Aleksandra has been in action again this week.

Seeing as I forgot to do it at the time, it would probably be a good idea to mention how Skate Southern went first. She won the SP by a massive 13.63 points! And this was even with a fall. Her score of 49.07 was only 1.91 points lower than her Absolute Best PB for the SP under the 3.0 GOE system, which had been achieved way back in December 2014! But then she withdrew from the FS. :disapp:

Considering that she hadn't been in a competition for a year and a half, this was a remarkable comeback.

Fast forward 4 months, and Dundee in Scotland was hosting the first Senior B to be held in the UK for years, the Tayside Trophy. However, there were only British skaters entered in Senior Ladies, which meant that it would not count towards minimum TES's. Fortunately for everybody, this changed when a late entry arrived from Aleksandra.

Aleksandra was 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in both segments, and overall. Although Natasha McKay won both segments, the fight for the remaining podium positions was very tight.

In the SP, Aleksandra scored 48.26, so not too dissimilar to what she achieved at Skate Southern. Everybody had one fall, except for Danielle Harrison who was in 4[SUP]th[/SUP] position. At the end of the SP, there was approximately 3 points between each of the skaters.

As for the FS, Aleksandra scored 89.39, which was her highest FS score since the Coupe de Nice in October 2016! This was only 0.32 lower than Harrison, who was 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] in the FS. Which is very encouraging when you consider that Alika had 2 falls while Danni was clean. ;)

Aleksandra's overall score was 137.65, which, like the FS score, was her highest since the 2016 Coupe de Nice. She was only 0.35 behind Karly Robertson, who finished in 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] position.

Here is what she said about her time at the Tayside Trophy, along with a photo of the podium:

The Dundee Club livestreamed the event on YouTube, but the archived streams then got zapped by the record companies. So, while we keep our fingers crossed that some videos appear, here is a clip that she posted on Instagram:

That's right, she didn't do the FS. Don't know the reason why she didn't, though. Maybe she was just happy enough to have proven a point to herself by winning the SP.

It's how she got on in the North East Opens that I am curious about. Because I have found the video of her SP, but am getting an error message whenever I click into any of her category's pages on the event's Entries / Results Page.

I really hope it isn't the case that they didn't bother scoring her because she was competing as a guest skater. Because, regardless of whether they are in a "real" competition or not, the skater needs the feedback. Especially when it is their first competition of the season.

Aleksandra finished 27th out of 37 in the SP, with a score of 43.95.

This is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Oh, Alex.

When I saw you were using "Rise Like A Phoenix", I thought "Oh, no. She is draw unfavourable comparisons to Anna Pogo's iconic EX".

OK, so using a cover was probably a good tactic to try to avoid that. But, that cover is awful!

I can understand why she chose that song, though. Given that she had all but retired a few years ago, and then came back to skating when she moved to England for University.

Pity about the fall at the start. But, the rest of it wasn't bad.

She looked angry with herself coming off the ice.

:ghug:

10th position with 19 to go. But, less than a point behind Weinzierl. And less than 10 points behind the current leader, Zingas.

CaroLiza_fan

The fall was on her second element, the double axel. But, a thing I hadn't spotted was that she singled out her loop jump before that. Hence, it was invalidated. So, the start of the programe was even more costly than I initially thought.

Since then, Antonina DUBININA (SRB) has slipped in between Nathalie and Aleksandra. So, Alika is actually only 0.14 points behind the girl in front of her.

Although the final position looks disappointing, Aleksandra is actually only 11.01 points behind 8th position. She is in a very close group where 17.5 points covers 27 skaters, from 8th position down to 34th position. And when you have groups as large and as close as this, there can be a lot of movement in all directions. So, if Aleksandra puts in a good FS, she could move considerably up the order.

Fingers crossed!

:cheer: WELL DONE ALEKSANDRA!!! :cheer:

The Ladies FS is due to start at 10:10:00 CEST (08:10:00 GMT / 09:10:00 BST / 11:10:00 EEST). So 3 hours from now.

Aleksandra will be the 11th skater to start. So, first to go in Group 3 (and first to go after the first resurfacing).

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 11:44:00 CEST (09:44:00 GMT / 10:44:00 BST / 12:44:00 EEST). So 5h 34m from now.

Aleksandra is due to start at 11:50:30 CEST (19:50:30 GMT / 10:50:30 BST / 12:50:30 EEST). So 5h 40m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Firstly, apologies that I didn't get this written sooner. I didn't want to write a report until I had seen the whole segment. And because it was a real marathon of a segment, it took a few goes to get it all watched.

