How did the short programs factor in?

So I'm confused. How did the short programs factor in to the competition? Was it just for prize money, or the the 60 whatever points get added into the scores from the free skates?

ETA: I meant to post this in the TCC general thread. I can't figure out how to delete it though. Sorry!

The short program was a separate competition.
