Too right that something's started to gel in Joseph's skating....

Thanks SnowWhite for launching the fest....He's about to start making his mark....and Yves Desjardins has clearly worked with him to find vehicles that fit him, and differentiate him as he has with Nic Nadeau.

Joseph wowed me with his perfect SP while I was watching the Championnats québécois d'été / Quebec Summer Championships livestream :luv17: , and when I saw him compete in person the next day with a near-perfect LP, he blew my mind away! Absolutely SPECTACULAR!!! (Or better yet, PHAN-TASTIC!!! ) I was of course aware that he was a promising young talent, but I had no idea he could be this great. While he was skating, I almost wanted to put him on a pedestal and just worship his skills.

The link to my fancam of his LP is in the OP (thanks for listing it, SnowWhite! :) ), and in case there are fans who didn't already see the Junior Men medal ceremony, it's here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5wuw53

Group Three - Men's Event

Canada's Joseph Phan landed a quadruple toe loop of his own. The men's event is shaping up to be a battle royale for the title.

Joseph caught my eye when he was crowned junior national champ. I have most of his vids dated back to 2015.
I remember he landed his first quad in competition last season but still had difficulty with 3A.
I was impressed how much he improved on his jumps at the beginning of this season. :hap10:
The only worry I have is he's probably going to grow over 180cm too :shock2:

He's in 2nd place after the SP at the JGP Brisbane: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pduj3Fcpjc Ted Barton has also noticed how much Joseph has improved since last season.

When I met him at the Championnats, I remember thinking he was fairly tall for an Asian (he's 5'9" according to his ISU bio), and considering that he had only turned 16 a week beforehand, he'll most likely be taller than Nam.

he may be already done growing... :) the difference i find with our other kids growing to new heights is that his body seems to have grown all together ;) i know this doesn't make sense LOL but Nam still has filling up to do... Roman is just starting to look better and comfortable with his own body. Joseph looks like he is done and already adjusted.

There are lots of tall asian guys Siberia... you would be surprised ;)

I stayed up last night... I know... crazy... to me Jo was the best all around skater, especially when it comes to skating skills and textbook jumps... but damn it... despite a fabulous and flowing combo, and a great triple lutz rippon, he just couldn't hold his landing edge for the 3a... he would have been very close to first if he had.

Positive point : all level 4 for spins and footwork.

There is such quality in this young skater. Funny enough, I saw him live at Nationals and wasn't super impressed a year ago... I think that like people have noticed, his skating has improved tons.

Good coaching will do that... good work ethics.... I have been waiting to see who may become mini-chiddy over the years in terms of style and quality of skating... I am not willing to make a choice yet but jo is the front runner.... With our other tall kids, we have a lot to look for, but Joseph has the classic style I like.... I hope he does well in the LP. He is capable of a clean and very high scoring LP.

I'm short, so almost everyone is taller than me. :p I only meant that Joseph was noticeably above average in height compared to most other Asians that I've met.

I was thinking the exact same thing during the Championnats! I'm not saying that Joseph will become Patrick Chan 2.0 (nor does he have to be; he's amazing simply being himself :) ), but he's the closest so far.

I agree.... and no pressure to Jo... we love you the way you are ;) it's just that he is so smooth on his skates and when he is on, his jumps are textbook... his musicality is also on a similar level. For instance, I think of Nic more as a Kurt ;)

but as you say so well Siberia... in a few years Jo and Nic will have made their own names ;)

I know it's a little late, but here are his QSC performances that I've isolated from Patinage Québec's archived livestream:

There are also a couple of QSC Junior Men podium images I forgot to post earlier:

I've noticed that the official video for his JGP Brisbane SP is missing his kiss & cry, so I've cut my own version from the ISU's archived livestream which includes it: https://streamable.com/05x7n

There's nothing wrong with saying that Joseph is somewhat Chan-like. Patrick is one of his two idols (the other is Yuzu); he just doesn't emulate his Canadian hero to the same degree that Nic does with Kurt, or Roman with Jeff, and that's totally fine. He's already Phan-tastic in his own right, and he will be even more so in the future.
