In a performance both charming and chilling, Russia’s Evgenia Medvedeva was foot perfect to win the Ladies short program at the 2017 World Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Skating to “River Flows in You” by Lorenzo de Luca and “The Winter” by Balmorhea, the defending world champion cranked out solid jumps to earn a score of 79.01, including a perfect 10 for performance.

The two-time European champion landed a triple flip-triple toe loop combination with one arm over the head on the flip and two arms over the head on the toe loop, a triple loop and a double Axel with one arm over her head. The program was highlighted by a delightful foot work sequence and all jump elements executed in the back half of the routine.
“Figure skating is a sport that combines art and athleticism,” the Russian said about her balance of the two requirements for success in the sport. “The athletic part for the technical side, you need power and also strength, and you also need emotionally to be strong. And it’s like fifty-fifty with technical and artistic, because if you have the technique and no components, and if you have the components and no technique, you don’t get anywhere.”

Biggest surprise: Karen's placement, which she fairly earned.
Big surprise: Ashley's placement, since she mostly hit her levels and got full rotation credit on everything. It was probably a disadvantage to skate after Evgenia and Gabby because they make her jumps look far less impressive.

Overall, it was a very well-skated event, with everyone in the top 12 giving very respectable performances.

Biggest surprise was Xiangning Li. I've never watched her before, loved her speed on the spins, great 3ltz, she looked solid here.

biggest surprise was probably Karen's performance

also surprised by how Ashley scored so low, also thought Carolina would have scored higher

Overall, the placements were pretty in line with what we've seen this season across short porgrams--it will be an interesting free!

Very high quality of competition today  I expect well see some changes in places 2-8, but all of the ladies should be proud of what they put out today. Lookin' good, Canada! Kudos to your ladies :)

Karen, for me, had one of the best performances, but her 3T was definitely UR upon replays and the tech panel was quite lenient. 8th would have been more fair. However, I'm really pleased to see her in the final flight because people were sharpening their knives and she sent the haterade right back at them with that SP. As disastrous as 4CC was, Karen got her SP together and delivered, which is a confidence booster to her and makes a statement to those who doubted her.

And yes, it was a very well-skated event. I was also impressed by how many triple lutzes were being attempted and how few falls there were. Even if the tech specialist was lenient on the scrutinized details like edge calls and URs, the skaters still performed well, and the judging was fairly accurate (well, as much as ISU judging panels can be accurate these days :p ).

It was pretty surprising to me how low Ashley scored and placed for a clean skate. It seems she is losing lots of momentum from the judges right now, for whatever reason. At U.S Nationals she also skated cleanly and lost to Chen who both had lower base values, and mistakes. With higher PCS too. It seems the consensus that is forming is that her technical elements are weaker quality than other girls even done cleanly, and not meriting much GOE. Atleast that is what her recent protocals are suggesting.

It is super exciting to see the Canadian girls 2nd and 3rd. I hope they can hang on, the long will be a much bigger test for both. I am pretty sure the silver and bronze will now come out of some combination of Osmond, Daleman, and Pogo, with Wagner and Kostner both missing the final flight. I just cant imagine Chen or Sotskova medaling unless it is a real messy event.

there were so many highlights, most ladies even the less known ones really skated very well!

Laurine Lecavelier has a wonderful style and performance. too bad about the fall.

Rika Hongo's gutsy sp to fiery music was the best she could hope for considering her injuries. Loved her performance!

Zijun Li exquisite sp was a highlight too and I'll be rewatching that skate on youtube later. Sad that she was one of the few the judges dinged on UR as her UR was a lot less obvious than that of many other skaters yesterday. I fear with no love from the judges she's going to retire soon and this will be her last big stage.

Kaetlyn's sp: As I've said this season before, when Kaetlyn is on, she's (in my opinion) the best ladies skater today. Her sp should hold the WR in my eyes.

Karen's performance to golden pond was very beautiful and exquisite too. A rare treat to see her skate that well on the big stage.

I liked Wakaba - that's my biggest surprise. In fact, she was good - she has made a good progress in presentation. Her SP was enjoyable. Another surprise is Ivett Tott from Hungary. Negative surprise is lowballed Ashley.

Overall it is even clearer that there is Evgenia Medvedeva and everyone else. She is just at another level. And her combo with the added rippon is perfection. It was a good event and silver/bronze is for grabs. Objectively, silver should go to Anna: her LP this season is a masterpiece. I was nearly crying when I saw it live at CoR. No one else has anything close to that. But she should be clean. Bronze should go to one of the Canadians. Caren and Ashley should keep their cool: the 3 spots business is quite plausible. Not for the Japanese, though. It means that no Mao in Korea if Satoko is healthy. The second spot will be a cat fight between Wakaba, Marin, and Mai. That's my thoughts overall.

Good surprise - Karen 3 spots for US - attainable
Bad surprise - Mai 3 spots for Japan - impossible = no Mao at the Olympics :sad4:

Probably so, but if Mao can't place in the top 2 at her nationals, she has zero chance at an Olympic medal. If she could just regain the form she showed 18 months ago at the Japan Open, she can accomplish anything.

I dont neccessarily agree. Skaters have been 3rd at their Nationals and won the Olympics before (eg Sarah Hughes) or been widely regarded only 3rd in their country and won major events.

Anyway I think Mao's problems go well beyond focus at this point Her jump technique has become more dodgy gradually as the years have gone on, and it is really past the point of no return, and she is unlikely to be able to fix it at turning 28.
