(Sorry, I think I had failed posting the right URL earlier!)

Kazuki Tomono, looking different from a year ago: Experiences he gained from his first GPS overseas
(Note: His 'first' GPS held overseas, as his very first GPS was NHK Trophy in Japan, as a substitute for Dice M.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Tsurara-san! :luv17:
I reaaaaally liked this article. I love his change in attitude, in the end he's an entertainer after all... He does better if he thinks of the performance rather than the medal
Interesting to know that last season he felt intimidated and had a sense of being 'lost' within his programmes.
It makes me so happy to know he's feeling so positive now. I can't wait to see him skating again at CoR!

Good luck to Kazuki! I look forward to seeing him again. Here's to hoping that the hair on his temples grew back in the meantime -> :coffee:
I finally got around to watching his SA gala yesterday, and loved it (not that I expected otherwise). But I miss the trumpet, I hope he brings it back! He won the crowd over. ^ ^

Sadly, Kazuki is in sixth place after his sp at Western... apparently he underrotated the 4T, missed the combo and popped the 4S, but he got positive GOE for the 3A

Sending him good vibes for the free

Just a short post for now.
Not his best, but his performance was sharp, all steps and spins level 4[ETA: I lied, all steps level 4 but not with spins], many jumps quite unstable but made them anyways (with mistakes). 149.41, total 214.55, and with that, he is qualified for Nats.

EDIT: Here's a table for the scores (no judging score yet)
https://www.jsfresults.com/National/2019-2020/fs_j/west/data0105.htm

EDIT2: Here's the protocol sheet
https://www.jsfresults.com/National/2019-2020/fs_j/west/data0105.pdf

In total
1st: Tomono (SP 6th, FS 1st)
2nd: Sota (SP 1st, FS 3rd)
3rd: Mitsuki (SP 5th, FS 2nd)
4th: Ryuju (SP 4th, FS 4th)
5th: Shu (SP 2nd, FS 5th)
6th: Taichi (SP 3rd, FS 6th)

Congrats to Kazuki, this is an important confidence boost for him before GP Russia!
Tsurara, do you happen to know if the competition was televised as was originally planned?

Oops, sorry, I lied :palmf: His spins were not all level 4... well, you can now see it anyways

The competition was on one of Fuji's CS channels (Fuji Two) so, yes. I'm pleased that I got to watch it. (Sad to find quite a few empty seats though)
Not the whole competition, but the second half was live broadcast with Kanako Murakami's commentary.

(I'll be back)

Yaaaaaay, congrats Kazuki!
He did a great job in the free, won in everything apart from spins (which is fair enough, Sota's spins are definitely better than Kazuki's)
https://twitter.com/bigfanofskating/status/1190891498797092865
I see that he still had issues with his axels and got a lutz edge call again, in addition to messing up one spin... But on the other hand he still got level3/4 in the spins and steps, that's really amazing!

I'm so glad this event was broadcast, I hope someone uploads a video of it soon. This Twitter thread has videos from the medal ceremony, it's so nice to see Kazuki at the podium with his friends Sota and Mitsuki :luv17:

The above blog page also has a little bit mention on his Gala with some photos, as in, "Kazuki was pretty much the highlight of the entire gala" and "a smorgasboard of pure FUN"(what does that even mean? lol)

Tomono-kun really needs to be more confident with what he's doing. His interview today gave me a very slight concern with his comment on short program, mentioning his struggle with it, though he sounds like he is now VERY confident with his free. Media coverage didn't seem to have covered that part much, and unfortunately I forgot exactly how he put it (curse my memory), so I'm translating an article published after SP and wait for the latest one after FS till a video or something comes out (hopefully) and check it again (so as not to make unnecessary fuss over it in case it was just me - I love his MR very much too, but please understand that I desperately CRAVE for his clean Chroma!).

Here's the article released yesterday after SP, titled as "Walls to overcome for the two Japanese skaters who chase after Yuzuru Hanyu"
https://sportiva.shueisha.co.jp/clm/othersports/figure/2019/11/03/post_27/index.php

.....(EDIT the first half snipped is now in Sota's thread)

On the other hand, Kazuki Tomono, who placed 5th in total at the first round of GPS, Skate America, had another rough start with SP in this competition, yet again.

