For me, this is the hardest event to predict of the WJC. Pairs, ladies and dance seem to have about three or four teams that are clear favourites to medal, and of course anything can happen, but for me there is a bigger group of men who could be on the podium.

I think I'm kinda rooting for Daniel Samohin to win this, I feel so bad for him and what hapoened at Euros and I'd like for him to get some validation. It's not gonna be easy, though, since he never managed to pull off a clean FS this season. I think he can do a clean SP without quads, but a clean FS?

So, the podium's going to be between: Jun Hwan Cha, Aliev, Samarin, Zhou, Petrov, Krasnozhon, Sadovsky, Samohin. I think there are 4 candidates for gold: Cha, Aliev, Samarin and, uhhhh, Samohin because I want him to be.

Vincent just won the Bavarian Open with a score of 247.81, and he's pretty consistent. He isn't my favorite by any means, but he's definitely a strong candidate for gold.

Since quads aren't allowed in the SP all the top skaters should be fairly close to each other going into the FS. That means whoever has the strongest FS will probably win.

I still belive Cha will medal, even gold. It's good if Zhou is a quad Monster ala Nathan and has the 4lutz, but Jun still have a chance to pull a Hanyu and snag the gold from Vincent neck right?

Because the start orders haven't been released yet, we're supposed to be using the pre-event thread if we want to discuss the guys: http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?63033-2017-Junior-Worlds-Preevent-Men-s-Chat

When it comes to the Canadian men, I'm surprised that you list Sadovsky, but then leave off Nadeau, who's the reigning Junior Worlds silver medalist. You never know what can happen at a competition, of course, but between the two of them, I'd say that the latter is more likely to medal than the former. Even though Nicolas missed the entire JGP season because of an ankle injury, he finished 4th at Canadians while Roman placed 9th. Moreover, Roman wasn't able to compete at the Bavarian Open a few weeks ago due to an unspecified injury, so it's unlikely that he'll be in peak condition for this event.

I was going by their best scores this season, but you're right, Nadeau turned in a respectable 224 last year. To be fair, though, I don't really consider Sadovsky a solid candidate for the podium, but rather a dark horse.

Cha, Aliev and Samarin are head to head this season. Only Samohin is up there with them with last season's score but, well, the problem is that it's not this season's score. But then again somebody is bound to bomb. Tee-hee! I love surprises, but I hope it will be Samohin skating well.

His FS at BO was a mess... 4lz is a great weapon, but with the SP restrictions and one fewer elent in FS he doesn't have the edge. But yeah, he does seem to be in the running for gold.

It seems that Vincent is not strong enough to handle 3 Quads in long program yet. He’s 16 and still in the growing process. But he’s getting better and better throughout the season. His 4 Sal is stable now. He’s got the silver at nationals and just landed 4 Lutz successfully this month. I think he has a big chance to get the gold at the World Junior.

Wow, I guess based on two comps the Vincent Zhou train will be leaving the station, but I don't get it. As an American, of our three juniors I'd much rather see Andrew T. or Alexei than Vincent, and I'm not sure that Vincent is *way* far ahead of them just based on Nats. Didn't Alexei make the JGPF, and not Vincent, after all? :scratch2: but anyway, go team!

And slay Nic Nadeau, too. :hap10: managed to take two horrible music cuts/choices this year and last year in his LPs and make them totally engaging!

You can throw Alexei into the mix. I think a lot of these guys have shown a lot of growth this season, with many of them putting in much stronger performances at Nationals than they did months ago on the JGP (or last summer regarding Nicolas). Anyway, Aliev may still win; but I feel like this field is much more exciting than the JGPF. Vincent, Nicolas, Samarin, Cha, & Samohin all put in very strong performances at Nationals. Scores aren't comparable, but the skating itself showed a lot of improvement for most of these guys.

I love Cha's SP. (One of my favorite short programs of the season). As far as the LPs, though, I'll be rooting for anyone who has a great skate.

I have been a cheerleader for all three U.S. men and hope they all will do well.

For the record, re the 2016 JGPs back in Sep-Oct and JGPF in Dec, Vincent's results compare very favorably to Alex's.
Krasnozhon's scores:
223.60 Czech
211.18 Slovenia
208.85 JGPF
Zhou:
226.39 Japan
213.92 Estonia
Vincent was the first alternate for the JGPF. He (instead of Aliev) would have earned the sixth slot if the first tie-breaker had been scores instead of placements.

And I don't think anything can be guaranteed "just based on Nats," but at the same time, I find the scores there from Jan hard to ignore.
Vincent 263.03 as a Senior.
Alex 211.05 as a Junior.

Zhou had the 4th highest season best and 3rd highest average score on the JGP but his events were more competitive than some of the others and so he didn't qualify based on placements.

I also don't find Vincent very compelling to watch, but I think he would have easily made the JGPF if not for the hard fall where he hit his head on the ice in Tallinn. It can't be easy to get through the rest of program after that. I am not sure, but I think he might have hit a rut in the ice, which would have been purely bad luck that could happen to anyone. Anyway, his season overall has been much better than Alexei or Andrew's.

I only hope skaters, especially Aliev and Samarin, are gonna be a bit more consistent than last year. Everything fell apart in the FS then, although I was very happy for Nicolas! I'm not confident enough to take part in the predictions game, as I was only following particular skaters, rather than the entire competition this season, but I'm
routing for the Russian boys and Cha (Team Orser) of course. I wish Roman the best of luck, but I can't see him among the top 5, Nicolas is difficult to predict after missing most of the season, but hope he is rising again to the occasion. Vincent has been scoring great this season and with Daniel not there, he's the one to watch. Good luck to all the lads!

Daniel is back on the list. It seems that was just an error.
