Sometimes in-place choreography is necessary to showcase the character of certain genres of music/dance; tap, hip-hop, latin, flamenco are examples. Virtue/Moir have opened their programs with some captivating in-place dance moves including in their 2011 Latin FD and their iconic 2017 Prince SD. As well, in-place choreography continues the program while giving the skaters a breathing point. When recalling Carolina Kostner's Bolero, I often remember her body rolling movement, which is well timed to the music and within the program, done after the final jump combo and gets the crowd going before performing her step sequence.

What are some memorable ones for you?

Yuzuru´s first seconds in Ballade... that head movement is everything (don´t know if I´m getting your question right)

Tatiana Navka- Roman Kostomarov Smooth criminal is actually the one that comes to my mind. One of my personal all time favorites in this matter.
Anjelika Krylova- Oleg Ovseannikov Malaguena: https://youtu.be/YXYpP5GGreE?t=73
Tatiana Navka- Roman Kostomarov Carmen: https://youtu.be/Pj8DVpDb_v0?t=41
Stephane Lambiel Carne Cruda: https://youtu.be/WWU83Ktuuxc?t=26

Thanks, Smooth Criminal has cool, inspired moves throughout.

Some additional Carmen inspired choreography, both creating great dramatic effect:

As a non-English speaker, I am not sure what exactly "in place" means, and wondering if I could say that twizzles in ShibShibs' "Fix You" FD were perfectly in place.

Ok, let me try to explain. What I was getting at are body movements/choreography that involve minimal/no travelling across the ice and/or no continuous rotations during execution. It doesn't necessarily mean that they can't move around, but the choreography is done almost on or on the spot.

Using Bourne and Kraatz as an example to illustrate the differences, they do the Irish stepdance travelling across the ice and also incorporate segments where they are just dancing in-place/on the spot:

Dancing while travelling across the ice: (0:29-0:53): https://youtu.be/pZxdCZUAPjo?t=29
They stop at 0:54 and perform the dance in-place/on the spot (0:55-1:00):https://youtu.be/pZxdCZUAPjo?t=54

Now my knowledge of Irish stepdance is quite limited but you can see the parallels their program tries to draw when you watch Riverdance done on the dance floor:

Dancing in-place/on the spot (3:32-3:50) - https://youtu.be/R9KkbU4yStM?t=212

Also, it doesn't only have to pertain to ice dance. In Takahashi's Blues for Klook FS, he stops and does some choreography in-place right before moving across the ice for the step sequence. It can also be a choreographed stop like Jeremy Abbott's that Ic3Rabbit mentioned.

Since twizzles travel across the ice and rotate continuously, they are not considered done in-place. However, the hip-hop movements (1:56-2:00) the Shibs perform in their 2017 SD are considered in-place. :)

Still get goosebumps every single time. He didn't do anything but breathing for nearly 15 seconds and created this incredible atmosphere. Complete silence in the crowd, just the piano music playing in the background. His body posture was beautiful.

Another in-place-choreo that I really appreciate: Javi's Malaguena

The opening of the choreo at 0:48
and that little breather in the middle at 1:48

I guess, this is something that only a real Spaniard can do like this. Epic :2thumbs:

When people think of Yulia they often think of the Schindler’s List pose or the scribbling of hearts on the ice but for me my favorite was all the kite flying gestures she makes all about in Megapolis. None more than this opening one but it appears throughout.

I love the backstory behind the kite :)