"I've had a good condition since Skate America, and I was relaxed when I got in the venue. But I got overly cautious to execute jumps," says Tomono, who received 3.50 reduction from the first 4T with UR. The following 4S was popped into a double without a combination, and his last 3A was with a hand after landing unsteadily; he made error after error. He was 6th with 65.14.

"I was in a state that I had no problems with quads when practicing, so I'm really 'kuyashii'. I think the cause of my failure is coming from my mindset going more inconsistent (lit. the amplitude difference/fluctuation of my feeling becomes bigger) in competition. For some reason with SP, it's hard for me to step out both mentally and physically. I've been making mistakes with short and bouncing back with free lately. I have to do something about that."

Tomono had been avidly trying to grow in all kinds of aspects last season, and that sometimes ended up backfiring on him. He himself admitted, "Too much thinking had put me into a corner, to the point that I even felt tired of skating too." But he also says, "This season, I experienced a lot at Skate America and that sort of took me back to basics, allowing me to step forward mentally and to train in a relaxed way," showing that he is starting to catch an updraft.

If he's more stable with quads in practice/training, his struggle with his short program will be easily wiped away once he gets a good result with it, and from there it should be quite easy for him to go forward.

Yamamoto is assigned to NHK Trophy, starting on November 22, and Tomono is assigned to Rostelecom Cup for his 2nd GPS. The two, as Japanese male skaters to chase the world's top skaters, are clearly aware of their own walls to overcome and trying to attack them.

Thanks for the heads up, Tsurara! I hadn't checked ITL since after Japanese Nationals, when they badmouthed Kazuki and said he only got 5th place at Worlds due to luck :dev2: I'm pleased to see people recognising how much he's improving, though!
BTW, 'smorgasbord' is a Swedish word that is normally used in English to describe a huge quantity and variety of something (basically a feast): https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/smorgasbord

I'm looking forward to see what he said after the FS. I think it's only natural for him to be nervous with the SP, since it's such a risky layout and something completely new for him - I know his FS layout is a bit different, but he was already doing 2 quads in the FS before. Like you, I desperately crave for clean Chroma since I think it just what he needs to overcome his nerves. As usual, I'm glad he's so down to Earth and self-aware!

I found the after-FS interview video on Instagram with its transcript too! I'll just follow that and ignored the questions.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B4aBmpQpKmj/

-I'm pleased with the result itself of winning, but score-wise, it was not something I can be happy with... So I'm not satisfied with the result, though I'm very happy with the 1st place, I'd like to continue on to train for the next.

-As for steps, I've been practicing them really a whole lot since off-season, so I'm glad to get level 4s, all the more so since I lost some levels in short program.

-Regarding the program contents, some things are starting to mesh well together, that is as far as free program is concerned, but there is still something that I can't yet transcend... some things are not meshing together well yet. So I want to rework on those to face the Russian Cup.

-It came as a fresh reminder this time again how important SP is, and as I have this awareness that I tend to do badly in SP, I would like to find the courage to gain confidence and work on that, starting with training/practice.

I'm so glad to know things are starting to 'click' in the free, and the results of his practice with steps are starting to show!
I can only hope he manages to overcome his issues with the short

Hi everyone, since ISU a couple of days ago uploaded on his Youtube channel the full broadcast of 2018 Worlds (among other stuff) I've just watched Kazuki's performances in Milan again; I have to admit I feel so melancholy now, like an old lady who thinks of when she was young:palmf:
I've just realized that we haven't seen Kazuki skating so clean and free of pressure since that time, maybe pressure it's not the right word if we think of his tears after the sp but those were tears of relief and joy so it was somehow different from the pressure he is facing now. Also both programs were so perfect for him, like a tailored suit. :luv17:
Is there anyone else who feels the same and wants to travel back in time and bring his happiness back? I mean I know he is working hard to come back stronger and to show a more mature skate but I wish he could also keep his old spirit

Ahh! Thanks, somehow I didn't think about looking it up in a dictionary :palmf: Thought it was one of those gibberish terms coming from hypes lol (My Swedish friends would surely yell at me for saying this...oops)

I'm looking forward to see what he said after the FS. I think it's only natural for him to be nervous with the SP, since it's such a risky layout and something completely new for him - I know his FS layout is a bit different, but he was already doing 2 quads in the FS before. As for his interviews after FS, I did translate the video one by Fuji, but besides that, there was also a media session and apparently media covered it elsewhere but totally butchered and only released bits and pieces from it, adding their views, instead of his raw words with context. And
BTW, did you see there was another Asahi article (behind paywall): https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASMC35F2YMC3UTQP01W.html :)
That is one of them, along with this one after SP.
Then I saw this article from Doshisha Atom which wasn't butchered as much as others, and I started working on it halfway when I had time... and then, I saw a lot better one released by TVguide here and decided to do it instead. Sorry for taking so long, but I've had very busy weeks lately. My translation is coming after this post.

