    Eurosport Updates

Just throught that since we have a thread about the changes happening at NBC Universal ahead of the new season, we should also have a thread about the changes happening at Eurosport.

Eurosport Player was given a major overhaul yesterday, and it is so much better than the previous incarnation.

As you know, I have had a lot of complaints about Eurosport Player over the years. Particularly after the last update, when a lot of features that I found invaluable were either removed or cut back to the extent that they were useless.

That last update led to me no longer being able to do TV listings posts for the figure skating competitions that they showed.

Back in the good old days, there used to be TV listings for the previous 7 days, today, and the next 14 days. Then, that gradually got cut down to 3 days either side of today, and finally to 1 day either side.

Well, the listings are now back up to 7 days either side!!!

Also, the search facility that was removed in the last update has now been restored.

But, here is the best bit. You don't have to go to the bother of typing "figure skating" (or it's translations) into the search bar – there is now an actual figure skating button that takes you to a page listing all the figure skating that is being shown within the 7 days either side framework!!!

And this is also the case for other sports!

Here are the categories, and the direct links to their listings:

A note: It is still the case that all versions of Eurosport Player run from the eurosportplayer.com address, and re-direct to the local version. So, to avoid confusion, I have used the generic addresses in the table. The “en” in the address refers to the language the website is displayed in, NOT the language the commentary is in. The commentary is still only available in the local language on each version.

In the last update, the On Demand page on the British version of the Eurosport Player was given a new layout and a way of organising things which I found very confusing. Meanwhile, the other versions kept the old layout with the same categories that they always had. Well, I am pleased to report that the British version has fallen back in line with the continental versions. The page may look very different to how it used to look, but it is essentially organised the same way as we were used to. Oh, and the categories are now arranged alphabetically, which helps.

But, here is the best bit. The biggest drawback of the Eurosport Player over the years was that only things that were shown on Eurosport 1 or Eurosport 2 went into the On Demand archives. BUT, that has now been changed. Things that were not shown on the linear channels but were shown on Eurosport Player are now being put into the On Demand archives as well!!!!

So, that means that we should be able to go back and watch competitions in their entirity!!!

The only slight complaint is that it no longer tells you when the archived items are available until. But, going from the archived snooker broadcasts, it looks like it is still for 7 days after the programme was first broadcast.

Moving onto the live streaming pages, and it used to be that the video player filled the whole page, and additional information about what you were watching, and a list of the other livestreams available, were overlaid on top of the video player. Thankfully, that has now changed. The video player now appears at the top of an actual page, and all the stuff that used to be overlaid on top of it is now below it.

As for the video player itself, it has become much easier to use. The slidey bar is much more sensitive than it used to be. Plus, there are now buttons to jump back 30 seconds, and jump forward 30 seconds. And a button to go straight to LIVE.

On the other hand, they have also got rid of a lot of things that were useful. Firstly, the counter on the live streaming video screens is gone. So, if you know the specific time you want to wind back to, you can’t just take the slidey bar straight to that time. You have to experiment and try to find the point you want yourself.

But, this is made easier because of the main thing they have got rid of. Previously, you could wind back up to 3 hours on all streams. That is still the case on the additional streams. But, on the Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2 streams, you can now wind back up to… 5 minutes!!!

What is the use of that?! Like, that is not even long enough to re-watch somebody's SP after they get their scores!

They have also got rid of the option to have multiple videos displayed at the same time. I have to be honest – I only tested it out once, and I didn’t like it because they put a wide border around the videos (opening the videos in different windows and adjusting the size of the windows makes more economical use of the screen space). But, I’m still surprised that they got rid of it. Especially since they still have the additional camera angles that are made available for some sports (e.g. MotoGP).

Anyway, on the whole, the new Eurosport Player is definitely an improvement on the old one.

I just hope that these improvements to the Player are not going to be Eurosport’s excuse for not launching any new linear channels between now and February. Because it would be unforgivable if they tried to cover the Olympics with just 2 linear channels...

Wow, thanks for the update, CaroLiz_fan! I noticed there was a major update to the player, but haven't checked it out yet.
I took a subscription to the player last month when I noticed it was only 30 euros for a full year. I figured I would probably get enough use out of it with the GP series, but couldn't find any info anywhere about possible extra streams for the Olympics, and especially if any such extra streams will be included in the normal subscriptions or if we have to pay extra still.
But I already watched loads of Worlds Diving on the player, so that was already worth it, I guess. ;-)

Edit: how worried should I be that the updated website now calls figure skating "kunstzwemmen"? (Lit. art swimming)

Like Winnie I bought the 30 Euro subscription for a year a month ago. I was also pretty positive that they would change the player and improve it before the Olympics. They now offer the friday football games of the Bundesliga in Germany so they have many new german subscribers and those people are not easily ignorable like the niche fans of figure skating. So it was clear they had to work on the issues they had to satisfy the new costumers.

