official information was given regarding this, so for all we know it may not have even been Deniss' idea. As silverfoxes mentioned, the Latvian Fed is not wealthy (Latvia as a country is not wealthy, actually), and I'm sure they are very supportive of their best skater and the opportunities he is offered. If the show had been planned very far in advance, it probably wouldn't have been an easy thing to pull out of. You shouldn't be so quick to judge on something we have little information about. Besides, it's not like skating separately gave him any kind of advantage whatsoever over the other skaters.
