Canadian ladies figure skater Selena Zhao was born May 10, 1998 in Kirkland, Washington. She is the 2015 Canadian Junior Champion.

In honor of the upcoming Canadian Championships, I wanted to start a Fan Fest for my favorite lesser-known Canadian lady, Selena Zhao! I first saw her at the U.S. International Classic in the FS and I was very impressed. I hope she can place on or near the podium at Nationals & be sent to Junior Worlds and possibly 4CC!

Belatedly posting Selena's very well-written essay from Nov 2017, which reflects on the "parallel universe" of her present life as Harvard student and of her past life as elite skater and Olympic hopeful. She obviously cherishes both.

Although it is not new, I came across it today for the first time, when I was adding links to a post for the academic thread in The Edge.

The whole thing is absolutely worth reading. Here is just a small taste (emphasis not added):

… My head is reeling from the confusion of how I can spend my weekend holed up in my room reading political science journal articles while my friends are training for the most important competitive season of their lives, hoping against hope to make that Olympic team. It’s a jarring feeling.

Nowadays, most people I see and talk to don’t really know that I skated, and those who do sure don’t know what “I used to compete a lot” really means. It’s definitely on me — I don’t really bother trying to explain anymore. How do you even try to put it into words? “I don’t remember my life without it.” “Nothing else has played a larger role in shaping who I’ve become.” And yet skating is a negligible part of how I spend my time on campus these days. Pushed to the wayside whenever an assignment comes up. Even when people do bring it up I usually just brush it off as an irrelevant aspect of my past. I’d much rather be defined by what I’m currently doing. ...
