Medvedeva to Arrive in Canada Next Week

What if she's watching I,Tonya or Anna Karenina? Or planning her next season's music to a random playlist from the inflight TV?

I'm not sure but I hope Lubov, who was in somewhat comparable circumstances 4 years ago, will make her feel at home at the TCC.

"Team Cricket" is known for creating a team around their skaters, headed by usually 1-2 coordinating coaches. It's a tight-knit group with specialists assisting and checking in with each other as well as the skater, depending on what the needs of the particular skater are. In Evgenia's case Brian checked in with Tracy Wilson when E first reached out to Brian. Tracy co-coaches Yuzu and Javi with him, but also specializes in skating skills, so she may be co-coaching E as well. But he describes her as his right-hand person so I suspect he'd check with her first anyway. The people that might be specialist coaches for her include Paige (spins), Ghislain (jumps), and Geoff (harness) and others. They also have access to an orthopaedic specialist for injuries and there is a studio and fitness room, but I've heard you contract separately with trainers for off-ice work (but again I bet there are names given to the skaters or passed around among them). One of Evgenia's junior Canadian rinkmates is Conrad Orzel (coached by Lee Barkell), who has posted Instastories and pics in the weights/cardio room there.

I doubt that anyone has to pay the regular membership fee since having internationally famous skaters train there is quite the feather in their cap. TCS&CC is primarily a social club for the city's north end elite, so that fee is v steep. Most skaters would struggle with that on top of their many other costs. Instead, I suspect they pay for ice time, coaching fees, etc. as they would elsewhere. There may be additional fees for people like Yuzu and E, who need solid security to keep fans and paparazzi out, though obviously it's not nearly as bad as if they were at home. Again these are guesses so if anyone knows the arrangements, please feel free to fill in the rough blanks as long as it's not compromising a skater's privacy. But I can say with certainty that many skaters are not wealthy, such as Javi, and though they get some fed support I'd imagine that would not come close to covering a big membership fee and would be directed anyway to costs tied to skating.

Evgenia and Yuzu could probably walk around unrecognized in nearly all the city, but ppl expect the skaters to be in and around the TCC so it's possible they may occasionally encounter someone outside (not sure if the club is completely fenced in or not--I've not seen any high-res pictures of the complete property, which is pretty big--I live in another part of TO and have had no reason to be in that neighbourhood, so have tried to be respectful and not gone there to gawk).

I really hope that her adjustment in Canada goes well. I'm more worried about her accommodation and daily commutes because these can be the trickiest things for any newcomer anywhere Many places in Canada aren't accessible without a car (no free shuttle buses from subway to Ikea :disapp:) and renting a place remotely is a huge challenge. I hope someone at TCC will help her family to get settled and will provide help in how to get IDs, credit cards, insurance, and all that stuff. In my experience it's more challenging than anything and really time consuming.
Brian mentioned in one interview that Zhenya will be staying with a family close to TCC and will have her own room.

This sounds similar to Luba's situation where she lived in the house of one of the adult skaters at TCC.

But Brian's also said that Zhenya's mum was coming. So it's not entirely clear....

Whatever though, I expect that the club will have found her something within a reasonable distance.

I wonder if some of the TCC adult members who take in elite skaters actually have self-contained suites in their homes that can be used for that. They (or former owners) may have had configured space for an extended family member, live-in nanny, or other live-in help that is no longer being used for that purpose.

Is her mom coming to help her settle in or to stay with her the whole time in Canada?

From what I understand, Zhenya's gonna live with her mom, although Brian wasn't particularly clear on that

in the begining or all the time? she has a job in russia so did she just quit?

I think she'll stay as long as Evgenia stays in Canada, but I have no idea about her job. Perhaps she still can work for the same company from Canada, depending on the job it might be possible.

Good thought.

You are correct that there are large homes with suites for staff or ageing parents in that part of town.

They may not be able to be legally rented out separately, but are ok for a semi-boarding situation. I knew someone who was in a place like that during university.

Ironically I was looking at the website of a general contractor recommended to us because we have a small freestanding garage (o luxury rare) that is need of very serious help. Said contractor's portfolio included homes in the Cricket Club neighbourhood , which were huge (in a city context) places that here as I'm sure you know would cost multiple millions. I'm guessing 4-5 or more since in our neck of the woods even a semidetached home can be close to a million now :eeking:. So these places in the CC district could easily include a nice suite.

Shingo Nishiyama (junior rinkmate representing Japan) was staying with a couple host families for awhile but recently said he decided to live on his own (not sure if it's a more independent form of living or if he's actually referring to the second host family as a more independent setup). He posted a couple photos of his new digs this winter, but only showed his bedroom/study, so it was hard to tell if it was an apartment or part of someone's home. I suspect it was the latter, only because he's either 14 or 15. I'm not sure if a landlord could officially rent to someone that young and he's not here with an adult. Anyway, Evgenia doesn't have that problem, being 18 and with her mother.

Speaking of Evgenia, the poor lad's hoping to make friends with his rinkmates according to his interview, so if she encounters him at stroking classes etc, maybe they will bond over living abroad.

More than one.

In a couple of the early ones, he enthused that her mother would be coming.

In more recent ones, he's mentioned Zhenya's staying in the home of a local family...

Hi TGee, do you have a link for these more recent interviews you mentioned? I'm a Zhenya fan, but I seem to have missed them...