But, better late than never!

Aleksandra finished 28th out of 36 in the FS, with a score of 81.38. This meant that she dropped to 28th place overall, with a score of 125.33.

Unfortunately, Aleksandra missed out on qualifying Lithuania for a Ladies slot at the Olympics. But, it is not entirely surprising. She was always going to be at a disadvantage because it is not that long since the rinks in the UK re-opened after being closed for well over a year.

For me, everything about the programme was beautiful. The music, the dress, the skating, everything!

A lot of the members in the competition thread were complaining about the cover of "Stand By Me" that Aleksandra was using. But, I don't think it was justifed. Put it like this - I've heard far worse covers of it over the years! Of course, I prefer Ben E. King's original, but Florence And The Machine's version is not far behind it.

And it is certainly better than the music that was playing during her highlights! ;)

To be honest, 28th place in the Free Skate doesn't tell the whole story. The skate was better than the position suggests. Aleksandra finished 0.73 points behind Sinem Kuyucu (TUR) in 27th, and 0.25 points ahead of Sofia Lexi Jacqueline Frank (PHI) in 29th place. But, they were part of a group where 10 points covered 18th position to 31st position. It was just a very close competition.

That is not to say that there were not issues.

Aleksandra had a fall on the Triple Toe early on in the programme. But, that was purely because she was too close to the boards. I am by no means an expert in these things, but being off the ice for so long is bound to affect your spatial awareness. But, with more time on the ice, this should come back.

By the time Aleksandra was doing her final two jumps (both Double Flips), you could see in her face that tiredness was setting in. She managed the first one alright, but she really struggled to land the second one. You were left in no doubt just how much the programme had taken out of her when she was near bent double coming off the ice, and when she was breathing heavily while sitting waiting for her scores.

It just shows the effects that being off the ice for so long can have. We know this girl has stamina. For goodness sake, when she was still only 16, Aleksandra did 2 full events in 2 different countries in the space of 8 days, with the FS for the EYOF in Austria on the Wednesday, and the SP for Europeans in Sweden on the Thursday. Not many skaters could do that. And although she is 6 ⅔ years older now, it is not gone. It just needs a bit of work.

I agree with what Niko Ulanovsky said in his summary. He said that he thinks this programme has a lot of potential, and that she'll work on it and come back stronger.

So, let's hope that she is able to do just that, and then claim a slot at Europeans.

:cheer: WELL DONE ALEKSANDRA!!! :cheer:

I was having my dinner at the time the Trophée Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur Ladies SP started, but I got in and got the computer all set up again in time for Aleksandra coming on at 13:20 BST.

However, when I got the stream on (just in the nick of time), it was Australian skater Romy GROGAN that was just starting. And now that the stream is on Vimeo rather than YouTube, you can't re-wind. So, I resigned myself to the fact that I had missed Alika.

I wasn't surprised when I couldn't find a video of her on YouTube this morning. But, when I went into the Trophée Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur SP Results, I couldn't find her there either. So, it would appear that Aleksandra withdrew before the segment started.

I hope she is alright.

I went to her Instagram to see if there was anything on there, and a few days ago she posted some photos of her walking along a beach in Lithuania, with the hashtag "holiday". So, maybe she is still at home. I don't know.

But, a thing I did see while I was there - Aleksandra has now completed her Undergraduate course at the University Of Northumbria At Newcastle. She now has a Bachelor Of Science in Sport, Exercise and Nutrition. But not only that, it was with First Class Honours! ;) (As if we expected anything less from her!)

Here is an album of photos from her graduation (a month ago):

And here is a separate photo of her sitting in her gown and mortarboard overlooking the Tyne Bridge:

I am so sorry. Due to spending an hour and a quarter setting up a new TV yesterday morning, I completely forgot to put up reminder posts for the Tayside Trophy Short Programmes in the Fan Fests.

Aleksandra finished 3rd out of 12 in the SP, with a score of 57.48.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

What can I say?! This is the best I have seen Aleksandra skate for years! I am totally biased, but in my eyes it was flawless!

This score is a new absolute PB for the SP. The only time she has scored anything near this for the SP was when she won the 2019 Kaunas Ice Cup.

I don't want to count my chickens before they're hatched, but Aleksandra has a shot at winning this. She is only 2.31 points behind the leader, her fellow Dundee skater Natasha McKay.

Aleksandra is currently sandwiched between two Bulgarian teenagers. Alexandra Feigin is 1.26 points ahead of her in 2nd, while Ivelina Baycheva is 3.00 points behind her in 4th.

Looking forward to the Free Skate.

