I beg to differ about the decline of young talented stars coming up through the ranks. There are 11 juvenile dance couples competing at Easterns. Wheaton Ice Skating Academy has 15 ice dance teams. And there are other centers of ice dance, like Detroit. I don't know about singles and pairs, but ice dance is not dead!

The East coast produces ALOT of young female talent. South Atlantic's alone tends to have 100+ female skaters at both the juvenile and intermediate levels.

At South Atlantics at those same levels but for males, they do not have enough skaters to need a qualifying round.

Pairs - I looked at the Eastern line up yesterday. If I remember correctly, there are about 5 Juv pairs. By intermediates, you are down to 3. Novice is down to 2.

Boots on the ground! Went to the rink and met up with my friends Andy and Evelyn, (who you see all the time in the front row at events on TV in their American Flag jackets) and Karen. Our group of 6-7 fans...ok, the only group of fans....stand out cause I am wearing one of my hi-viz motorcycle coats. Highs for me were watching Karen Chen's brother, Jeffrey Chen, and his partner Gianna Buckley do Novice Ice dance. They are good and in second place. There are some interesting Novice ladies here like Zhu, Miyagi and Lee. Chloe Lewis and Logan Bye are listed as seniors in the Media guide but here are skating as Juniors in ice dance and are in the lead by a large margin.
John Kerr is here coaching and I told him we missed his sister and he....
Back into the fray tomarrow......

Great Job, Doris! If you dont have time for novice ladies, no worries. I copied and pasted your work into a word doc and made my own program. Even the official program doesnt have ages or heights. For $20, personally, I didnt thing the official program had much to offer except black and white pics and coaches names....and lots of advertising. Its a good fund raiser for the local club but I am a bit peeved at them as I tried to buy an advanced ticket for a $10 savings and two members of the LOC ignored my emails. If anyone ever attends these events, the advanced ticket info is burried in the PDF event annoucement for the skaters, I found out. Back into the fray tonight for novice ladies FS. Since the novices have been thrown under the bus at nationals, relagated to some far away cold rink with conflicts with the main arena, this is a good chance to see some of them.

For some reason, there is no huge group of ice dancers at the senior level on the west coast. There has not been for some years.
There were only 4 senior teams in 2016
http://www.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2016/18515/results.html

3 in 2014
http://www.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2014/2014_pc_fs_sectionals/results.html

2 in 2010

4 is not bad.

But this year, none at seniors, 4 at juniors.

Lewis and Bye are listed in the current season media guide as seniors. Not knowing anything, I would assume this means they have passed their senior tests?

Yes, they cannot compete as seniors otherwise AFAIR.

Another exciting day at the skating. I had never seen juvenile pairs.....max cute factor but I was there for the novice ladies.....
It was a nail biter with lots of lead changing but in the end, the short program leader Amie Miyagi's minor meltdown in the FS was not bad enough
to keep her from going to San Jose. She got fourth, beating out Anastasiya Chechetenko by three points.
My unofficial count says it was Lin, Zhu, Rosa, and Miyagi, but I didnt get my nap in so who knows?

Tomarrow, my day begins with junior dance.....everyone excited about SA in Everett, the other Washington.

OK, I am still confused....so why are the Lillihammer Jr. Olympic silver medalists and international team members not given byes (pun intended) to Nats Jr. Level????? I must be tired...off to the arena at noon to see them.

Because it's not part of the rulebook?

Juniors can get a bye through qualifying for the JGPF or having an international conflict with Sectionals (though there aren't usually any juniors sent to internationals around this time). Medalling at the Youth Olympics is not part of the bye rules

Oof, that senior ladies lineup. I know it's an American thing to start competing senior domestically asap but... if Kaitlyn, Nina, and Livvy don't make nationals, how on earth are they supposed to get any assignments next year? All seven of those girls deserve to be at nats and have been multiple times.

Made it to Saturday. Well, I guess you know your friends are important when the Director of Events and the President of the USFSA come up and talk to them! I kept my mouth shut which was probably a good thing but I did want to thank them for San Jose and Everett.
So many great, good people there at this small rink you are crammed in with. Rudy Galindo, Ricky Dornbush, Doug Razzano, Dennis Pham, Dalilah Sappenfield, Peter Oppegard…and my favorite…Naomi Nari Nam.

My friend Andy knows Kaitlyn Nguyen’s family (and everyone else) so they came and sat with us for Sr. Ladies SP. I didn’t catch all the story but I think Kaitlyn broke an ankle and now that its healed, the other ankle is injured (you could see her shaking it) so she gets the gutsy performance of the night award. Starr Andrews nailed the night but I also enjoyed Tessa Hong and Vivian Le.
Sarah Feng and TJ Nyman were easily the best in Jr. Pairs short.
In Jr Ladies short, Alysa Liu is on top but I also liked Lily Sun and Akari Nakahara
Chloe and Logan were great in Jr. Dance and IIRC had some interesting lifts......
No one agreed on which was the "dress of the night" but there were some very elegant ones...mostly black.
Tomarrow happens then its life back to normal, till San Jose.
Thanks to Andy and Evelyn, Karin, Nancy, Dorthy and the gang for putting up with me so far.
