Vladimir Samoilov

Vladimir Samoilov (Russian: Владимир Самойлов) is a Polish figure skater who was born on May 13, 1999, in Moscow, Russia. He previously represented Russia.

Samoilov is a 2017 JGP silver medalist and has recently had success at both the junior and senior levels a competitions like various levels of the Russian Cup and Minsk Arena Ice Star. He's had a difficult skating career up until this point (in fact, he was considering retirement at the end of last season), but the 2017-18 season so far has been a breakout one for him.

Career Summary:

Vovan began skating in 2003 at the age of 4 under Irina Smirnova. A lot of the details of his early skating career aren't very clear (if anyone has insight on this, feel free to share), but according to his ISU bio, at some point he changed coaches and began skating under Irina Galustyan (Anastasia Galustyan's mom!), but later began his competitive career under Inna Goncharenko.

He's had several JGP assignments over the years (Estonia in 2014, Spain in 2015, and Italy in 2017) but never placed higher than 6th until his silver medal this season. He's struggled at Russian Nationals as well with his highest Junior level finish being 4th, and a last place finish last year at the Senior level.

In the 2016-17 season he was coached by Eteri Tutberidze and Sergei Dudakov with little success. As aforementioned, he was considering retiring after last season, but rather ended up switching coaches again. He now skates under Evgeni Plushenko, which, if his recent results are any indication, seems to be going well for him. Samoilov at some point parted ways with Plushenko and began training under Alexey Vasilievsky, Yulia Lavrenchuk, and Anna Tsareva at Sambo 70. He was named part of the Russian Senior Men's National reserve team for the 2018-2019 season.

As of the 2019-20 season, Vladimir now trains under Viktoria Butsaeva in Moscow.

Of course! :) I figured it was about time for him to have his own. Hopefully we'll see more interest in him as he progresses.

Congratulations to your first thread and posts on GoldenSkate, vesperalvioletta! :hap10: I was also thinking about making a new one for Vladimir. Noticed him at angels of Pluchenko instargam.

I thought Vovan did a great job in the short program :yahoo:, especially after the catastrophe that was last year, seeing him look secure in all of his jumps and hanging with some of the top contenders score-wise was just awesome!

I think the free skate will be the real test, but in my opinion he’s definitely doing a good job of establishing himself as an up-and-comer on the senior circuit.

Has anyone heard anything about what Vladimir is up to these days? I follow him on Instagram and he hasn't posted anything skating related since March. He also isn't in any of the Angels of Plushenko's Instagram posts. Has he left Plushy? Has he retired? I have so many questions.

I believe he's left Plushy's - there was some discussion about him on the Russian Men's thread in The Edge.

I just checked out the Russian Men's thread and I'm relieved to hear that he's not injured/hasn't retired. If he's happier there, then I'm glad he left with Vasilievski and Laverenchuk.

Pretty good showing today for Vovan at the Cup of Russia stage IV. He's currently in 3rd after the short behind Petr Gummenik and Maxim Kovtun.

I just came across this guy. His lutz is prerotated as heck and the loop combination was a little iffy, but man, the fact that he can land so many quads is impressive! How is he not more well known?

Vovan is actually a "failed" Eteri student. He left her with a back injury at the end of the 2016-17 season after placing last at Russian Nationals. He trained with Plushenko for a year, had some decent results, then started to struggle again when he left Plushenko with Lavrenchuk and Vasilievsky. His results have been so up and down that I think most people have stopped paying attention to him.

Vovan is currently in second after the SP at his second Russian Cup event with a score of 88.12. He stands a great chance of making it to Nationals if he's able to stay on the podium!