I very much hope that they will show the Olympics on their stream. This and the GP series is the reason I subscribed for a year. I don't know if they even offer the monthly subscription anymore. Looking forward to the new season!

They probably will have everything on their streams, but I'm not convinced yet that our annual subscription means it'll be included, or that people have to pay extra for it still. I don't quite trust Eurosport enough to believe I've got everything covered with just 30 euros...

There's been some big news for German TV viewers about the Olympics, too:

    https://corporate.discovery.com/disc...ce-in-germany/

    https://www.zdf.de/sport/olympia-liv...d-zdf-100.html

the ARD/ZDF at long last have acquired a sublicense (Germany was just about the only European country that didn't already earlier get an agreement with Discovery, Eurosport' mother company). BUT, and this is a big BUT... there are a few sports they're not allowed to air live. And of course one of them is figure skating.

Now, I'm not entirely sure if that's because the German TV channels do not *want* to pay for the live rights, or if Discovery simply refused to sell them. It could actually be the first, because figure skating, at least, is in the dead-of-night in Germany, so maybe they figure there won't be enough viewers at that time of "day" to warrant spending a lot of money on buying the live-airing rights from Discovery. But the other events are short track, snow boarding and ice hockey, and I haven't checked out at what time of day those events take place, so not sure if my theory holds. But since it's NBC pulling the strings behind the scenes, just so that American viewers get everything on prime time, and I think they're pretty good at snow boarding and ice hockey, who knows. ;-)

I also don't know the specifics of this sublicence in other European countries. It could very well be that this "no live figure skating, short track etc." deal goes for the other countries as well.

    Anyway, back on track:
Eurosport [...] will show free-to-air coverage on Eurosport 1 as a dedicated Olympic Games channel during Games-time and holds rights to air every moment – with live feeds of all sports – on TV or streaming on mobile, tablet or online with Eurosport Player.
Nothing too specific yet, but I am hoping for live feeds of all sports at all times in the Player, at least.

I was secretely celebrating that ARD/ZDF didn't get the rights. It's a huge money drain, they travel to the country with two different teams, and ARD/ZDF are horrible when it comes to the actual commentating and cutting of the events. It's no wonder that these sports are not included. Germany and the main tv stations don't give a single, you know what, about figure skating, even if we're actually having a gold candidate in Savchenko/Massot. Strange because one of the ZDF main commentators is Rudi Cerne a former figure skater.

I so prefer Eurosport. Even if I have to pay extra, at least I can watch the GP series, Euros, Worlds....sometimes even Nebelhorn. This year they also showed the Uni Games.

I understand. Personally I'm in the "the more live commentaries, the merrier" camp, but since they cannot do live commentary for figure skating, anyway, there doesn't seem to be much point to it now. Although I think the ARD/ADF do like alpine skiing a lot, so that's nice if they air some of that live (no chance of that happening on Dutch telly). If I don't have to watch Eurosport, I don't. Their commercial breaks drive me crazy!

I found the information I was looking for re: Dutch public television and the sublicense. It doesn't sound nearly as good as the ARD/ZDF one: https://nos.nl/artikel/2094210-olymp...ij-de-nos.html
In the last part, it says that Eurosport keeps two LIVE sports exclusive, including ice hockey, but doesn't mention which other sport. Presumably either figure skating, short track or snow board; knowing my luck, it'll be figure skating. Short track and snow boarding are a lot more popular in Holland than figure skating.
Plus, Eurosport keeps the streaming rights, except that the NOS is allowed to stream what they're also airing on television at the same time. In other words, pretty useless. At least the ARD/ZDF get three extra live streams!

Re: the Eurosport Player (sorry for getting off-track), I've had a chance to sit and check out the updates CaroLiza_fan mentioned.
I do actually miss the multiple screens option. I've used it more than once.
Something I'm also not seeing anymore is the option to go to Light mode. Pretty sure there used to be a way to tell the player to go to a lower-quality video option. It was handy, on occasion, and not everybody has super speedy internet.
Where did the multiple audio option go? I don't want to be stuck with just Dutch commentary!
And last but not least, why is Firefox suddenly not supported anymore? I really don't want to switch to another browser...

Commercials are the one thing I dislike about Eurosport. But then they usually never cut to commercial when something really important is going on in fs, not even in the repeats between the waiting between performance and point announcement.

I stopped using Firefox for Eurosport two years, or so, ago. It just doesn't work for me. I use Chrome, it's the best option imho. Also have chromecast now, so I can actually stream it on TV. English commentary has been gone from the player since last season, so I have to watch in german.

Germany only cares about football. Everything else is second fiddle. They love their biathlon and ski jumping as Wintersport...but figure skating is non-existant on the main stations. That's why I am so thankful for Eurosport and them showing the whole GP series. But I understand that the Netherlands has it worse, it seems.

Well, it could be much worse. I love to whine about stuff (pretty sure that's what the internet was invented for), but to be fair, I have a ridiculously good internet connection (and AppleTV for streaming), so if I have access to a livestream, that's good enough for me. You hear me, Eurosport? Better make sure you make *all* sports accessible through stream, and LIVE! And keep the commercial breaks down to a minimum, plz thank you.