As for the SP issue he mentioned, at first I was wondering if what he called 苦手意識 (Nigate-ishiki, this awareness that he feels he's not good at it) was about this particular program, chroma, as I'm sure it's a real killer-program (I mean, it's a killer in both positive and negative ways). But fortunately(?) it seems like he was talking about his impression on short programs in general, not just chroma, but many (if not all) of his short programs in the past. (Or you can also say, more like, he always does a lot better in free. :p)

Btw, your posts are my motivation to do translations, so please keep them coming! I always ask you to pick one (or more) to translate and then I decide to translate another, (I'm really sorry about that!) but I can get a sort of pointer of what you want to read from your choices, so, please do not be discouraged by me choosing different ones (and allow me to do so again), and continue to let me know please! I often miss out some without you!

Media Session after FS
──Looking back at your performance in free, tell us what you feel now.
Tomono: I have an impression that I was able to go with a bang right from the start, but it's 'kuyashii' that I lost my form (off balance) at 3A. As for the rest, I'm starting to nail it with certain things, and I'd like to take it positively that I did perform well enough to lead it to (further improvement in) the coming Russian Cup.

──Any good feelings on quads?
Tomono: It's 'kuyashii' with 4T, but it's fruitful for me that I could land the following 4S. I could bring out what I've been practicing, so I'm happy with that part.

──What did you rework on from your short program yesterday?
Tomono: I feel that the second salchow will be the key, so I'm glad that I cleared that part. But it was a shame (to fail) on the axel, and because I was no good in short, my score didn't go higher either. I should have performed (free) in the last group. I'll have to reflect on myself. I'm going to watch the (others') performances in the next (last) group to learn from them.

── You said at Kinki block 2019 that you had to work on your mental side, how does that go?
Tomono: Mentally it's getting better compared to how it was before, little by little, though. Now I'd like to keep it under control physically.

──You mean, you became positive?
Tomono: I can face competition very positively. I learned that there's no point in getting depressed, so I want to stay calm, without being too emotional, and analyze myself well. Just work on what needs to be fixed for the next and practice on. That (being positive and calm) is something I need to value in order to deliver my own performance in my own style, I've just started realizing that... (bitter laugh) To perform in my own way (to be myself), I'd like to work hard on jumps to clear/solve my problems.

──Please tell us your enthusiasm for the coming GPS, Russian Cup.
Tomono: I feel that my free is getting a lot better, though I haven't yet managed to get it done without mistakes. So, I guess I need to work on short. I want to work on short, so that I can gain a momentum with (a good result of) short before facing free.

──Are you aiming to podium at Russian Cup?
Tomono: If I get to deliver my own performances, it will open up the possibility for the podium, I think. So I {want to be or am, cannot tell by the available context} confident there. But for now, the level of perfection (of my performances) hasn't reached there yet to say so. (bitter laugh) I just have to work hard over the remaining 2 weeks.

──Do you have a positive image for the Russian Cup?
Tomono: If I do so now as is without changes, that's only me hoping with no possibilities. So, I want to make it up with more practice/training. But the level of perfection in practice is getting significantly higher, and I have a good feeling that I can deliver it in competition some time. That may be why I can stay calm to analyze myself now.

Hmmm I totally see where you're coming from, but also I'm happy that he chose to take a riskier path and work on his own improvement and getting out of his comfort zone. Please don't get me wrong, I LOVE his Milan 2018 performances, they made me fall in love with him. However watching it now, I can't help but notice how much he's improved since then, in terms of speed and skating skills for example. Although I agree those programmes were perfect for him at the time, I'm also very happy he's showing us different sides of himself now. I totally get the bittersweet feeling but I guess that's often the way when we watch someone growing up :

That is one of them, along with this one after SP.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Tsurara! Not a problem at all you translated a different article! I hadn't seen the TV Guide one, it is very interesting indeed. I'm so glad to know he's feeling more positive (even though little by little) and he said his accuracy in practice is increasing! :hap57:
