Julian Zhi Jie Yee, born 26 May 1997 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a figure skater who represents Malaysia in men's singles. He was the men's silver medalist at a 2015 ISU Challenger comp (Denkova Staviski Cup). He is the 2019 and 2017 Southeast Asia Games champion in figure skating, and the six time Malaysian senior champion. He is currently coached by Michael Hopfes and Doug Leigh in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

His original goal was to become the first Winter Olympian representing Malaysia, a goal he achieved in 2018! He also aims to put Malaysia on the map in the figure skating world.

Yee was also a member of the National short track team, but now focuses solely on figure skating. Yee is the first figure skater to represent Malaysia in an ISU Senior World Championships (in 2016). He is also the first Malaysian figure skater to compete at the Olympic Winter Games (2018). His brother Ryan Zhi Jwen, who is two years older than Julian, competed in figure skating at the international level, too.

Excerpts from Julian's essay on his GoFundMe page:
My name is Julian Yee, or some of you may heard of me as Julian Zhi-Jie YEE. ... Since the age of 4, I've dedicated my life to the ice. I am a home grown Figure Skater ... My ultimate goal is ... the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. I am now only 1 step away from achieving this goal as I have already secured a place in the qualifiers in 2017 (Worlds).
... I have been training for short stints in China, South Korea and Canada as I cannot afford proper long term training. Most of the time, I train by myself without a coach, in public rinks.
.... However to get to the Olympics, home training is not enough. I need the guidance and expertise of experienced coaches overseas in order to step up my game, and this is beyond my parents' means. My yearly training and competition expenses are approaching $40,000 a year, which does not include basic living or other expenses. ... This particular sport is still very new in Malaysia ... it is not designated as a core sport in the country. Due to this, I do not receive sufficient funds from the authorities. One of my aims is to promote the sport and put my country on the Figure Skating map.
I am currently ranked 55 in the world and I have been National Champion 3 years in a row. I have already qualified for the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships as well as the Worlds Championship, not to mention being the first to do so from Malaysia. ....
I believe I can be the First ever Malaysian to qualify for the Winter Olympics as I have already qualified Malaysia an entry to the Youth Winter Olympics in 2016. ... Please do support and join me on the Road to be the First Malaysian Winter Olympian.

Okay, I had a hard time to find his fanfest because when searching, I put his full name such as "Julian Zhi Jie Yee",
and silly me, I gave the OP a thumb-up already. I forgot I saw this one.

Anyway, he impressed me at Worlds, his SP and FS were delightful, so I was relieved that he could make it to FS.

Good to hear that. He has his own distinctive style and charms to entertain audience, so I hope he develops more as a skater and makes it to the 2018 Olympics. Has he practiced quads and ever landed them in practice or any competition?

Hie everyone! Thanks for the thumbs up and support ! I'll be editing and adding video links to this thread as I go along, so please excuse any missing links and messy layout at the moment, arrgghh! Feel free to add more Julian-related stuff if you find them and wants to share 'em :)

Call me ignorant but I suspected till now that he is just another skater who grew up in USA but happens to represent other country partially because of his ancestry. It turns out that I was wrong and makes me even more appreciative that he's so good despite not coming from a country and nation in which this sport is popular and having worse facilities. That tells a lot of how talented he is.

added a nice podcast interview with Julian from a local radio station to the top post - some insight on how he got into the sport, how is it like being an athlete of a relatively obscure sport in Malaysia, training, inspiration, etc. A recommended listen!

Yay, a Julian thread!!! I absolutely fell in love with this guy's skating last year. And the amazing work he's had to put in as a guy not from a traditional skating country. The 4sal in the video looks beautiful. With his talent and a seemingly engaging personality, I think he can do a lot to put Malaysia on the skating map. I'll be rooting for him at 4CC!

I really hope he'll get a chance to show off a good quad (or two) at the competition. He does have a charming personality on the ice and I like that he's also placing good emphasis on the performance side of figure skating.
Will you be seeing 4CC live? Please do a on site review or commentary if you do and if you can?