I'm not so sure about Eurosport airing all of the GPs, though, especially not live. I'm pretty sure they didn't these past few years, although of course it differs per country. IIRC the French GP is a particular difficult one. Skate America had decent live coverage across the different Eurosport regions, so did Skate Canada, but after that...? (I'm too lazy to dive into the archives and look up all the threads.) And I'm not even sure the livestream was available for all events.

I may have to dig up chrome. I've used Firefox for as long as I can remember, but maybe it's time to give chrome a try. All I remember about it is that it was very... simplistic-looking.

I hope the listings for Eurosport's regular TV and not just for the player will be listed like that as well in all countries. What is aired on TV is not the same in all European countries. I don't like watching online because of the constant buffering I get.

Firstly, you're not actually going off track. Although the first post was about Eurosport Player, I deliberately gave the thread a title which meant what it could be used as a general discussion about Eurosport. Because I know we all like to give our views on their coverage...

Yeah, light-mode is gone. But, I actually found it harder to work with than the full mode, so it doesn't bother me that it is gone.

As for the video quality, the Player was frequently automatically going to the lower-quality video for me before the latest update. But, since then, it seems to be the high-quality video all the time. So, I think they have only the high-quality video now. But, it was nice to have the option to choose to go to a lower quality if you wanted to. Like, although they show the best quality by default, all the video sharing websites still give you the option to change to a range of lower qualities. As you said, it was useful if you didn't have good internet speed.

The multiple audio option went last year. And I really ranted and raved about it disappearing, since I was watching ESP Deutschland a lot because British ESP were not showing a lot of Ski Jumping competitions due to clashes with things that were of more interest to British viewers.

Quote Originally Posted by Winnie_20 View Post

Is it not?! I didn't notice because I got into the habit of watching things on Chrome. Like MaiKatze, I was having all sorts of problems when trying to watch the previous versions of the ESP Player on Firefox. Then another member suggested watching it on Chrome, and I didn't have any bother on there. So, I stuck with it.

Maybe there were so many people having the same problems that Eurosport decided to just give up on Firefox. I don't know, though.

About the subscription. I joined when they introduced the £5 a month automatic renewal package. I'm well past the minimum 12 month subscription period, so I am free to cancel whenever I want.

Now that they have intoduced this £30 for 12 month package, I want to switch to it.

My next payment is due on 24th August, but I am going on holidays at the start of September. So, since I won't be using it while away, I am intending on cancelling my £5 per month Annual Pass before 24th August, and then signing up for the £30 Annual Pass when I come home.

So, could somebody who has previously cancelled their subscription and signed up again let me know if I am able to do this? Or, do you have to go back onto the same package that you were on?

And do you have to wait a certain amount of time before you can sign up again? Because, if you have to wait a month before signing up again, that could be a problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    D'oh, I hadn't even realized.
But, it was nice to have the option to choose to go to a lower quality if you wanted to.
I thought it was a very nice option to have. If, say, you're on holiday, you will likely not have access to the speedy internet you enjoy at home, and being able to change to a specific quality is very handy then, especially if you're on 3 or 4G and paying for the megabytes.

The multiple audio option went last year.
I don't remember that at all. Maybe I just never noticed because I had the TV recordings and those did have multiple audio channels.

Maybe there were so many people having the same problems that Eurosport decided to just give up on Firefox. I don't know, though.
Sounds plausible enough. Either way, they don't officially support it anymore; it's not listed on the FAQs page. The player does seem to be working, though, but I guess I'll switch to chrome just to be on the safe side.

So, could somebody who has previously cancelled their subscription and signed up again let me know if I am able to do this? Or, do you have to go back onto the same package that you were on?
Sorry I cannot help you with those specific questions. I would think that it's perfectly okay to cancel a subscription and then change to another one. There's nothing on the FAQ page (updated June 2017) about having to wait a certain amount of time before you're allowed to sign up again. In fact, I'd think they'd be very happy if you signed up again asap, even if it's a different kind of subscription and worked out cheaper in the end.

I was thinking about taking a subscription to the player for a full year, but are you telling that programation depends on the country? Could I know before hand if they will emit any figure skating in my country?

Yes, due to rights issues, every country has their own programming. Sometimes they can differ quite a lot! If you want an idea of how different, I suggest taking a peek at the archived threads from last season. CaroLiza_fan posted listings for the figure skating Grand Prix series in some of the more popular countries.

And alas, there is no way to know in advance what you'll get when it comes to figure skating, although again, the listings in the archives should be a good indication. Mind, Eurosport is notorious for adjusting their schedules even up to the minute before. ;-).

Phew! Thanks for the update - when I saw the thread title, I thought there was another Damoclean sword dangling over Eurosport like the Discovery Channel package thing last season but relieved to know that it's about improvements. YAY!!!!