:cheer: WELL DONE ALEKSANDRA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start at 16:25:00 GMT (18:25:00 EET). So 8 hours from now.

Aleksandra will be the 10th skater to start. So, fourth skater to go in Group 2 (and antepenultimate skater to go altogether).

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 17:09:00 GMT (19:09:00 EET). So 8h 44m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Aleksandra finished 20th out of 29 in the SP, with a score of 45.41.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Oh, poor Aleksandra. She goes into last place.

I didn't think it was all that bad. But, I'm not an expert.

She looks really disappointed.

And with that downbeat mood, I head over to Tallinn to watch another of my children.

CaroLiza_fan

On her first element, the Triple Loop, Aleksandra had an awful landing, and had to have a double hands down to avoid it turning into a fall. It didn't make any difference, as all the judges still gave her -5 for it. The landing of the next element, the Double Axel, was a lot better. It was only when I re-watched the programme that I noticed that the landing wasn't quite perfect. So, she got minuses for it too. After that, everything looked alright to me. To the extent that I can't even work out what the judges objected to in her final element, the Change Foot Combination Spin.

As soon as she finished, you could see Aleksandra was frustrated with her performance. Her head was straight into her hands, and then the hands went to the hips. It just shows how a skater knows what's gone wrong and how they've done. Because for me watching her, the only problem I had seen was that landing of the Triple Loop at the start.

She is currently 1.87 points behind 19th position, her Baltic neighbour Kristina SHKULETA-GROMOVA (EST), and 0.74 ahead of 21st position, Taylor MORRIS (ISR). There is potential to move up some places. Nathalie WEINZIERL (DEU) in 16th position is 5.49 points ahead of Aleksandra. The problem is, nearly everybody behind Aleksandra is close to her. The girl in penultimate position, Natalia LERKA (POL) is only 4.21 points behind Aleksandra. It could go either way.

So, she will have to put in a good FS to make sure she goes the right direction.

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start at 13:00:00 CET (12:00:00 GMT / 14:00:00 EET). So 6 hours from now.

Aleksandra will be the 10th skater to start. So, fifth skater to go in Group 2 (and penultimate skater to go before the first resurfacing).

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 13:41:30 CET (12:41:30 GMT / 14:41:30 EET). So 6h 41m from now.

Aleksandra is due to start at 14:16:00 CET (13:16:00 GMT / 15:16:00 EET). So 7h 16m from now.

Aleksandra finished 20th out of 29 in the FS, with a score of 89.82. This meant that she remained in 20th place overall, with a score of 135.23.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

:bang: :bang: :bang:

Aleksandra fell on the Triple Salchow early on, but after that it was looking so good in the middle of the programme.

But then she had some very costly mistakes in the second half. First, she didn't have the best of landings on her Triple Toe. The next element as supposed to be a Triple Toe in combination, but she fell on the first part. And because she had already done a Triple Toe on it's own, she got penalised for repeating it. And then she singles her Axel at the start of her final combination.

She was looking good again towards the end, though.

It's unfortunate how these things work out.

She goes into 3rd position both in the FS and overall.

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the protocols, the issues started even before the Salchow. On the previous element, the Triple Flip, she landed on the quarter, which produced minuses from the judges. And the same happened with the Triple Salchow that she did in combination with a Double Toe. This was the element after the individual Triple Salchow.

You know, maybe it is because I'm not a figure skater, but this is something that I have never understood. Why do the jump individually before you do it in combination? At least if you do the combination first and you fall on the initial jump, then that can be treated as the individual jump and you can try to attach the combo onto the second go at the initial jump. But, if you do the jump individually first, then that means you do not have this option, and leaves you no room for error.

With the Triple Salchow, it worked out doing them this way round. But, it didn't work out for the Triple Toe. And she lost a lot of points as a result.

As I mentioned, she singled out the Axel at the start of her final combination. Which meant that she was given 0 by all the judges.

Although she had issues with most of her jump elements, the spins all went well. So, perhaps she should concentrate on polishing up the jumps between now and Nationals (I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the results of the Lithuanian skaters taking part in the Kaunas Christmas Cup that is due to take place in the first week of December will be used to decide the Nationals results).

Aleksandra finished 3.46 points behind 19th position, Alina URUSHADZE (GEO), and 6.66 points ahead of 21st position, Yelizaveta BABENKO (UKR), in the Free Skate. Overall, Aleksandra finished in an Ukrainian sandwich, with Anastasia GOZHVA 4.30 points ahead of her in 19th, and 3.72 points ahead of Yelizaveta BABENKO in 21st.
