It is more than likely that he will be growing more in the next few years, fingers crossed they work through it.

Stephen was listed at 154cm (about 5'0") last year. So yah, while not 7 inches, it's still pretty substantial. He's likely still growing too. It also looks like most of the growth happened after Jr. Worlds in March, likely in the summer, since I don't remember him being as tall as now. So it's also within a relatively short period.

Thx for the info. The long legs definitely give him the appearance of being taller than 5'4". Reworking the technique takes time too, and certainly more than 2 months.

JGP Lake Placid Men medal ceremony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzXgi9F5rZg Stephen looked pretty glum in that video. :eek:hwell: I wish I could tell him what I told Joseph Phan three weeks ago in person: "Please don't be too hard on yourself." :console:

How did it happen that Stephen was not the smallest, but the tallest on the podium? :scratch2:

That image is of the Top 3 after the short program. For the over-all podium, Stephen is shorter than Gleb Lutfullin. However, if he eventually does become tall, you can blame it on whatever mysterious substance is in Canadian drinking water which causes our men's singles skaters to grow tall. :p (Only Keegan Messing was spared because he was born in Alaska, but the other top Canadian guys who are over 18---which is the age of majority in Canada---are no less than 5'11"! Phan's ISU bio hasn't been updated yet, but he was 5'11" when I met him at the Quebec Summer Championships.)

He looks great with that Californian tan and very bright hair.

:agree:

I wish his skating has been looking equally great, but he's still in transition, without the doubt.

I absolutely love his SP! Compared to last season, he definitely moves with greater speed and smoothness across the ice, and his presentation skills have noticeably improved. He's clearly still adapting to his new environment, so I know we can't expect him to deliver great performances all the time, but I think Stephen is on the right path to develop into the skater that I dreamed that he could be.

I'm catching up on uploading a few videos that I've neglected during the tail end of last season due to my health issues.

2019 Final Look at Nationals fluff: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7jlc0z I don't believe this was broadcast on TV, so it's bonus material.

Btw, it was quite sweet seeing how supportive Raf was. He gave Stephen a smile when he came off the ice and was being all around encouraging in the K&C. I always had the impression he was a strict coach, so it was nice to see him giving Stephen support.

Every coach walks a thin line between being too soft and being too hard on his students. Being tough in training is OK, but in competition, out in the open, a coach plays a different role. A talented teenage boy shooting up in his growth spurt needs a different kind of encouragement to keep him interested in the sport, when so many other interesting things (like girls) start playing in his mind. If Raf manages to keep Stephen in ice skating, the hardest part of his job has been completed.

Besides, in this television and internet age, a coach giving his student the cold shoulder will immediately be singled out in the media and social media in particular.

I've made his JGP Zagreb LP available at 59 frames per second (the one on YouTube is 29 fps), in case some of you like the smoother graphics from a higher frame rate.

I wasn't able to do the same for his short programs, unfortunately, because the full JGP Lake Placid Men SP video wasn't at 59 fps, and I can't seem to find the link for the JGP Zagreb Men SP (so either Ted Barton didn't upload it, or most likely something along the lines of "This video contains content from WMG, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds" prevents me from accessing the file).

The word on TSL is that Stephen was injured but he's back on the ice now. However he lost a lot of training time and was therefore not ready for Nationals yet.

So according to IFS Magazine, Stephen bruised his right ankle bone, and it got worse and he had to withdraw from Volvo Cup and nationals. But he is fine now and has gone through another growth period, and is five foot five? I'm happy to hear that he is going to compete so soon, and go to jr worlds as well but that would mean the jr national champion doesn't get to go. He's fine now, thankfully, so good luck Stephen! https://www.ifsmagazine.com/skate-canada-defers-naming-worlds-team/

I had requested a practice report on Stephen on the Bavarian Open thread, and Pandicorn was kind of enough to share this observation:

Stephen practiced mostly steps. Some clean combinations and 2A. At the end also one 3A.

All hail our Gogo Overlord! Stephen got a Personal Best SP score of 81.18 and is the winner of this segment. He's noticeably taller, but why did he get rid of the elegant SP costume he had before? The striped shirt looks like it's from a cartoon prison.

Wow, I am SO impressed by Gogo Overlord! To be completely honest I was surprised he didn't withdraw, and even then I thought he was going to be a hot mess because of growth and a major injury and all that, but no! Scoring OVER 80 in the short, and a two point PCS improvement from JGP Lake Placid and four points from JGPF 2018! Idk how I feel about the new costume, you can definetely tell he looks up to Nathan, not in a bad way though. The gloves attracted my attention, so idk about that. There is no way he is ONLY 162 cm, he looks at least 168!

I feel like maybe in the light of these adversities and injury, Stephen is being a little less hard on himself, or at least it seems so. He seemed happy (what a cute smile!) and so he should be, a wonderful performance with great improvement. How did he improve so much while injured?

Glad to see that he was happy, and I love watching him skate and smile :)

I think he has this, with the 10 point lead but never know what happens. Will he jump quad? Watching that 3A entry had my heart going and I think considering the injury, we should be blessed with a 3A and maybe a 4S.

Thanks for the great video. He has improved and grown so much. Maybe the first costume is not long enough for him since he's grown.
I agree that this reminds me of Nathan seeing Nadia with him in the kiss and cry. Her program for Nathan in the 2017 season is similar to this and I like it for him.
