Yes but even with all those mistakes at nationals, she still beat the other ladies who were clean. I’m not saying she’s delivering her tech, but she will still score higher internationally, which is what Canada needs at worlds.

Clean? Not so. IIRC, Alaine was FIFTH after the SP at Nationals after falling on the 3z.
The standings of the others after the SP:

1. Daleman. Combusted in the FS, placed 8th there and fell to 5th overall
2. Austman. Popped the flip and fell on the final 3S. With limited tech content, 5th in the FS and 4th overall.
3. Mallet. Fell on one 3lo and URd the other. Singled her final axel. 3rd in the FS and 3rd overall.
4. Schumacher. Popped the opening 3z to a 2z!<<; URd 3f and 3s. 7th in the FS and 7th overall.
5. Chartrand. 3z+3t<, 3z<, 3s<+3t. First in FS and first overall
6. Cotop. Clean in SP and FS but limited tech content. 2nd in the FS and 2nd overall.

Alaine won the FS, but only Aurora was clean in both segments. All of the others were clean in the SP, but none skated a clean FS.

Exactly. Aurora was clean in both programs, and Alaine was FAR from clean in both but still beat Aurora by 17 points overall. larkyn had a 5 point on Alaine in the short, but unclean Alaine still beat her by 18 points. Alaine has the International PCS advantage, and therefore is the best bet with gabby to keep 2 spots.

Aurora' limited tech (no 3z or 3f in SP and no 3z and just one 3f in FS) held her scores down at Canadians; she also got low (6s and low 7s) PCS scores compared to Alaine's 7s and 8s.
Aurora had the same tech at Bavarian Open and won the bronze medal at her very first senior international. Even with limited tech, she has excellent skating skills and an elegant look on the ice.

I disagree that Alaine is the best bet with Gabby to keep 2 spots. I wouldn't risk a bet on Alaine under any circumstances after looking at her recent record:

In the fall of 2014 she was 4th at the US Classic, won a bronze GP medal, won Nationals silver, and was 10th at 2015 4CC before placing 11th at 2015 Worlds. That was a good finish for her after a promising season.

In the fall of 2015, she was 4th at Nebelhorn, 12th and 6th at her GP events, then won her first Nationals with a bravura performance. She then placed 11th at 4CC and 16th at Worlds. No one could understand what had happened.

The 16-17th and 17th-18th seasons were dismal, with one 5th at 2016 SC and then 10th-11ths at the other GP events in those years. Her only good placements were at Autumn Classics on home ice (2nd and 5th) and an 8th at 2018 4CC in a depleted pre-Olympic field. She placed 3rd at 2017 Nationals and didn't make it to Worlds (only 2 spots then). At 2018 Nationals, with 3 World spots, she was 4th.

This season, she was 8th at Nebelhorn, 9th and 8th in the GP, won her second Nationals and went on to finish 16th at 4CC.

Her record just doesn't inspire confidence. Nebelhorn (PCS mid 6s), GP (PCS upper 6s SA) and 4CC (mostly upper 6s) are international events, and this season she hasn't placed well at any of them. Her mostly 6s PCS scores at non-Canadian events don't indicate any advantage at all.

As I said previously, most of her best efforts have come on home ice. Worlds 2020 will be on home ice, but if Kaetlyn returns and Gabby is back up to speed, Canada will need 3 spots for Alaine to have a shot there.

Appears to me that a healthy Canadian ladies team, might be a threat to the world order or the often used phrase, "that was not suppose to happen." With Gabby, Aurora, Alaine, Veronik and Alicia, on the road to improved health, and Queen Keatlyn looking from the sidelines, some here have every reason to be ...afraid.

A reminder and for the record, 50% of World podium placements the past 2 years were claimed by Canadian women. ;) Unmatched by any other federation.

The two US ladies going to Worlds are Tennell and Bell (5th and 6th at 4CC). There's a 23-point gap between the lowest ranking US lady and the highest-ranking Canadian lady at 4CC. And a 46+ point gap between the lowest-ranking US lady and Alaine.

The only possible 'threat' is Gabby, and Tennell beat her at both Olympics and 2018 Worlds.

Some have previously criticized Canadian women and their chances of success on GS ad nauseam, only to be left  I have no doubt that Canadian ladies, will strike again.

I’m hoping Aurora played it safe at BO to ensure she got her minimums.

I’m hoping that she will have enough time to get the 3F back in the short since she was successful with it in the long.

I think Aurora has a great future ahead, building tech and hopefully consistency over the next quad! She’s lovely to watch with great lines that I think will only improve.

I'm really hopeful for Aurora's future as well. She's coming back from a very serious injury (fractured pelvis), and she is slowly rebuilding her technical arsenal. I think that she has a really lovely presence on the ice and great basics. I am also looking forward to seeing Veronik's improvements as she rebuilds her tech after her foot surgeries and a substantial amount of time off. She's another skater who has a really nice presence on the ice.

:dumb: Just being realistic.

Another 'reality' check for us, eh? ;)

The problem for Larkyn and Veronik is that both have low BV free skates so moving up from 11th and 12th in the rankings to top 10 is a tough proposition. The skaters ranked above them have 3f, 3z and 3/3s and a sizable point cushion. OTOH, there are two skaters just tenths of a point below them who also have better BV and could potentially pass them.

We'll just have to wait and see how the FS falls out tonight.

Anyway, whether you like it or not, Alaine earned her spot on the Worlds team as the National Champion.

Larkyn and Veronik moved up because two skaters above them bombed their FS (Craine, who appeared to be ill, and Ting Cui). The skater in 8th place, just above Veronik, scored 17.5 points higher than Veronik did.

one of the TV commentators during 4CC siad that $CC might well be Veroniques last ever performance ???!!! Commentator said Veronique doesnt know if her body can take much more? Really hope this isnt true but does anybody have the " inside scoop " ?

When I spoke to her at Nationals it didn't sound like she was contemplating retirement, but I have wondered about that, particularly if she gets to fulfill her dream of going to Worlds this year.

Not certain this is the right place to post but have folks seen national team selection for next season is top 3 not 5 for all disciplines!! https://noticeboard.skatecanada.ca/2019/01/25/2019-2020-national-teams/

That's disappointing.

It says that SC has discretion to add based on new partnerships, but that's all. Does this mean Gabby is no longer on the team as she does not meet the top 3 at Nationals criteria? Since Stephen is too young for seniors nest year, it doesn't sound like he would qualify (doesn't meet the 'assigned to a 2019 ISU Grand Prix' criteria - I'm interpreting this as senior GP). So only 2 men get funding (Nam, Keegan, assuming they continue to next year)? If someone in top 3 retires, does 4th place get their National Team spot? For men, where we have a lot of skaters with potential, having 5 spots for funding was great. It's a shame that skaters like Soucisse & Firus, won't get funding.

I wish they had made the criteria more flexible. Like top 3, plus general discretion to add more as they see fit. So if someone is injured, someone in top 3 retires, or top 4 is really competitive, or 4th or 5th are younger, promising athletes, they still get some support.

I was excited at all the opportunities given to younger skaters at Bavarian Open, as this is great for their development. Maybe they want to re-direct some funds to the younger athletes?

On paper, seemingly.

Which is partly why I assume there must be more to this, since if Gabby returns to competition next season there’s no way she won’t be on the team.
