For those who aren't familiar, Catherine Carle from Central Ontario is very strong technically, and has landed 3-3 combos in competition. Catherine will lead off the second flight for the SP.

Nice pre-event chat by commentators Ted Barton and Debbie Wilkes....

So great to bring this to novice competition.

Rosalie Vincent of QC landed a 3T-3T< combo. Ted noted a great deal of technical ability. She's currently 2nd.

Me too mate. :)

Catherine with a good skate. Did a 3 turn out of the 3S but still managed to to do a 2T. 3Lo and 2A looked excellent. She's in first right now with 41.88 points.

Look out for Emma B from BC.

Catherine Carle of CO takes the lead with 41.88. Did a 3-2 combo, but a clean performance, and overall better than her SP at Challenge.

Ted commented on her amazingly fast final spin. For my part, I note as I did at Challenge that we are seeing several novice women with high quality, well centred spins.

TGee you and I posted seconds apart. :)

I'm going to come back later for more. Hope these ladies land on their landing foot and not on their butts in the mean time. :)

Emma Bulawka's 3S didn't really get going....only got credit for a 2S and had a fall. But a fairly nice 3T-2T and 2A....ends up with 38.02 and 6th at this point. Look to see her pull up in her FS.

--------------

Overall, am noting a fair bit of difference in placements from Challenge. Some skaters who had difficult SPs there have pulled up and vice versa. In particular, a number of skaters from QC have strengthened their TES.

ETA Kudos to all the novice women, especially for pushing for higher technical elements at this level.

And a special shout out to the final skater Alanna Liu for her 3Lo-2T combo. Ted noted it was the only 3Lo of the event.

At the end of the first flight of the freeskate, we are beginning to see some reordering. Some of the skater's who had unexpectedly challenging SPs are recovering.

Sandrine Bouchard of QC has moved to first place at this point with 68.91 in her FS, which included 3 jump combos [plus one non-counted zayak]. Really, appreciate how she worked to recover despite a rough start to the competition.

Alanna Liu of SK, who was the only one to attempt the more difficult 3Lo+2T combo in the SP, pulled it off with positive GOE in her FS. Her FS was 64.68 overall, which moved her to second for the moment. Kudos for going for it!

Another skater who had a rough start yesterday, Rosalie Vincent of QC has come in with a FS of 76.03, making the 3S+2T combo that eluded her yesterday. Overall score of 111.69 puts her out front at this point.

Back with the final flight. BC/YK's Emma Bulawka pulled off the kind of skate we'd hoped to see from her yesterday....84.66 a very solid score for this level....no 3-3 combo, but positive GOE on both the 3S+2T and 3T+2T, rounded out by 3 level 4 spins and a level 4 StSq. In first place as the last flight rolls out.

Congrats to Catherine Carle! Broke her own record for novice ladies she set at Challenge. Bulawka also did well.

Now I hope some of these girls get to do an international this spring. It would be a pity not to see them skate again.

Catherine Carle delivered a 91.85 FS for an overall score of 133.73. No 3-3 combos, but a solid 2A-3T combo, as well as 3Lo+2T, among many solid jump and spin elements. Emma Bulawka of BC retained the silver, and Élodie Adsuar of QC took bronze with a well-fought FS.

Hope that Ontario, BC and Quebec can find the resources to send them to Europe for an ISU advanced novice international competition this spring.
