Good practices had by all on Monday. Should be a very good competition.

Full results from Challenge last December are found here.

As Mango notes, three BC/YK women swept the podium in this discipline.....They are split across all three flights for today's SP by the random draw.

1 Olivia Gran BC/YK 161.52
2 Emily Bausback BC/YK 158.52
3 Mckenna Colthorp BC/YK 151.57
4 Aurora Cotop CO 146.51
5 Amanda Tobin WO 140.86

Also want to note that, while Justine Brasseur is out with an injury, two other pairs girls, Evelyn Walsh and Hannah Dawson will be competing in this event. Hannah's partner Christian Reekie is recovering from an infection, so they did not compete in the Junior Pairs. However, Evelyn will be skating not only her SP solo in the third flight, but her pairs FS later in the afternoon. Cheers for another multi-event competitor.:hap10:

Aurora Cotop had a great, clean performance with a 3T+3T.

Emily Bausback put a great performance out as well. Only a hiccup on the 3Lz landing, had to do a 3 turn out of it to get speed for 3T. Ted admits she's a technical skate but has improved her sensitivity to music. Mentioned she didn't make it out of sectionals to Challenge as a pre-novice in 2014. And now she's a podium contender.

Semi Won had tough mistakes - falls on the 3Lz and 3Lo. But a beautiful Beillmann. Debbi says she looked scared. She had a similar performance at sectionals. I think she can bounce back next season. She's got the drive for that.

In addition to upping the tech, program components and performance qualities, so much of Juniors is learning resilience in competition.

This is where the lack of exposure to the ISU international circuit in Europe really disadvantages Canadians. A couple of early season cross-border joint SC/USFSA events just doesn't seem to cut it anymore.

Love how Debbi Wilkes is drawing attention to the quality of spins, and the need for skaters to balance attention to excellence on both spins and jumps.

McKenna Colthrop of BC/YK just had a bit of a tough skate, but still beautifully skated to Somewhere over the Rainbow.

Olivia Gran not having her best skate. Fell on the 3Lz. Had to bring down the free leg fast after the 2A. Will have to see if she can recover in the FS.

Despite the fall on the combo, I really liked Alison Schumacher's SP. Beautiful choreography by Yuka Sato, and a beautiful performance by Alison.

Fairly large spread [10.0 pts] across the top five. Will be interesting to see if there is significant movement in the FS.

Thinking that the push to get all the triples but 3A, and include the higher BV jumps and combos in the SP is putting some of them at risk of developing the resilience and consistency they will need to move up.

Clearly, the incentives for Novices to increase their tech [more difficult triples, 3-3 combos] are needed, but as we've seen from our top 3 senior ladies, resilience and consistency are also something that need to be developed earlier.

TGee many of the top junior ladies have done an international event. They should be building resilience in addition to properly landing all their triples and 3-3 combinations. I'm sure the BC girls will up their tech next season and go for 3T in their jump combos. Sarah did that towards the end of last year. And Olivia right now does a 2A+3T, as does Aurora.

Talented young girls, I see.
At this shampionships Junior Ladies are much better than at previous, when only Sarah Tamura was not too bad.

Thanks for joining us AlexRus. Really welcome interest in and perspectives on Canadian skaters. :thank:

Hope you can stay with us for the Junior Pairs. Evelyn Walsh [who was 10th in the SP] will be skating again in the Junior Pairs FS which starts at 3:15 pm / 15:15h EST. She landed a Th3Lz in the SP yesterday.
